Welcome to the NHK is a slice of life comedy encircling the life of a man known as Tatsuhiro Sato who is an antisocial hikikimori, a japanese term referring to someone who stays indoors as much as possible. He's an unemployed, unmotivated man with no real life goals. He fortunately meets a woman named Misaki who takes an interest in him. Through her help with counseling sessions and going through the pitfalls of such realistic problems like video game addiction and dealing with the tragic life problems others have combine to make a view of the more unfortunate times in life that people can relate to.
Bokurano is a mecha/psychological/dark anime about 15 kids who pilot a giant 500 meter robot one at a time to valiantly defend earth. It has a far more fictional story than "Welcome to the NHK" and the story escalates quickly when it's later discovered that whoever pilots the robot ends up dying as the robot uses their "life force" as fuel. The focus is mostly on the character driven plot with a story arc for each of the kids, and not so much the large robot fighting. The show does things that make you think differently about the conflicts within the story.
These anime shows that hum to a more sadder tune are some of my favorites. Thanks for reading, until next month.
