Hello, Team Liquid!
I couldn't find any tool to get sever pings for the Starcraft II servers the other day, so I decided to make my own.
This is a very simple program. Just run it, wait an unreasonable amount of time for it to finish, and gander at the results. There's even a refresh button if you're feeling frisky.
You can download it, or it's source, here: http://sdrv.ms/12XmfX5 For the short link apprehensive: + Show Spoiler +
How does it work? + Show Spoiler +
Why would I want to run this? + Show Spoiler +It's useful for if you want to play on a different server, but aren't sure which one is the closest to you. Alternatively, you could just be curious to see your ping on the different servers.
Is it accurate? + Show Spoiler +It's not exact. It uses a trace route rather than an actual ping, because blizzard doesn't allow pings on their servers. What you get is a ping for somewhere very close to the server, but not the server itself.
How do I know if it's working? + Show Spoiler +The progress bar will be moving.
As for if it's not working, I'm not exactly in a position to test what happens when the trace route fails. If everything works as I think it does, you should get the same response even if a server is down, due to the fact you're not actually pinging the server (See above). As for firewall issues, I never checked. I wouldn't expect it to be an issue.
Why is it taking so long? + Show Spoiler +Could be a couple of things.
1. I don't know how to do multithreading, and I did it horribly wrong. 2. It just takes awhile to do the trace route. (Probably this one)
Didn't someone already make this? + Show Spoiler +I thought someone did. I just can't find it. Feel free to link to it if you find it, I don't see any reason to have multiple threads for the same basic program floating around.
Have you made anything else for us? + Show Spoiler ++ Show Spoiler +

This looks to have been wrote in VS2012. You could likely just download an express version of it(if Microsoft offers it), or download the latest .NET framework.
Works for me though.

I didn't get to test it on very many computers, only 2 windows 8, and one windows 7. All of them worked.
Only thing I could think of would be the .net framework. It's throwing a file not found exception, and unless your version of windows doesn't have command prompt, I can only think of a missing library.
Visual studio is very new to me. I wish I could say I knew for certain what was wrong.
You can also try running it with administrator privileges.

Just because it is a exe-file doesn't mean it is a virus ..........
But no it doesn't seem to work for me on Win7 64-bit. I'm not sure if I have visual studio 2012 runtime redistributable installed, but it didn't warn me at startup. If fairly sure I have the latest .net installed.

Seems to be a widespread problem.
Time to scour google.

Okay, I put a test file in skydrive.
If someone with a problem can go ahead and run that, and tell me if they still experience the problem, that'd be great. It's called SCII Server Ping Test.exe

Just tested on Win8 64-bit, none of the files work.

Same here. Win7 64 bit. Does not work.

In the process of fixing it. I didn't want to use a setup file, but it appears I was a bit optimistic in that regard.
The setup file is going to include the required .net framework, and the visualbasic powerpacks, if you need them.
It's in the skydrive under "Server Pings.zip" right now, if you guys could give that a whirl.

works fine here, win7 64bit - the skydrive server pings file that is.
|
Win7 64b here - application launched. I have older Visual Studio on pc, so my guess is that you didn't build it right and it requires development .net framework on pc - not just client .net framework.

Hi, can you open up command prompt, and type in "tracert 12.129.202.154" for me?
I'm guessing you're getting a final response of <1 ms, which one of my methods didn't account for. All of those values look wrong, however, which leads me to believe your trace route is being stopped prematurely by something.
