I woke up today at six thirty AM. Woke up to get the bus and attend my nine o'clock class. Got here and found nothing but empty seats. Of course, I wasnt about to let a few empty seats make an absurd out of the accomplishment of getting up that early and running to get the bus, so I proceded to scout the whole god damn faculty to find where my class had gone. Ok.. maybe that is an exageration and I only stooped into a class or two before getting distracted by a Japanese class where everybody was singing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'...STILL.. I could've bailed on the whole ordeal upon arriving at an empty classroom.
Well. Nevermind. Why am I even talking about this as if it had sonme relevance with Iccup? Well, because all these preceded the fact that to make up for waking up early I came to the computer lab to download every single album i wanted to download in the past months... twice. This attempt allowed me to steal the bandwith from the school. And then I ran out of bandwith and my plan was fucked.
So all I was left was teamliquid, and because now everyone is excited with SC2, the BW section is almost as empty as the class I had to attend. IN FACT, Milkis' posts are the exact equivalent to that kid i've never spoken to in class that got there, at about the same time I did, to meet the grim fate that we got up early for about nothing.
For some reason I checked iccup. I've lost 8 of my last ten matches. EIGHT OF THE LAST TEN. And there wasnt a winning streak before that. Those eight games lost were rpeceded by eight more games lost. God damnit. I resetted my stats and went on the longest loosing streak ever. I mean, i barely hold to a low D rank, but this time i plunged into the realm where players turtle in one base for the whole game and think scouts are a powerful unit in the game. GOD DAMNIT.
I knew, i mean, I hoped that there was some unearthly reason for this. "I aint this bad" I thought. And lo and behold, 80% of the people i've played have max ranks between a high D+ and a low B-. Let me clear this up. I still suck. They could have been D players and i would have lost a lot of those games. But the thing is.. i lost horribly. You know, those games you loose and you feel like you are a complete, hopless dumbass? I think I now know what the entire KT lineup feels all the time in their practice hours.
And I feel this is not only something to rant about. I feel that this is actually a situation that cocners the rest of the BW community. The difficulty of finding leveled players to play with makes the learning process very difficult. I've seem some SC2 players being attracted to BW, wanting to play ICCUP and I can only imagine what they feel when they get demolished by smurfs and D players that seem to been blessed by the holy trinity.
I think that it is a necessity for the community, if its intention is to keep growing, to not die, now that we face all this SC2 hype (which i have no problem with), to create spaces where players who are starting, who are learning, can meet people of their skill, so the game doesnt feel like a burden.
Just thought i'd throw it out there, even when I know this ahs been noticed before, maybe the remaining BW community in TL can come up with something.
EDIT: Because people seem to think im actually really angry I'll clarify that this was all written half jokingly. Whilst I do believe that ICCUP level has risen and it is hard for people who havn't been duking it out to learn a lot from they're games I know that you can learn a lot from watching replays against very good opponents and that rage isnt likely to get you very far.
I think i'd be nice if there was a spot or newbies to hang out and practice with each other once in a while before trying to beat a Korean in a straight up one on one.

There is already such a place

you just have to practice alot dude. iccup is freaking brutal, bnet has nothing on it.
you just have to keep losing till it clicks. there's no easy way out. problem for you is that the ladder is super saturated with better players, but its not unwinnable. its just like the uh
hyperbolic time chamber

just vet everyone you play till you get a non smurf. When i go on big losing streaks i'll just start banning every korean and searching for every non-korean who joins till i get a legit D+ (they're hard to find)

iccup is just a difficult place to play. dont be so hard on yourself. everyone loses games

I think that this is really well written, but people must go on B.Net and other places for the learning curve. You cannot start at the top which is essentially iccup. My highest rank ever on the old pgtour (the equivalent of iccup before) is B-. I lost my rank as soon as I practiced less than 2-3 hours a day, which is a lot for me. In addition, people have to read strategy guides and watch replays of people who know what they are doing. Otherwise, they will always be desperate and lost when playing broodwar against decent opposition.

you could join our clan )FRANZ(. we're noobs (D to C- level) and most of us are inactive, but if you're looking for some games against players that aren't insanely skilled, you're welcome.

My computer broke down a couple of weeks ago so i decided to play some BW again which i hadnt done since the sc2 beta phase 1 and i feel like the level is pretty similar to what it was before sc2.
Ofc there's always korean smurf's who are way too good for their current rank but overall i felt like the D,C,B and A- players were the same skill as before

Playing against people who are better than you is the best way to improve. Watch your replays after each game and analyze your mistakes/opponent's strengths. That way you lose fewer games (time-wise) and each game is worth more. GL.

what i want to know is what happened to your class?

My college internet is like that all the time.
15 mins to load a 5 minute youtube video. My down seed is .4mb/s or so the internet speed test says but it took 3/4 of an hour and two attempts to download firefox. I wish I could play bw or sc2. So jealous... :/

Oh gosh, I'm actually not the only one. Ok, that sounds way more dramatic than intended, but it is kind of a revelation to me . I so know these losing streaks, basically for every 2 games I win, you can count on me losing 8-10 games in a row beforehand. Worst of all: People I play are either complete noobs (I played a Zerg yesterday that actually imitated an AI BO), or roll me utterly. There doesn't seem to be many players near my skill level (which is rather low). May be we can play a game or two if you like. Though timezones could be a real pain here. I mostly play at ~9-11 AM CET... I could also look at the rep afterwards. I feel these "after game discussions" help a lot in understanding the game. Edit: Void[soul] is the ID btw...

ICCup is definitely different now, but overall the rank issues aren't so bad once you get past D level. At D+ level I found my opponents to be what I expected, but at D level they're like, totally terrible or really gosu haha< I agree however that it'd be nice for the community to have a meeting area for people from E to C- rank. Maybe could start a channel for TL users like OP TL or something and then attract more users we play with. I'm always telling my friends not to get discouraged about losing, but yeah, iccup is not for the soft.

hyperbolic time chamber This is how I went from Keyboard rank to Olympic+ in 8 weeks. But it was only actually 3.5 hours because of the hyperbolic chamber.

Evil_Monkey_ - how is this well written? It's horrible... difficult to read and way too verbose. I appreciate the attempts to be interesting/funny, but this is basically just outlining night terrors day and frustration with not being better at BW. I understand how ICCup is frustrating for someone who`s not as good as most of the people they play... losing sucks, but it is actually a great place to learn. It gives you valuable replays like everyone has pointed out and gives you a feel for competitive play. It`s way better than B.Net for that (where it`s hard to even find games that aren`t Fastest Possible). If you want to learn to play SC or BW (I don`t know why anyone would start at this point), and have a shot at winning some games, I think SC2 would be a good place to start. You can`t expect to find a lot of beginners playing a game that is almost 15 years old.

@Donk)sz( The fact that you're a slow/bad reader or whatever other reason you have, doesn't mean something is difficult or too verbose. It was both interesting and funny, and yes, as a blog it can also be a place for him to vent his frustration. Also, your SC2 point makes no sense at all, because most people looking to pick up BW at the moment are from SC2 and want to try the game it was based off of. They'll be discouraged by the gauntlet that is ICCup and go back to playing the silly divisions and xbox achievements that is SC2.
@metal[x] Thanks for the info! :D I'll check into the channel more often! I really think it should be advertised more though, if no one is in there, I know enough TL people looking for fellows on ICCup.
