Not too long ago I played Tales of Destiny, released around the same time as FF7 and it certainly was a lot more fun than FF7 despite being rather disappointing for a Tales game. Currently I'm learning Japanese to be able to play Tales of Eternia (I immediately stopped when I heard the first word of the English dub, so awful), among other things. Change the combat options to "active" and "fastest" and combat speeds up dramatically. How far did you get in FF7. disc 1 is solely about setting the atmosphere, things pick up in disc 2 to a pretty frantic pace.

Like I would still know that, it's been a while. I did finish a bunch of dungeons etc though. Left that city, I guess, and then some. I think I spent around 10-15 hours on it. Sure, torture might not be the best word, but since I actually did nearly fall asleep in the middle of the day, it wouldn't have been much fun to keep playing. I really wanted to give it a try because people were saying it's so great, otherwise I wouldn't even have lasted that long...

He probably escaped midgar and made it to kalm and then never advanced past cloud's retelling of his past. that is the slowest part of the game (kalm) but i mean its in the name. how he felt that midgar was boring i dunno. i just think wall market kinda sucks when you don't know where to go.

Yeah I could totally understand getting frustrated in wall market. Or, if you were bad at this type of game, I could understand getting frustrated with the consecutive boss fights to escape Midgar.

Man I want to play FF7 now... for like the 10th time. <3 Materia Bad at JRPGs? Unlikely. I probably have a combined 5000+ hours of JRPG playtime. Tales Series, CT, Bahamut Lagoon, Lufia Series, Secret of Mana, Seikendensetsu 3, Terranigma... Interestingly I don't even remember having multiple consecutive boss fights. But I probably stopped at the point Xizor was talking about.

Do people really think X had a better storyline than VIII? Maybe it's just because VII, VIII, and IX were so amazing (IMO), but I was really underwhelmed by X. Oh and God don't even get me started on XIII... I hated that game with a passion.
