that I really got into Starcraft 1 when it was in its prime. Instead, my game of choice was CounterStrike. I played that game from when I was in 7th grade (so around 2002) til about my senior year of high school.
Now, the game was fun, don't get me wrong. I enjoyed getting sick shots, doing 1v3s and coming out on top, and being an overall good teammate. However, the community was plain awful. There were not that many people who helped you, it was all a contest to see who had the biggest epeen or be the biggest asshole. The community was just hostile majority of the time and it just wasn't very welcoming.
Although, there were negatives; there were some positives that came with playing CS. I met some pretty cool people on my teams. Some of them I still talk to today. I really got into competitve play and esports by following my favorite teams and watching events such as CPL,DreamHack,WCG, and other online leagues.
So in a way, CS led me to Starcraft and TL. The TL community just has been very welcoming and just been super nice. I've been enjoying SC2 and been watching some SC1 because I find the game just really cool.
<3 TL. Never change. EVER!

Used to play on a server which had a site that tracked all your stats and stuff, was totally addicted to doing it. I thought the people on it were mostly really nice and stuff, but I may have been more naive since I was like 14 then lol.
Normal gameplay got boring after a year or so, decided to start killing people with the knife (couple gunshots into knife stab), that entertained me for a long time, plus it got people mad lol
But yea, I wish I followed the scene earlier, like in 2006 - the rise of oov/saviOr, then the fall, and the rise of Jaedong and subsquently Flash. I guess I could go back further and appreciate the BoxeR era as well.
I'm trying to make up for that now

were you on any notable teams

TL.net (and the StarCraft community in general) was not always this way, believe me. The easiest relic to find is this one, but that hardly paints a complete picture. Many of the "old school pros" were raging kids at one point or another, and SC had its fair share of hackers, abusers, and all. Anyway, just take TL for what it is today, and don't worry too much about the past.
Granted, SC was always superior to CS!

Oh yes. The CounterStrike community is maybe a bit too... aggressive or something. Everyone is trying to prove something to everyone else. Even the forums of many clans are very... interesting. Even though we say that all the new players stink up TeamLiquid, it's actually nothing compared to some of the stuff that some clans have. Sure some of the are nice, but it's still a competition to see who's better, or who can ban more, or what not.
I would probably still be in CounterStrike if people didn't ban me for hacking, oh look, my CounterStrike roots are showing. But honestly, they just didn't like people killing them. I'm glad I've been part of all these communities because it's such a big difference between TeamLiquid and them. And I'm happy to have been banned, else I'd probably still be there.
CounterStrike still gave me reflexes though, and got me through 3 years, so I still love it.

TL.net is a very unique community. I've been part of quite a few gaming communities, and TL.net will always be something special to me. You've definitely come to the right place. While it has its share of drama, the people here are simply at a higher level. Welcome to the site, i'm sure you'll enjoy your stay here

Nah, I'm pretty much Cal-O for life.

I wouldn't say it was a waste. In the grand scheme of things I would say CS is not a bad game to have followed. Sure the community may have been worse, but it was a great competitive game.
For me it was like SC>CS>War3>Dota

As a fellow competitive fps player I would say cs wasn't really a waste for you to play everyone did play once in there life so theres no big deal about that. CS is prettty much dead in the US as for looking for a team its either you have friends/connections to play for a team but there is one thing i always do if a international event were to happen is watch cs professional matches still fun .

yeah i think its all about the nature of the game
starcraft is a strategy game that takes focus and determination, in contrast to the ezpz aim-and-click style of FPS that tends to lure or agitate more immature or rash behavior
you would find better people in the SC community than in CS

I wish i was born about 4-5 years earlier so i couldve gotten into competitive SC1. i was just a little too young when the original came out in 98(7 yrs old lol) to have really understood the awesomeness that is competitive RTS play.
hopefully i can do something like it with sc2 though :D

the starcraft community is awesome especially on TL.
There's dozens of streams to watch at all times, tournaments happening pretty much daily, amazing personalities like day9, djwheat. amazingly unique players from all parts of the world with all kinds of different playstyles. huge events to go to in person. LAN events all over, tons of great people, I've met literally hundreds of TLers now at various events over the past few years and nearly all of them have been amazing people. I've made tons of friends through TL that I am now good friends with IRL too.

I wouldn't say it was a waste. It did lead me to this community and esports. Watching some some old SC games I just wished that I could have played with everybody.
So I'm here now for what its worth.

Funny story...
But it was very on and off.

Sometimes I wish I could go back to 5 years ago, except with the same brain and all. Make better choices, see the future etc.
EDIT : 5 years ago because that's when I got into SCBW :/ I played for about 2 years not knowing shet. Blaming others for my losses at BGH and FMP. Then trolling UMS game players. I feel that it was 2 years wasted, although it was sort of fun and time you had wasting isn't wasted time. But I'd be so much better!

Hmm... You should see the Chill vs Combat-ex thread. But on overall, TL is a great place
