I was also thinking this. On June 11 2013 18:50 Vindicare605 wrote: Yea the major point for dragging on the torture scenes is to illustrate Bolton's character. While his father is cruel in a more general sense, the bastard is fucking sadistic. Way worse than his father ever was. Illustrating that contrast I feel is important for the rest of the story, so the torture scenes are what they are. Can you explain why you feel it's important?

Two main reasons, firstly character exposition, but secondly, and mainly, to put the reader in an uncomfortable position where they are expecting something different happen (a resolution, a pardon, a rescue) but instead are treated to more of the same. The nihilism is multi-layered. It's really an 'assassination of hope', in the same way that in the end of the Wicker Man, each layer of the 'process' to put him in the Wicker Man feels like there may be an escape, but as his legs are broken you realise that your hope was misplaced and the dagger is driven into your expectations further and further. Having Bolton torture Theon for a purpose like breaking his will would paint him in a different light to what he is now, which is basically psychopathically sadistic.

It would have been rushed, BUT in the context of Theon it was perfect. It raised the possibility that Theon would stand strong...then took it away when he disappointed himself yet again. Really sc4k? Lets see u get tortured for god knows how long and also have your penis cut off. Then you can talk about dignity

But come on, we all know that Theon has less resolve than most. He is one of the weaker characters in the show both when he is in a strong position or in a weak. I don't know what I'd be like in that sort of situation but I am quite a stubborn old mule.

What's wrong with the bastard? Not only does he torture theon to send a message that pillaging the north while their back is turned is a bad idea but he also does it in hilarious ways. Anyone who didn't lol at the cockblock with trumpet scene has no sense of humour. Besides theon deserves it, murdering children because he's got daddy issues? Tsk tsk. Think of the bolton bastard kinda like batman of the north.

I didn't lol at the trumpet scene because not only was it obviously going to occur (the cockblocking) it was more a feeling of dread on the behalf of Theon rather than amusement. If morbid, simplistic slapstick is to your liking then good for you. While Bolton is certainly accomplishing the task he was apparently given, the fact that he is doing it with such joy is what makes him a despicable character. While dany herself is pretty meh, I enjoy pretty much every part of the eastern stuff as much as westeros, if not more. Drogo was a badass, the unsullied are an army of badass, Jorah is a friendzoned badass, everyone that talks about/to Selmy say hes a badass, and TheLittleOne is a really freakin tall badass. I'm just not seeing how anyone could dislike watching an army be assembled that has the sole purpose of demolishing everyone else on the shows casting list. Dany is at the point where any of her elite four could go head to head and win against the best pokemon trainers westeros has, Dragons could even be considered overkill at this point. Dany's story is just undeniably attractive, even if you don't like the character. The visuals of the continent, the epicness of the dragons, the odds she has battled against. It's just exciting!

The fact that he tortures without any remorse, is whats wrong with him you shouldnt be approving of ability to carry out inhumane tortures with glee, rather you should be repulsed by it and sicken, i'm not GRRM but i think he didnt have it in mind that he wanted his readers to go "oh wow how fucken amazing is this guy" and that cockblock scene wasnt funny...you knew what was coming and it wasnt anything pleasant.

Simplistic slapstick comedy? lol wtf. You feeling a sense of dread for theon indicates you sympathise or can relate to him, I'm sorry you must really hate those scenes. Dany's story is quite possibly the most simplistic one in the show, using it to belittle me for enjoying theon's scenes is laughable at best. Yes if you enjoy a girl going from nothing to everything because she's hot and white knights everywhere fall to their knees to appease her because she's got tits and dragons complex then good for you I guess. Might wanna check out fanfiction.net while you are at it.

I mean, the dude has been maimed, flayed and castrated. You'd think there would atleast be more blood and excrement on him? Are the directors afraid the Theon scenes are getting a bit too graphical? To me he didn't seem all that more broken than before...
