Two days ago I had managed to come across Sc2 on a shelf in a local Gamestop which I purchased along with the RPG DS game Dragon Quest 4 with my special 50 dollar gift card given to me by someone.
There were forces playing at hand here that made me conflicted over buying Sc2 though. I already had the starter edition so I knew how well my computer could handle Sc2, which it couldn't, at all. On the lowest settings my computer video card would struggle to create the animations of workers mining at a meager 15 frames per second. Then when the game actually started to go past the 5 minute worker it was like looking at a slideshow. Hotkeying and shift clicks were alone enough to occupy 90 of my apm making sure I didn't mix up my units and buildings into one group.
On the other hand if I had sc2 it'd look amazing on my shelf right next to my copy of Sc1. I'd also get the chance to play Protoss and Zerg and I'd get to play on ladder. It was a difficult choice, but I finally decided to purchase sc2 which was a whopping 40 dollars instead of buying Sonic Colors for a 17 dollar bargain and more of the latest and greatest games for the Wii.
I figured out how to install it after 3 hours of tinkering around trying to get back my bnet account. When I played the game once again the reality had dawned on me how slow my computer could run Sc2. Had my countless hours of watching Day9, Husky, and livestreams become fruitless?
In my 5 placement matches I won all of them except 1 using a well hated and classic build that has existed since Sc1 was first released-the 6 pool. I crushed my enemies who went 2 refiners before supply depot, and had the Protoss lament before me as they went quadruple pylon.
I landed in Gold League where I continued to 6 pool my way up the ladder where I then gained new enemies and no allies. A tactic I like to use which I learned from watching the bo5 series between Jaedong and Scarlett is going 6 pool and having a Spine Crawler build at the very top barely outside of your enemy zerg's vision. Much success has been made. 6 pooling though has also led me to have several losses with competent opponents well versed in the art of defending cheese.
Right now I only focus my attention on NewEgg tutorials on Youtube where I hope to gain the knowledge to know what video cards, power supplies, and whatever components I need to play Sc2 smoothly so I can play macro games without lag.. I also need to find a way to make money. At this point though it's become a pipe dream, just a dream time gone by. Currently sitting at #4 in gold league. I'd say that's accomplishment enough.
Then I realized. I realized just another con of buying Sc2 WoL. I had realized I needed to purchase the expansion pak, and then the expansion pak after that to get with an active community, each one probably costing more than the last. Oh well. I had already made my decision, no turning back. No turning back.
I read a post recently about the differences of sc2 and Sc1 that talked about how different the two games were showing that Sc2 wasn't better or worse than Sc1, just vastly different in the ways they're played. It made me think and appreciate Sc2 more and at the same time I thought the post would've converted Sc1 elitists deep seated in their beliefs that Sc1 is for the lesser skilled.
