So, has anyone managaed to get Starcraft to run portably? That is, run off of a Flash drive so when I plug it into a computer without Starcraft installed, it recognizes SC as an installed program and runs off of a flash drive.
I'm just wondering if anyone has tried to do this? And succeeded? I'm thinking that I'm going to have to buy at least a 2 gb drive, possibly a U3 one because it has a bit of firmware that makes it recognized as a CD drive and it autoplays.
Thanks in Advance.

I can run it off my iPod fine. I don't know about a flash drive. I think with a flash drive you have to tell the registry where it is or something. Someone will link you to the old guide soon enough.

Yeah, a bit out of date, but that's how you do it. Just now you don't have to worry about all the no CD crap.
There are two ways to use SoS, first is to play directly from the stick (loading time can increase a bit on older sticks, but still playable), and the other way is to copy the Starcraft folder from the stick back on the disk. Either way, one thing must be done before hitting bwload112b.exe (no, not plugging the stick in, wiseguy), you must merge the screg.reg file with registry information to the computer used. Do this by double clicking screg.reg (or whichever name you used in step 2.) and when asked "Are you sure?", hit yes.

My friend does this all the time, so it's definitely possible.

We've played at school on SCLoader, but I'm not sure if that works online. It still works for LANs, though.

u can just copy the folder and it will work.
like 150 megs.

If you just install it directly on the USB, then carry the install.exe from the CD to the USB it will work. Just have to rename Install.exe to BroodWar.mpq

Umk thanks. I think I have enough material to make it work. Thanks for linking the guide PsycHOTemplar.

yeah it's our way of getting our dosage of SC at school =P. scloader ftw.

Yea, its easy. Just copy the folder contents like haji said, ~150 MB. Then, instead of using the 500MB install.exe, google "scloader2a", its a 72 kB program that you put in the sc directory and it runs sc.
Then, if you need to download a patch from bnet, you have to modifiy the registry to tell bnet where the install path is. So the scloader2a and registry file are all you need.
