Anyway yesterday I downloaded ICCup, I don’t really know what prompted me but I’m glad I did. I’m just gonna talk briefly about my ICCup experience. I have NO idea how ICCup works so I just went in and joined a game. I’ll pause briefly now to remind everyone of my BW experience, I got it about a year ago at the urging of my friends, I pretty quickly got better than them simply by massing carriers (a good skill toi have) after playing sc2 beta I realized that massing units was not a really good strategy so I became even more deadly against my friends because I would beat them with real strategy.
Fast forward to last night and my first ICCup game. I was totally out classed, every single aspect of the game I was beaten handily. But you know what? I LOVED every single second of it, the game lasted about 30 minutes, I got up to three bases, multiple battles occurred (as opposed to sc2 where you have one big battle and it’s over). Since my computer could handle the graphics I was able to micro just a little bit, I made sure not to trap my zealots behind my dragoons, I found my opponents army and tried to do a pincer attack (which failed). I killed an expansion (he killed multiple expansions). He reaver dropped me several times, but you know what, even as my probes were dying all I could think was “man this is FANTASTIC”. After the game I opened up the replay analyzer, man oh man I was in heaven. The sheer amount of information was amazing. Unlike sc2 replays, I could clearly see how and why my opponent had beaten me. I spent thirty or forty minutes pouring over every single stat. Watching the replay and looking at the analysis I realized something quite amazing, if I played like this in sc2 I’d be in gold easy, the skill level difference is astounding, my opponent averaged 117 VAPM, he’d probably be in platinum if he played sc2. Speaking of apm, mine almost doubled from sc2; I went from thirty ish to almost sixty. To sum up my ICCup experience I now understand why people hold BW in such high regard, overnight BW went from an outstanding game to a form of art.
Now for some random bloggy stuff. I played portal for the first time at a friend’s house, it’s actually I really good game. Normally I suck at puzzle games but portal kept me entertained for a while. Playing portal reminded me of this funny video, if you're at work I'd put some headphones in before watching as the language might get rough depending on your boss
