The two vids on the previous pages are absolute gold for a beginner.
-Learn how spotting works. - VID
-Learn how penetration works. - VID
-Learn basic teamplay tactics. Well, 2 mainly: Maximise your guns on the field by sharing damage amap. Minimise their guns on the field by focusing fire. This is super simple, but is much more than you can expect from a public game. Use it in platoons though.
-Learn the roles of the tanks. Lights, Meds and Heavies. Within each super type, there are subtypes which are just as important. One heavy may be a brawler, another a sniper etc. These differences are not very distinguished on low tiers, but don't let that fool you. They are very important.
-Learn not to get mad, when you loose even though you play very well. This will happen. A lot. Get used to it.
EDIT: Have fun! This is a game after all. Play with your friends. Like any other mmo, this is much more enjoyable when you play with your friends.

I just pretend that it's a singleplayer game with crappy AI.

Finally finished downloading and got in to my first game, seems really fun, can't believe I waited so long to try it. What's the general consensus as far as playing lots of tanks versus specializing in a few (kind of like champs/heroes in moba's)? Also are there any recommendations as far as what tanks to play, not knowing anything I just clicked the first tank on my list lol.
Edit - In game name is vvSiegvv, if there's any groups of TL members who play or any form of channels/lobbies let me know!

First game each day with a tank gives you 2x xp, so seen in that light, more tanks = more 2x xp. You are going to have credit problems though, especially without premium.
Some people pick a line to get to the end of it asap. This is a mistake in my opinion. Higher tier tank, does not mean more powerful(relatively) or more fun. Play every tank for the purpose of playing it, not just to advance. Well maybe not the m3 lee, but every other tank.
I will say this about what not play. The German line is more challenging to make decent results in, than say the russian. I certainly which I didn't start out with the germans.
|
It's more about playstyle, really. Every "race" has its perks and drawbacks, at least for the most part. German line i'd say is the hardest to utilize properly, since the guns tend to be subpar up to tier7 (accurate, but low alpha), and almost all tanks have their engines/transmissions in the front behind a weakspot, which means they will break alot. Russians are considered the "brawlers" of this game, decent armor, decent (but inaccurate) guns, on some tanks problems with ammo racks. Overall easy/forgiving to play, where as germans and especially french tanks are unforgiving. French tanks are mobile, pack a big punch, but need to reload for ages since they use autoloader (think of it as a revolversystem) and are practically unarmored. Brits and Chinese, well.. Didn't play chinese at all, and brits just up to tier4 i think, so no idea.
Thats just generally speaking though.

Ok I've played 6/7 games now and watched up some stuff on youtube + the videos mentioned earlier. I know of course I'm still a complete scrub but I think I understand the roles and the basic mechanics at least. One thing I'm really not sure about is exactly what to be spending and what all the currencies are for. So exp goes to the crew, but what exactly does the crew do for your tank? And as far as research goes am I free to research whatever I feel like, or will I eventually get punished for researching the "wrong" things?
^^Thanks a lot for the help everyone.
|
Experience goes to the crew, exactly. It's efficiency. A 100% loader reloads faster than a 75% crewmember, a 100% driver is able to accelerate more quickly (topspeed doesn't change though), gunner aims in faster, the commander can spot tanks further (you can see them further away, otherwise they would stay invisible), stuff like that.
You can research whatever you want, you can't get "stuck", but if you research something that you don't like (like a tank, and you feel it's not "your" tank), you have to grind the experience for something else again.
Might be a bit mumbled now, but i just woke up and english isn't my first language. ^^

So would it be accurate in saying that the stats I see on a tank when I mouse over them are more like the "optimal stats", being the stats I would get with a 100% crew?

Yes.
Also, had my best game so far! (statswise)
Got 6 kills with my tier IV t-28 in a up to VI game.
1350 xp, top gun and scout hunter medal

I watched it some yesterday, but the guy did nothing but rage the whole time 20+ min. Got old very fast It happens. I saw some of it too. First few games were good then turned around and he started to get peeved. Doesn't really bother me, there's still a lot to learn (for someone like me at least) by watching a good players first-person gameplay.
Checked out his YouTube though. More entertaining stuff on there. The lads he plays with make it fun too.

Just downloaded. Kinda fun so far.
Is there any way to remove tanks from my garage to free up slots? I mean, I bought one new tank that I ended up hating, and now I have to pay for every single new tank I want? Or I can stay tier 1 forever and keep it f2p. Seems like a very pay2win game so far.

Or I can stay tier 1 forever and keep it f2p. Seems like a very pay2win game so far. Other than paying for Premium (+50% credits and xp for a limited time), it's not REALLY pay to win. More like pay to accelerate. You gain XP on tanks by playing, and use that XP (silver star) to research upgrades for your tank and work toward new tanks in the tech tree. Click "Research" on one of your tanks, it's pretty intuitive once you work out the different kinds of currency (silver xp and credits being the free/more important stuff, that you gain by playing). You are not Tier limited at all by playing free forever.
To get rid of tanks in your garage, just right-click them and Sell them. You can also decide whether or not to get rid of the ammo/upgrades you purchased for it. Either way, once you've researched something, it's unlocked for good, you may just have to literally buy it (credits) again for new tanks, etc. if you sold it.
|
You can always sell your tanks you don't play anymore. Just right click on the tank and sell.
For new players learning the basic mechanics of the game is very important.
Learn the characteristics of the tanks you are going against and understand how that relates to your own tank. If you are driving a fast medium tank with a low penetration gun you need to understand right away trying to trade shots frontally with a armored TD is a bad idea.
Learn the maps. There are "death zones" on every map that you normally want to spend as little time in as possible. These are usually flat areas with very little cover. A good practice I recommend is finding 1 or 2 good starting spots to go to at the start of the game on each map for each side.
Just knowing this you will be able to crush a lot of the new players in the low tiers that are just randomly driving all over the map.
Someone asked about crew skills. One crew skill that I recommend on EVERY TANK is sixth sense on your commander. What this does is a little light bulb will pop up shortly after your tank is spotted. If you are spotted you are going to be a target. This is vital information and you can normally figure out where someone is spotting you from and take cover.
If you enjoy the game getting a premium account is well worth it. It costs less then going out to a movie once a month and really helps get you credits and exp to progress up the tech trees.
What I don't recommend is spending 4x that much cash and buying a tier 8 premium tank right off the bat because you want to play the bigger tanks. The higher tier games are very unforgiving to new players. If you don't understand the basics you will not have a fun time at tier 8 as one mistake could take you out of the game.
When you do get killed (and it will happen a lot) don't just immediately rage out. Think about what happened leading up to that and look around yourself. Did you advance way ahead of your team by yourself and get surrounded? Think about what you could have done differently that could have prevented you from dying. Sometimes there is nothing you could have done.
Learn from your mistakes and you will become a better player.

The only thing paying gets you is to higher tiers/more tanks faster. You'll appreciate the extra playtime getting there for the added learning, as once you get to higher tiers wasting ammo and getting your tank destroyed become increasingly more costly. Ironically it's pretty pay to lose for most new players who jump into tier 8+ through paying and don't know what they're doing.

Ah, thanks. I had no idea I could sell the tanks I wasn't using. I had considered just buying a sweet tank off the bat (free game, might as well spend SOME money eh?), but then realized I'd just be against seasoned players and probably ragequit.
I've noticed that there are NO SPGs in lower-tier games, but SPGs at teir 2 DO exist. Is there a reason for this? Playing an artillery piece seemed pretty cool to me, not sure why no one else is doing it.

Arties get seeded in tier3 matches and upward, since the highest arty at the moment is tier8 (equivalent to tier10 xp-wise).
There is no arty on tier 2 iirc, they start on tier 3. Maybe they changed it, didn't check.

You're right, my memory fooled me. Still, they get seeded into tier3 and higher (every tank/tier has a specific matchmaking). So you will never see an SPG on t1/t2 matches, since they won't get seeded in there. They would also be ridiculously op there. ^^
Just as a tip, check on the higher arties before you take one, since there are pretty huge differences between them.

Thanks, looks like it'll take some theorycrafting. I was going to go down the American arty line, but I'm open to whatever. Will players in t3 battles spot appropriately?
