I was having a discussion with a few friends about a variety of games and was curious if you guys could better inform me on this topic.
In most Call of Duty/Battlefield type games what reveals your position on the minimap? Specifically I'm curious about:
1) Throwing grenades 2) Sprinting 3) Running 4) Misc actions like call in air strikes, uav use, etc.
I was always under the impression that only firing guns (both as infantry and vehicles) put you on the radar but my friends insist that is not the case. I haven't played many newer FPSs so I'm curious how it actually works these days. Thanks!

In CoD, it's only shooting that reveals your position.
Unless someone has a UAV up.

In the CoD series it's only shooting. Not 100% on others.

Well I can tell you that in Call of Duty the only thing that reveals you on the map (if the other team doesn't have a UAV up) is an unsuppressed weapon. Throwing grenades, calling kill streaks, knifing, or using silent weapons like a Crossbow will not reveal you on the map.
Of course this is only if you're talking about literal "red dot on the map" type reveal. If you're good at sound whoring, almost anything will give away the enemies position. You can hear pins pull on grenades, calling in kill streaks makes an audible sound, and even suppressed weapons are quite loud and you can pin point their location if you have a good headset or something.

CoD: shooting unsilenced weapons or getting scanned by a UAV.
BC2: getting spotted by the enemy team (someone miouses over you and hits Q)
BF2: commander or player broadcasting your position to enemy team
They also implemented something like this in CS Source at some point but i'm not familar with it. :/

I believe in CSS you or one of your team member have to see an enemy to have it on the minimap.

CS 1.6 radar shows only teammembers, hostages and C4-bomb (position if you are terrorist and if it is placed as CTs)

Also note that spotting in BC2 not only makes you show up on the minimap, but it puts a marker on you which people can see through walls etc.
