I don't think anyone seriously thinks Howard is going to have a bigger effect on Kobe's play than Nash will. Team success relies on strong defensive performance from Howard, but the greater effect, whether good or bad, will be caused by how well Nash and Kobe synergize.

I was surprised with how well the bulls were playing with there pre season opener, i think they're being underrate right now, seeing as their core has not changed (all starters except rose are still around). And I'm sure thibodou could make something out of their bench, being the strong coach that he is. I'd still put the bulls at a 4th or 5th seed.

How do you guys rate Denver's chances this year?
|
As long as McGee isn't trying to dunk from the 3 point line then I think they could surprise some people.

East will be a pretty stacked conference, sure Heat are clear favorite but I'm not counting out the Bulls this season.

Well I meant in terms of defense. Howard is great but he hasn't really had the ability to stop guys like Lebron, Wade, Durant or even his new teammate Kobe from doing monstrous things to his team before. It's more important to have a perimeter defender to crack those guys with Howard as backup. Which is what people keep hoping Ron Artest is when he hasn't been able to do that for a while either.

Very, very good. Could be a top 4 seed. If LA didn't get Dwight they would actually be even possibly the #2 seed.
Of course this all depends on Danillo Gallinari being healthy and Javale McGee playing like he did in the playoffs vs LA for an entire season. With their depth the regular season will be a breeze because they have so many lineups to throw and wear down everyone which we've seen from them over and over for years.
Denver actually has a shot at being top 5 in both defense and offense which would be devastating for any team facing them in the playoffs. If McGee's defense gets to good levels him + Iggy + Faried is a fearsome defensive and rebounding unit. Possibly even better than what LA has. Lawson could have a breakout offensive year (again) and as I said before if Gallo is healthy this could spell major problems for everyone in the WCF. Loaded perimeter teams like San Antonio, the Clippers, Denver, and OKC only need enough defense to allow them to bomb away all day from 3 point land while their superstars slowly grind you to a pulp.

I highly doubt it because they lost Asik, Brewer and Korver. Chicago's bench was a pretty big part of their success so I don't know how they'll make it to 4th or 5th seed levels even if Rose was healthy.
|
Well when rose comes back hinrich will be on the bench, and he could make up for korvers offense and even be a better defender. Asik never had a great impact on their production. Brewer is the biggest lost, but I don't see how losing brewer would drop them down any lower than a fifth seed, especially when rose comes back mid season. Remember bulls had the best record last season with many more injuries other than rose himself.

Offensive synergy between a 1 and 2 is pretty overrated. Dwight Howard is a much much larger(haha,) addition than Steve Nash. Despite what some (Ace,) think about Howard's offensive game, he is going to score three-quarters of his attempts at the rim, while playing a prolific-passing but passing-reluctant shooting guard and Steve Nash so......there's that. And the idea that he's a net negative offensive player in any sense needs some serious evidence. Howard is freaking good.
I suppose when you say "effect on Kobe's play," that could mean that it will dip his usage rates to below 30% for the first time since the glorious '04 Lakers - I might agree with that sentiment from a strict interpretation.

To me the additions of dwight and steve nash means that nash will have a very good big man, in addition to all of his other options. We haven't seen dwight or nash play with players that are as good as the lakers starting lineup ever.
if nash gets a good pass to dwight chances are dwight will score.
If nash gets a good pass to kobe, chances are kobe will score
If nash gets a good pass to pau, chances are pau will score
And let's not forget that nash is perfectly capable of scoring by himself
The lakers become a nightmare to defend, who do you double on that team?
On defense is the place where the lakers might have a problem, but kobe is on many all defensive first teams, dwight has defensive player of the year awards, same with metta world peace, worst defenders will probably be nash and pau.
I think the biggest threat will be athletic point guards who nash can't guard effectively, but when you have dwight in the middle i wouldn't expect many easy scores to occur.
Everything is still just on paper, but I can say i will definitely be watching the lakers this season

I think they should be aiming for the 5th-8th seed in the West, keeping in mind the West is much harder than the East. I think it's a bit much to expect them to be one of the top 4 teams. Personally I think they'll end up being the 7th or 8th seed. I must say though, Ty Lawson is a stud.

I dont think its a bit much to expect the deepest team in the league to get 4th. Teams with really deep benches seem to do very well in the regular season, just look at Chicago the past two years.

D Rose is gonna be really scary once hes refreshed, but Heat for repeat!

Common okc! Get that title this year!
