CPU overheating problems. Doesn't make any sense

mudkipkilla 31 Posts June 18 2015 00:18 GMT #1 I have an FX 8320 paired with an ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0. In the BIOS all settings are at stock except for VRM phasing which is on full/extreme, multiplier, which is 21.5, and CPU cooler, which is set to max out at CPU 62C. This puts me at 4.1GHz and stock volts. I have not crashed in any game I have run for an extended duration of time including GTA V, SCII, CS:GO, or DOTA. However, when I run P95, it only takes several minutes to reach 87C at which point it will crash. This is the interesting part. I have Two 120MM intake fans on the top, 2 120MM intake fans on the top, and a single 120MM exhaust fan on the rear. On the CPU itself, I have a Push-Pull config., both 120MM fans mounted on a CM 612 Hyper. To put that into comparison to a more common cooler, its about 2C cooler than the H60 when compared to a single fan 612. When I touch the HS during P95, it is slightly warm, even when at about 80C. Now, this points to improper mounting as the cause. However, I have removed the HS and re-spread paste multiple times, and tightened down the HS to various degrees of tightness. None of the solutions have worked. Does anyone have any questions or solutions?

Cyro United Kingdom20270 Posts June 18 2015 00:50 GMT #2 Maybe you need a better heatsink?. A h60 isn't good just because it's liquid, it's actually a pretty awful cooler. Your case fans won't really impact the CPU temperature in that way. What they -will- do is prevent the air that's being blown into your CPU heatsink from heating up that much, but that means temperatures will level off more and at a lower point after a long time period of load (like 15 mins+, especially with a graphics card running too) and will have negligable effect on the temperatures after only a minute or two at load. That's down to the CPU cooler itself - mounting, contact, performance etc. The FX 8-threaded CPU's are not so easy to cool. What voltage are you using as "stock volts", if you're not setting anything manually then what is automatically being used? It can vary quite a lot between the sku's by default and it's better to manually tweak it My CPU has like half of the power draw of FX so the heatsink doesn't even get warm, but temperatures will still jump up by like 40c if i put the stock cooler on. Can't comment about how hot the heatpipes get because i don't generally stick my fingers on them while the heatsink is loaded I would suggest looking over mounting, paste etc but seems like you already at least tried there. Maybe you have another issue (using the wrong amount of paste in every mounting, perhaps the heatsink itself has a convex or concave base, the IHS of the CPU might not be flat etc) - i've seen a lot of weird issues in the last few years, even one guy who got 10-15c better temperatures by turning his case on its side to that the air heatsink stood straight up because of a defect in that particular heatsink (not the model, just the one he got was messed up somehow) What is your room temperature? That's important. I have ~17c room temperature, if yours was ~27c then you'd expect CPU to be 10c hotter at all times (even a slight bit more than that because increasing temperature slightly increases power usage too)

LaNague Germany9118 Posts June 18 2015 01:04 GMT #3 doesnt p95 use avx instructions? At least on my intel CPU they override all my bios settings and overvoltage the CPU beyond reason, never understood what the point is.

There were stain marks near the holes where the legs fit through to attach to the backplate and around the cpu area in general. I had to relocate about 600 miles by car for my job recently. Maybe the heatpipes were compromised?

mudkipkilla 31 Posts June 28 2015 23:02 GMT #7 I ordered a HSF a week ago that was stolen from my front door (612 hyper ver 2.0) to replace it. Unfortunately I've been working 80 hrs/week mon-sat and I dont trust the local usps to take the proper provisions and care. However, just today, I drove 45 miles to Santa Fe to get witcher 3 at bestbuy (giftcard). They didn't have witcher 3 but they did have a corsair h100i GTX surprisingly. its installed and I'm uploading pictures of the MB after the old HSF was taken off (I cleaned off the streaks from the bottom mounting holes, but the ones on top are clearly visible; i did some research and it could be a glycol/water solution and the streaks make me slightly nervous about making electrical contacts. however, was working fine, so it should hold. CPU idling at 22C stock. Hopefully I'll get it to 5GHz. The pics with the old HSF have 500ml (17 fl. oz.) for compare. Considering the 6 heatpipe config. and the massive overall volume of the rad with a push/pull config I'm fairly certain the heatpipes leaked. Also, previously I was running the cpu in 6 core mode @ 4.5ghz (was using an underspecced MB so worried about VRM blowout) and it struggled to get above 50C. VID is 1.4125. Hopefully the problem is solved.
