Yeah you don't see NEARLY as much games of War3 as there are Starcraft. Freedom was a good War3 player; I got my style with Night Elf from him and Moon (mostly him)

Yeah you don't see NEARLY as much games of War3 as there are Starcraft. That's only because you've been trained to see it that way. It really has gotten bigger and bigger, and bigger, everywhere except Korea. But most people here would never really know about that because a) this is a StarCraft site, so naturally they're going to focus on SC and have a natural bias against War3, and b) this site has a strong focus on Korea to the point where many people unrealistically idolize the country. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I think the easiest way to compare SC to WC3 is to do a rough comparison of total prize money given out to both games in the past year.

like... # of sponsored teams, # of major tournaments/year, amount of prize money, amount of money going into teams, amount of salary being paid to players, etc.

Outside korea it's different, war3 is one of the most popular games out there in all those rankings and i'd bet beats starcraft easily in the rest of the world.

That's open to debate, but whether it is or not is really irrelevant for reasons already mentioned. I'd keep an eye on China and certain other parts of the world. They're making progress that not many people here are very aware of.

Sure games are played online and there are very many offline tournaments around the year, but that takes a lot away from the potential televised leagues in Korea where the game can potentially fully blossom. This is why I think it can never develop into what Starcraft is in Korea, despite it's global popularity. Fixed. It will almost surely never develop into what StarCraft is. But that's exactly the problem that many people have: they try to compare it to StarCraft and fail to realize that it isn't StarCraft, and that StarCraft isn't necessarily the ideal concept of what a game should be. Although it is very successful and deserving of the respect it gets, I don't think it would be a good thing for gaming if everything were too similar to it. The best of the best are too spread apart and can really only play every once in a while, not on a daily basis. It also contributes to why skill develops so slowly in War3, there are very few "up and comers" in the War3 scene compared to the SC scene (where there seems to be too many). It's kinda like Street Fighter in the US compared to Street Fighter in Japan. The Japanese have a concentrated scene skill-wise, where the best players are able to play against each other (or at least the best in the area) frequently. In the US, it's very hard and not cost-effective for someone like Justin Wong to travel to the west coast to practice with Pyrolee, for example. Actually, it seems as if you're unaware just how often the top players really play eachother. Not even counting practice games, these guys literally encounter eachother all the time through various events such as WC3L, InCup, NGL, or Ladder (which is worthwhile at times), and those are just the regular events that occur once a week each (except for ladder). There are lots of other tournaments out there that literally pop up all the time. It's not the same as playing in a televised league once a week, but it's certainly a respectable amount of time to play against worthy opponents. However, as far as up and coming players go, you really have to be in touch with the scene (much like you need to be with StarCraft) to truly understand who is up and coming and who has potential. There are quite a few developing players out there who are getting stronger and stronger every day. Take Kaki for instance. A little over a year ago, I was in the same team as this guy and LongWalk, and although they were good players, they really weren't anything too special at the time. Just this past week, he won InCup in a very impressive fashion (most notably the dismantling of Satiini in the finals). He's improved enormously over the past year, and even more so in the past few months. Although he isn't at the level of Grubby or ToD or Sky, he is developing, as are many others. It's really all about time. StarCraft may have a greater pool of up and coming players, but it has a bigger headstart and a much more concentrated professional scene. Everything has to be dealt with within it's own context.

Anyone ^^;' I could say the exact same about StarCraft. And to be honest with you I could truthfully mean it when I say it too. But we would be pretty ignorant to base a large part of our opinions around that. No ones questioning the overwhelming popularity of StarCraft in Korea, but you really have to be careful with what you see and what you interpret. There are a lot of circumstances you have to consider. As far as FreeDoM goes, again it's really great to see him doing this well. I'm not as in touch with the overall skill of SC pro-gamers like I once was though, so I'm not really sure how "good" he actually is. What do you guys think about him? Does he look like he's the real deal, or do you think he might not go too much further?
