wait wait wait wat?
i just read in a german forum that the installer instantly does a ~1gb copy into your temp folder on c: which is the root of the problem.
i checked my c: -> ~700mb free. so i deleted some minor stuff to get to 1,5gb (the max i could free up without deleting important stuff ) and the installer starts fine! autostart worked normally ,i could select the installfolder and its installing right now! 10% so far. will update once its done.
test it guys!

Well this fucks me over again completely. My C: is only 9,76 GB and currently at 303MB available space, with everything completely clean and wiped. I have no idea what I would be able to uninstall to free up 700MB. I run Windows XP btw, does anybody know of any 700 MB in a near-windows only partition that could be freed up?

oh damn... feel sorry for you bro.
you could try to find some atm unused stuff and just temporarily put it on another disk, do the install and put em back where they were. whats not used wont fuck up your os till you restart/the install is finished i guess.
but cant tell you which files are risky and which are fine to do that with :/
/edit it worked fine. im now patching the game. so thats the fix for the problem. 3-4 hours of my life/gametime wasted but its woooorrrrrks
if the OP or a mod reads this it might be good to put the solution in the opening post.
short recap:
root of the problem: autoplay/the installer instantly tries to put ~1-1,5 gb of data into your temp folder on c:. if that is not available it will give a error and do nothing at all. no matter the space on your other drives.
solution: free up 1,5gb on your c: . you dont need space for the whole game just enough so the stupid installer can secretly copy the files there. should work fine then.

Get the digital download and install. If the dl is slow, just go into settings and turn off peer-to-peer and it will download directly from blizzards server..

Does anybody know if I can cut my "Documents and Settings" folder from C:, and then put it back in after I've installed? Will this fuck anything up?

I think you should be able to change where the temp folder is located. I think in the system properties there is a button called environment variables where you can change TMP and TEMP. But I think you should google that first.

I can't believe blizzard did something like this though, it's one of the biggest fuckups I've ever seen. I even emailed them about this, because it just doesn't make any sense.
I haven't picked up my disc yet, how does it install now? Does it not install from the CD?

I googled and found this:

I did this, while also changing the top two TEMP folders and it works! Thank you so much.

I'd just like to say thank you to MasterOfChaos for providing a solution to this rather vexing problem.
