It all started 2 years ago when I got the chance to graze upon the greenery that is just about to fade into a depressing grey. I've been struggling to move onto greener pastures now since having a taste of Brood War's perfection in balance, diversity, and amazing strategy defining real time strategies as we know it. Some claim that a game like it won't ever be made again, and still even after 15 years the game is still cherished by BW veterans who reminisce about the nostalgic filled days.
Now that I've played BW, I just keep coming back to it despite its rapidly decreasing user base with a good majority of players brushed away planting their seeds anew in such games like DotA 2, League of Legends, StarCraft 2, and just life in general. It's strange though, because even if I get bored of the game play itself and try to play some other video game to capture my attention, I just keep going back to StarCraft. Once you go to StarCraft, you never go back.
The last time I tried StarCraft 2, all of the graphics settings were the lowest possible and still my computer managed to lag an unfathomable amount.
Lag is probably one of my biggest peeves when playing BW. For some reason it feels like there's lag in 50 percent more of the games I join nowadays. It might be just me, but who knows. I feel as though some people can handle lag far better than others, and use it to their advantage. Often times when I play a game and a lag spike that lasts 10 minutes comes up, no one mentions it and they tolerate it to the best of their ability.
When you're playing, you make super fast clicks just to plan ahead of time so you're not on the move command when so and so lings are about to encounter your zealots. For those that adapt to such extreme lag, which makes it seem like you're watching a video that's going at 2 frames per second, you feel debilitated. Slowly your senses go awry as you try to bear with the frustration of having your main Nexus destroyed by 10 zerglings whilst having 8 zealots pain stakingly hut hutting their way to eliminate the evil bugs. Finally once all hope is lost as your main base is wasted away by countless elephants and cracklings, you have no choice to admit defeat, all the while you have this voice in the back of your head convincing you it was the lag that made you lose. Is it a case of who can adapt better?
Nowadays, I go to BW, play a few games with online friends, maybe play some Micro related UMS maps, and call it a day. I might turn on some music to zone out the unsettling squirmy zerg music and sound effects of the hatchery, and after I've finished playing, I call it a day. I already feel like after maybe 1.5 years of playing on and off I've improved compared to the time I first installed the game on day 1, and now that I've reached this far, my ceiling cannot go higher, and to invest time into improving to the next level in a game with a relatively small community just doesn't seem worth it. I'm hoping that there maybe a game of such pure creative strategy that will once again churn the flame of passion within me and literally cause my heart to beat 100 beats per minute just like when I first picked it up and learned of the RTS genre.

I already feel like after maybe 1.5 years of playing on and off I've improved compared to the time I first installed the game on day 1, and now that I've reached this far, my ceiling cannot go higher would probably improve significantly if you took the game more seriously and stuck with it
to invest time into improving to the next level in a game with a relatively small community just doesn't seem worth it why do you feel this way?

Definitely NOT my experience. I'm not sure why you have some much lag, but that would be annoying if you are getting consistent slideshow.
If you are talking about the latency delay, where you click and it takes a bit before a unit responds...that happens on BNET. If you play on servers like ICCup or fish with their launchers you won't have that issue.

Actually, people aren't leaving it. If anything it is doing better than ever. We have TLS on foreign side, and more and more ex-pro continue to return to Korean scene to compete in SOSPA leagues, which are getting better sponsorship and bigger prizes. China also just announced a fancy, SPL style team league.
Did I mention that there is a new server for BW in the works that will have features like a more accurate skill rating and auto matchmaking? That should be a nice positive boost for the player base if the launch is well executed and the server of good quality.
BW is alive and kicking. Maybe not as big as it was in 09', but definitely much bigger than in what was 9 months in WoL.

BW community is the best community. I love having a "small" community where you can talk to the pros like Draw, Technics, or Bakuryu. ^_^

I dont think better than ever is the correct term, but bw still has a devoted fan base and it rules and now I really wanna play again and get stomped

We'll...better than ever since SC2 came out and KeSPA stuff disbanded.

Broodwar is old in that it was released long ago, but its strategy and game play are unrivaled by its successors.
As for your major gripe about lag, I can only assume two things; 1. You are constantly playing on battle.net official servers like USEAST /USWest / Europe (although only east has any active players afaik) where there is indeed lag, rather than using a custom launcher such as iCCup launcher or Wlauncher to play on servers such as iCCup (The Abyss) or Fish (korean server) where the launchers will reduce latency/click delay, or, 2. You have something setup in your BW wrong which is making it lag horribly on your computer specifically (hence no one else complains, because its localized to your computer) in which case you might want to play a game of broodwar and check that you have CPU throttling enabled in BW (start a bw game vs a computer, hit f10, options, speed, put a checkmark in the box for Enable CPU Throttling). However since you said you play UMS with friends I assume your issue is with #1 rather than #2.
As for not improving because of a small community, I really don't understand this sentiment. Improvement is for your own sake, but even if you want to improve to gain recognition from friends and players alike, there are still plenty left in Broodwar. If you lack the motivation to play on your own, join something like the D-Ranks Teamleague and have fun improving with a team! If you want to reach higher pinnacles of broodwar, play on Fish vs the koreans and experience just how many people still play this and how much you can still improve.
There will never be another game like broodwar, so you should just enjoy the fact that it exists and play it!

Everything else is shit compared to StarCraft. Then why are everyone leaving it? Honestly, there are more people who leave than people who join because it's a hard game to get into, while the old players leave for one reason or another (RL, boredom, etc). However, as far as Blizzard RTS games go, I do constantly think "I'd rather be playing Brood War" while playing them. RTS games with a different style (such as C&C) are interesting in their own right and have a different (not necessarily better or worse) appeal.
Honestly, I think the pro scene has a lot to do with the lasting appeal of Starcraft. Without that, the game just doesn't have the same feel to it.

better then ever can't be correct as we were more players before the beta for sure ^^ But currently i've been online and checking whats going on almost every day for about a year again and BW is going upward, not downward currently. People quit sc2 that played a while and some join without having played it before. More Kespa players have come back to BW including Sea and Best. (maybe only shortterm before military service) We are running TLS, defilers, THLS and more tournaments. But the most important point is that the SOSPA tournaments are really getting somewhere. Let's see it for how it is: Still awful few people play BW and it's hard to find consistent opponents over C- ^^ But i think we passed the bottom of the valley.

LoL and Dota2 are really bad games. You should play Candy Crush instead.

What server? Do you have news of this? Can you give me a name, so I can Google it? Auto-matchmaking is so important to me, that might be just what I need to try and really get into Brood War. I never did, since SC2 was my first serious RTS and I had a lot of problems with ICCup.

Under development, but the person in charge has proven very reliable thus far, I think he is talking about some sort of testing/release in like Nov/Dec or early 2014.

Start using standard iCCup antihack launcher: http://www.iccup.com/files/view/Anti-Hack_Launcherr.html or this awesome multi-function fanmade launcher: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=414636
Lags sometimes happen, but from my experience of playing on those launchers, about 70-80% of games go smoothly.
Also, Broodwar scene got smaller because of the way of life: all hype and money is constantly transferred towards new RTS gaming products, without much regard to their, I'd say 'strategical quality'. On the other hand, only now it's revealed who played the game only for the love of it and who was more into it because everyone else was too.
