Im having a terrible time with my laptop. I lent my Macbook Pro with Leopard to my sister a few weeks ago and recently picked it up. Upon receiving the computer from her i came across a problem. At first on start-up, it took a few moments longer than usual to load to the desktop. Only a few days later i noted that it took a few minutes to reach the desktop and load the icons etc. One month later and now it barely turns on at all. Today, it took 3 hrs to get to the log in screen! by the fourth hour mark my desktop picture finally loaded but there were no icons and the mouse was still busy (rolling ball in place of the cursor). The mouse movement is still enabled without lag or distortion yet typing and clicking actions take abnormal extended amounts of time.
Is this a motherboard issue? Ram issue? Hard drive failure? I've searched plenty of forums and couldnt come up with anything that relates to this problem. Is there anyone on tl.net that is mac savy!? I would appreciate this so much as this is the last of my possessions from school that I'd very much like to keep!
thanks in advance!

Well I guess you could ask your sister what exactly did she do, or you can keep googling for it.
|
She says she didnt do anything. She said that she saw the elapse time it took to start the computer and run processes take longer and longer but she never told me this until i questioned her about it. i'd never get the truth even if there was truth to be had.

Maybe she dropped it or spilled water or something over it? I have used a couple of macs and never encountered this problem sorry.
Occasionally they did take a shitload of time to shut down (lots of hours), like with my windows comps, but they never had issues like yours.

did you scan for viruses?

If there's an Apple Store anywhere near you, sign up for a Genius Bar appointment and just take that shit in. They'll figure out what's wrong and repair it, and I guarantee that it will be less painful than trying to diagnose the problem yourself.
The only thing I might try first is (backing up and then) wiping the HD and reinstalling the OS from disk. That will take less time than one trip to the login screen, and there's a small chance this is a software problem.

Well i tried reinstalling the OS but it just spits the disc right out after a few minutes of reading it.

My money is definitely on a failing hard drive. As others have said definitely take it to an Apple store and have them look at it.

@ Deux.
I have limited the options down to the HD failing. I've price the model etc and its pretty cheap. Momentus 160 GB 7200 RPM. Hopefully i wont be dumping money for no reason. If thats not the problem then i will have no choice but to go to Apple and get a diagnostic test + repairs.

Did you get the AppleCare plan? You can just send that in and get it squared away no question if you do. But I really recommend you setting up a Genius appointment just to get a first opinion from them on what may be going on.

I'd just take it into an Apple store. Assuming it was your sister's fault, then I'd say something was spilled on, dropped, and cracked RAM? I have no idea, haha. But take it in, check for hardware issues. If there are no hardware issues, then just reinstall the operating system (Maybe try to backup if you can).

my warranty is up.. it ended a few months ago unfortunately.. its kinda why im forced to do this sort of trial and error research and problem solving.

Still, though, take it in to the Genius Bar. They'll at least diagnose the issue for you for free and then quote you a repair price, which you can take or leave to do more research. No harm in going to the people who know what they're doing.

thanks everyone for your responses!
