dany's scene should've been used last week and either bran going north or stannis answering the night watches call should've been the closing scene.

They been doing a start/end with ice/fire theme so far, S1 started with ice, ended with fire, S2 started with fire, ended with ice, S3 started with ice and ended with fire. It as such it was inevitable that Dany would get the last scene in S3 (and the first in S4!)

Interestingly, I don't believe this is what was originally planned, as Martin said that he wanted the end of S1 to be the northernmen getting the ravens from Robb to raise their arms to ride south. It was cut, however, due to the huge budgetary cost that would have been incurred for a minute long scene.

I think it's an interesting stylistic choice, as it really highlight's Dany's importance going forward far more than the White Walkers moving upon the Wall. Personally, I find her story far more compelling, though the ravens going to the wind and Tywin crumpling the parchment before burning it would have been worth it by itself.

Shit, mentioned the books... lol

Also I was never quite sure why Stannis is the only one that seems to respond to the requests from the wall.

No one else gives a damn about the Wall or what goes on up there, they only want the throne which is incredibly transient of a possession, considering all of the politicking and backstabbing that goes on, and Dany gearing up with dragons to come across the sea. Stannis recognizes (or perhaps just Melisandre tells him and he follows blindly) that the true threat is beyond the Wall. Remember Osha saying that they were walking the wrong way before she departed?

I think she did him a favor, that way he looks like he fought the Wildlings instead of looking like a deserter. Pretty sure she is a good enough shot to have been able to put that arrow in his forehead if she wanted to.

Yeah, I don't think it's a coincidence that she managed to hit 3 straight non-vital spots on a moving target. Poor girl...
Except he didnt need to pretend he wasnt helping the wildlings, given he could casually explain everything that happened and where the raiders are. He would be believed. If she shot him in non vital areas its because she liked him too much to kill him, but not enough to not try.

Oh sorry, I didn't think she cared how the Night's Watch would react to him. I just mean that she *should* have and *could* have killed him, but just couldn't bring herself to do it. I was just pointing out that her marksmanship is clearly very good given her shot selection.

Given the medicinal skills in this setting those shots are likely to be kill shots at a later time anyway. He has to ride a long way and infection would set it resulting in amputation or death. Whether she "meant" to kill him or not she still fucking shot him. With someone as evidently experienced in the ways of killing as her, she has to know the likelihood of him living after that is pretty small. Especially the one in the thigh. Realistically, he wouldn't walk right ever again even if they manage to get him medical attention fast enough.

IRL, Jaime would be dead by now. Maesters seem superior in knowledge to their RL counterparts.

This guy gets it. 50 men versus fully armed castle of a lord commanding ~2-4k men (going by chess pieces)? Right on.

The Greyjoy and Stannis plots were the most exciting parts of the episode, if you ask me. They set up cool cliffhangers. Stannis doing a face turn... whaa?

They have raiding parties all over. And Greyjoy seemed to indicate they had actually seized some significant lands.

Agreed. I think it's more because of last weeks episode than anything. Last week would have been an amazing season finale.

You kidding? It would have been awful as a cliffhanger. The kind of thing people HATE with TV shows, where they milk the whole "next season!" crap. You have to hit a climax, then some sort of decline to keep people from getting hooked on gimmicks instead of the entire story line(s).

You're watching a glorified soap opera. A really good glorified soap opera, but cliffhangers are part of the deal. Indeed, they'er the whole point of every season finale so far.

Is anyone else bothered by Cersei's black eyebrows? I like the actress and I know she's not blonde, but I still feel they could have done something about it.
Edit: bah, I understand that it was probably intended. It does make for an appropriate effect. Still looks weird though.

Just because you have blonde hair does not mean you have blonde eyebrows. It is actually pretty common for blonde haired people to have brown eyebrows. My hair was the same platinum blonde color as Daenerys when I was young but my eyebrows were dark brown.

I know that of course duh. It still looks weird and I can only explain that by the fact that she's not blonde. If it didn't look weird like it's the case for many blonde women with darker eyebrows I wouldn't have mentioned it .
It may just be my vision being biased by my image of the actress though, that I can admit.

Edit: doesn't bother me at all on Daenerys btw :D

The eyebrows don't bother me but the changing of hair color every season for some of the characters bother me. Are they not saving the wigs after each season? if they're dying their hair shouldn't the stylist write down what color mixture was used?

They could have ended s3 with the LoL priestess. That seems fairly fiery to me. I agree that they ended on dany because she is in "fireish" lands

For everyone bashing Daenerys storyline boring & dull. It's the fault of the directors/writers of the show. There were a lot of stuff with the slave cities, the second sons that weren't told elaborated on. It feels rushed and tbh plain bad. READ THE BOOKS! Also characters not even mentionned like strong belwas :'(

The problem is this is a tv show with 99% of characters are all in one area and one character is in a totally different area. Even from the beginning of the books -- no spoilers, just an example -- there were really two storylines. One story line is the Game of Thrones in Westeros + the zombie stuff. The other story is the Targarians on a whole different continent. One book is basically about grand politics and war and cunning and the other one is an adventure story of a brave girl.
Martin screwed up by choosing to try and jam in two divergent books that happen to be set on one continent into one book. But at least in book form you can just jam in more pages and sub stories to try to cover it up. On the tv screen when you can budget only 50 minutes you cannot do that effectively. And every time they try to shove Daenrys down your throat, it becomes more jarring because you know better actors and better characters are getting less and less screen time. And for what do we miss out on more scenes from Mace -- Ceaser leading another army from the north! -- or Littlefinger or Oleanna Redwyne? So she can waltz around like at some weird rock concert? or do another pouty BUT IAM STORMBORN GIVE ME OBEDIENCE! or watch another Jorah friend zone bitter face shot? its just plain stupid and HBO should have been brave enough to just say no to Danarys completely.

I would imagine Daenerys would be very relevant to Westeros later on, considering she is amassing an army and planning to invade Westeros.

Maybe. But the payoff for this invasion is going to happen when, another 2 seasons further away? So we now have 5 seasons of at least 10 minutes per episode on average, of one person that is completely unrelated to anything else. Think of how many more relevant to Westeros characters they could have inserted in that time they devoted to a thing that might pan out in 5 years.

She's way more relevant to the story than Bran or Sam or Theon imo. She's going to invade Westeros with motha fuckin dragons and more soldiers than anyone else.

When? In another 2-3 years? Even the White Walkers are more relevant to Westeros right now and Bran is going out there to kill them with magic super powers or whatever. I agree that Sam seems pretty useless. Theon is there to show how dumb Vikings are.

u should read some history on vikings. seriously

Soap Opera is really just a term for the genre of serialized drama. Game of Thrones presents an interesting take on the soap because it isn't built on conventional gimmicks to hook you episode by episode or season by season, instead it's trying to craft each season as a whole cohesive story which bends some story-telling rules (which makes it interesting) but does follow a traditional rising action->climax->falling action pattern and is going to use careful building to create tension and drama, not oh lets just stop here and dangle everyone because we can. Every season has had the highest action in episode 9 so far, and falling action->setup for the next in episode 10.

I do have an issue with this season as far as structure goes though: this season didn't rise in intensity enough, it just sort of went along, unlike s1 which really built furiously once Robert died up to the climax, and s2 built to an inevitable battle with the tension rising and coming to a head in an epic episode. This season, well it just stayed at the same stuff is happening pitch, not really building to anything in particular since the climax was meant to be an out of nowhere shock. BUT if you paid attention to prior story structure on the show and in modern television, you knew to be expecting something big since it was the penultimate episode and it wasn't going to just skate by, so I was already bracing for impact, and the reason I flew through the episodes leading up to it wasn't that dramatic tension was at a fever pitch, but because I really wanted to see what twist it was going to spring before the end, which, I mean, they managed to make it work because I did really want to see it, but that was sort of meta-expectations and not really built by the storytelling quality.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

Anyone else find it odd that Theon attempted to defend the fact that he was named Theon for...two punches? First punch you chalk it up to silly ignorance, but the second time he knew he was going to get hit. And he decided to resist. Woops! So thats what a punch felt like, I'd forgotten, its been so long -- two seconds and all. I better just go along with this Reek thing unless I want a third punch!

Seemed like a rushed thing they needed to tack on, that hes psychologically broken and all that. It really should of been done in two scenes.

^ THat's pretty much Theon in a nutshell though. He has a small amount of dignity but he quickly values personal comfort above it in the end. It would have been rushed, BUT in the context of Theon it was perfect. It raised the possibility that Theon would stand strong...then took it away when he disappointed himself yet again.

Yea the major point for dragging on the torture scenes is to illustrate Bolton's character.

While his father is cruel in a more general sense, the bastard is fucking sadistic. Way worse than his father ever was. Illustrating that contrast I feel is important for the rest of the story, so the torture scenes are what they are.

The second I saw that awesome montage of Yara collecting the 50 toughest killers on the iron islands (he has a scar, that means he's tough!!!), I instantly imagined what's going to happen - Yara heroically arrives just as Theon is killed by Bolton's Bastard, and is about to escape herself when she is captured and another 10 episodes of her getting tortured ensue.

I do have to say I'm EXTREMELY satisfied that finally the Lannisters are approaching the elephant in the room - aka Joffrey needs to be stopped soon. I hope it happens quick!!!!
