Tired of seeing so much Brostep on TL. I'm trying not to flame but there's so much more to Dubstep. Here's a list of really, really good labels that don't drown you in midrange LFOs. It's all about basswheight man.
These are the biggest labels in the non Brostep scene
DMZ (Dubstep in it's original meaning)
Deep Medi Musik (just huge)
Hotflush Recordings (Dubstep/Techno merge)
Hyperdub (Burial ofc. but also other cool creative stuff)
Swamp 81 (Kryptic Minds are just huge)
Tempa (One of the oldest labels and lot's of different stuff)
Tectonic (Also pretty old and good back catalogue
Hessle Audio (Quite percussive Dubstep)
Punch Drunk (very percussive Dubstep)
Planet Mu (Vex'd ofcourse and there's also other good Dubstep but Planet Mu also has a lot of other genres)
Skull Disco (Not active anymore but Shackleton just has a very huge and unique Style)

The origin of the term is from Dubstepforum.com as far as I know. It's used all the time in the Dubstep scene know. It describes the really "filthy" stuff that drowns you in annyoing LFO sequences.

ohhhh hahahaha well ... i thnik both 'real' dubstep and 'brostep' are pretty good. although too much LFO sequences can get a bit too much lol
much prefer bro step haha...much more interesting and epic, most the other stuff (excluding DMZ and a few others) is far too minimalist for me!!! If I want to hear 'grooves' I'll listen to some proper grooves- James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder...if I want to hear pure filth I go to dubstep.

I don't necessarily hate LFO wobbles but theyre often getting way overdone these days. Much like supersaws in Trance it's getting really obnoxious and boring.
Good post, unfortunately most Americans exposure to dubstep is to the completely shit wobble tunes. Guess what, you can have heavy bass tracks WITHOUT completely cheesy midrange wobbles. Joker for example, his livesets are banging, and just good music in general. I refuse to use the term 'brostep' because its a UK genre and we don't even use the term bro's so why this has come to be used to don't know.
The state of dubstep is so sad, just look at beatport top 100 for dubstep. It's all carbon copies of shit like Sweet Shop. It's a one time gimmick track we don't need one million copies of it. Fuck all of that terrible music lacking any emotion or any feeling at all, it's all just a poor emulation of tracks previously made. It's not 'filthy' it's shite, its more cheesy than fucking eurodance at this point, it's almost like a parody of itself. There's proper dark heavy dubstep out there without the wobbles which would be worthy of the term, not some Skrillex type bullshit.
The reason for this is partially because people are actually listening to music which is designed for the BASS, on youtube. Don't listen to music on youtube!! just sample a track then get a real copy ffs. No wonder midrange shit is so popular, how can you appreciate a proper dubstep track from youtube when you can't even hear the sub-bass?

If you look beyond Brostep I think Dubstep is the best looking genre in EDM right now. Just so much people pushing new sounds and new styles.
