Give indirect freekicks for some handballs and penalties for the deliberate ones/ones that stop a goal. @Harris as well hey how come you guys are getting props I’ve suggested this on two separate occasions here :p I kid Offside is a factual ruling, but all it is factually judging is who is offside. Whereas the rule is meant to prevent attackers gaining an unfair advantage, which it really isn’t adjudicating on in its current form.

And also very tricky to interpret for any ref. Which is why I prefer the current way to handle it. I get that what most football fans really want is that everything can be argued about so they can always feel disadvantaged by the referee. I personally prefer this very clean ruleset. I mean it IS preventing attackers from gaining an unfair advantage. It's just not the case in every single instance. But that really is not a problem since everyone knows what to avoid doing.

Would love to see how that match will differ from their first encounter, but at the same time it just feels wrong that they meet again 2 games later. But maybe Turkey just gets in the way of this happening

But that really is not a problem since everyone knows what to avoid doing. In general I find this beyond tedious to be fair. But with this tournament I think it’s largely a lot of neutrals going ‘ok that’s correct by the law, the law just doesn’t feel right’. As opposed to ‘wah this call went against my team’. I won’t reveal my full overhaul as my brother said it was ‘probably the stupidest thing you’ve ever said’ when I first showcased it, and there’s stiff competition there believe me. The offside tech is great, I just think you need a wee tweak of the rules and all is good in that hood. I’d consider removing the upper body from consideration, unless any of the upper body actually plays the ball in a sequence of play. It’s your lower body that propels you, ergo it’s the lower body that gives you the advantage in stealing ahead of a defender so I’d focus on that. Sticking my head or a shoulder out doesn’t give me a momentum advantage in a play, but if I use either of them in a play I’m getting an advantage. Or alternatively, just make the threshold slightly bigger. Players can’t realistically triangulate where they are, the defensive line at the exact moment a ball is played if the margins come down to a few cms. Linesman can’t either. Which I think is vaguely the Wenger proposal and I quite like elements of it. Aside from the ambiguity of ‘interfering with play’ to be fair I don’t mind offside toooo much, I just think it needs aligned a bit more with what humans can parse and the actual reason the law exists. But it’s minor tweaks really, the tech works very well. I’d also propose that if you’re offside in the box, and a ball is subsequently played in the box, a goal is offside. I don’t see how you cannot be interfering with play if by virtue of your presence you’re giving defenders decisions to make. Handball is the real mess for me really, offside is not too bad but I have my issues with it.

But the pageantry, fans travelling in droves and setting the atmosphere really do add to a tournament, even if games aren’t amazing at times. You see why having a tournament in a big football nation, surrounded by other big football nations who are a drive or a cheap flight away brings to the table, and fans can relax and enjoy themselves to their heart’s content. Luckily we’re not having a World Cup in somewhere like Saudi Arabia down the line where none of those are true… As for tonight’s match I mean Austria have been the better side but they’re not creating many clear chances either. Now they’ve conceded that second goal I struggle to see them pulling this back
