And about the Kobe amnesty thing, I just realized they can't resign him for an entire season IRC. So only way it would happen is if he has to sit out almost the whole season due to injury/rehabilitation and his approval most likely.

Kobe's been in the league since most of us were kids and we grew up watching him. It's not hard to see that some of these people are fans of players first before the team, because to them Kobe defines basketball. It's better than being a bitter person who does nothing but bash these fans or whatever.

That is true. It is like the kids today who are growing up on LBJ. Except Kobe is more popular worldwide than LBJ, even at this point still. (if LBJ had gone to NY it might have already changed...whole other discussion though)

Gary Vitti says that the Lakers are going to try and get Kobe (who's accepted the challenge) to play the first game of next season.

This seems extremely far-fetched but I hope it will happen.

The thing I don't want to happen is for him to be Kobe and come back the first game of next season cause he's so damn competitive, but he's not ready yet (and based on medical experts he probably shouldn't be) and just reinjures himself again in such a way that he'd be forced to retire.

What a shame, poor Kobe. I was really hoping they'd make a run in the playoffs. I wonder if the Lakers go on a run now, will the media try and bring up some kind of argument like "was Kobe holding the other stars back?" just to try and stir controversy

Well, Kobe is a monster at getting back from injuries and definitely thinks that he can overcome this one, although there cannot be a definite timetable for return until he enters the first few months of his rehab process.

However, I don't think he will be back for the start of the season. He will try to wait it out and see what the team can do without him and if it starts out the way it started this season (with them doing horribly) then I believe he will definitely come back before the All-Star Break, heck maybe even before 2014.

But, on the other hand, this is a warrior and will do everything he can do get back for the start of the season. He is one of those people who sets a goal and makes sure that he works his ass off to accomplish it.

If the doctors clear him, he will probably play.

@itkovian. As hopeless as a deep playoff run seems, it would be interesting to see how the media handles it if by some miracle the Lakers do go on that run.

It's an issue of genetic luck more than an issue of will.

Dominique came back from one, but for every Dominique there's 10x more like Isaiah Thomas and Charles Barkley who couldn't. And it's not like Isaiah Thomas couldn't tolerate pain or wasn't a hard worker.

TBH, I think saying he'll be back to start the season is just to keep season ticket holders and excite the fans. I'd put money that it won't happen.
