Seriously, I remember when the comment section on youtube wasn't all about insulting eachother and winning upvotes by writing overused phrases. And 90% of the time, the top 2 comments are both at the same time (insult + copy paste) like "does that link comes with a free virus as well, fucker?"
I can correlate this to the "has bad manners ruined gaming" thread, as this happens mostly on gaming videos'.
I remember having actual discussions on YT comments a while back.
I don't think quitting the community is the best solution, teamliquid would have been a different place if mods didn't nuke meme posts and hate copy pasta posts. Someone should start a campaign to start banning crap comments on youtube, or something like that.
Pretty pointless blog post I know, I just had to share my thoughts on this.

Then again more people seem to comment which was the point of it.

The Youtube comment section is pretty much unsalvageable. Probably the only solutions (and I use that word loosely) would be to bomb everything to hell to bring the comments down to manageable levels and then start over with better moderation, or for someone to create a well-moderated third party website to chat about Youtube videos. Every participating Youtuber would be able to make a different "thread" for each video, and post a link to that thread in the description of the Youtube video. Cherish those memories of Youtube discussion. You aren't likely to get any more of them.

Ironically, I find the comments on Purge's videos generally pretty decent

Good thing no one cares about youtube comments. There's a reason I avoid that kind of stuff like Twitter and Facebook too. It's always the same shit. Anyway, as for the whole up-vote thing. We technically have a similar system in a way, but it's in the form of gifting. It connects the old facebook crapola of sending your friends a gift with giving someone TL+. Whoop, whoop. If anyone were to do that to me, I'd ask TL if they could refund their money because I honestly have no interest in it. I'd find it flattering, but I have enough to go through in the general sections.

Thumbs up if you're still reading this blog in 2013

It's just like what happens to twitch.tv chat when there's over 10K ppl.

I know the solution

You're not meant to have discussions in Youtube comments. That is not what a comment (on a video) is intended for. Comments are for the viewers to write, and the content creators to read, if they choose to do so.
On a semi-related note, can we please stop with this "purge the internet" nonsense? Preventing people from posting mean things on the internet is an activity that would either require an unreasonable amount of effort or lead to an unreasonable amount of censorship. It's never going to happen, and if it did happen it would be a bad thing for everyone.
Internet is the form of media where anybody can say pretty much anything they want. It's up to you to avoid things you don't like and find communities and social circles that are right for you.
