http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/general/129529-surprisingly-good-films-hidden-gems But as for movies that get underrated (in the sense of people who have seen them don't praise them enough), I might say: attack the block (2011) death to smoochy (2004) [i probably saw it around that time, and from what I remember I liked it. people hate it though] i'm a cyborg, but that's ok (2006) [the few people that see it generally saw "huh, weird but alright", whereas I really like it] los cronocrimenes (timecrimes) (2007) our idiot brother (2011) quick change (1990) [no one remembers this one ever, I think it's a strong Bill Murray film] unbreakable (2000) [people forget this one, I really like it] x2 (2003) [a lot of people on the internet really dislike it. Saw it as a kid in 2003 though so maybe I overrate it, but I feel internet posters really shit on it for no reason). now most of those are in the range of "people give it <= 6/10 but it should be 7.5 or 8/10, really solid" Contagion (2011) is one of my favourite movies of all time and people rarely reference it. If there was one movie I think people just don't know about or try to watch it as some big "thriller" movie, it's that one. Really top tier 10/10 and not just dramatic bs. There are a lot more films that deserve to be seen by more people, i think a quick sampling might be (really skimming through an old post of mine on another forum + a couple of my top rated movies ghost dog: the way of the samurai (1999) pleasantville (1998) ink (2009) romantics anonymous (les émotifs anonymes) (2010) breach (2007) thank you for smoking (2005) And tangled (2010) is way better than frozen (2013) :p

My favourite werewolf movie, I often prefer costumes/makeup to CGI when it comes to creatures. Some people seem to think it's utter shit but I enjoyed it.

I'll suggest a well-known movie among spaghetti western amateurs, much less so among others who think the genre is made up only by Sergio Leone's filmography (not that Leone is not a great director) : The Great Silence. Curious context, great acting, and an ending that left me with my mouth open. Klaus Kinski and Jean-Louis Trintignant should be enough to make some people curious...

Arlington Road The former is one of Kevin Spacey's mastermind movie, which alot of people just haven't seen, or have forgotten completely. It is such a mind breaking movie! The latter is just one of the all time favorites from when I was younger, this doesn't score high enough IMO

Introduced me to Jim Jarmusch, never regretted it either. X2 is the best X-Men movie before First Class, free.

The perks of being a wallflower. These are not really underrated, just not that well known. Oh and 50:50 and Silver linings playbook are easily damn near the only romantic "comedys" i like and would even watch whiteout a girl.

Seems like this one polarized a lot of audiences, but Johnny Depp's performance was outstanding as well as the directing style (deliberately and hilariously incoherent). A lot of people complained that the movie was too meandering, but I think that was the point -- it was trying to capture what happened to the hippie generation era once the flower power wore off and all that remained were drugged-up outsiders.

The Prestige The description sounds pretty lame at first but it is a pretty good movie with an interesting plot. Definitely worth watching once

Definitely worth watching once It's imo Nolan best movie, but calling it underrated is a very far stretch. I'm always dubious about calling an american 40 000 000 $ budget movie underrated, even if I'm among the rare people who defend John Carter :p Also Fear and loathing in Vegas is underrated in a pretty strange universe, I mean, it's very well-known, quite recent, hasvery well-known actors... (and is very average I think, but that's beside the point).

As such, I just have to mention the movie I finished 1 hour ago, because it is the first time in forever where I literally found myself thinking "wow, this might just be the best movie I have ever watched." It's not really underrated though, because I've yet to meet anyone who watched it and didn't absolutely love it, but it seems to have slipped quite a lot of people's radar.
