I understand the hots ladder will have a new non ranked 1v1, which should make things easier, but why not go further. I feel stressed playing on the ladder, so here are a few ideas/suggestions to help players like me. Some of these have probably been discussed, so apologies in advance.
*The portait system is great, allowing people to enjoying hitting certain win counts and getting pretty profile pics. But why the hell can we not see how far away from the next portrait we are? alls we get is "Win 50 team game quick match games as terran." Wouldn't it be better to have after that (46/50) to show you are only 4 wins away and gives people something to play for.
*Also, on unlocking things. I think doing what Call of Duty does for unlocking new guns and decals is great. They set up scenarios in regular "ladder" matches where it says "Kill 25 enemies with the g18 to unlock the green camo." - So for StarCraft2, they have this, but only a few random ones ....so maybe in the "non ranked ladder" you could have fun little trophies to get like "Take 3 bases before the 8 minute mark as zerg and win, to unlock the ( _______ !) -And have like 15 or so for each race, this would break up the monotony a little. *For 1v1 Ladder on the loading screen where you can see your opponent Have a cool stat like Win/Loss vs that certain opponent and have Win/Loss ratio of the twos races. (ZvP) 63%. That way when youve played against the same guy you can see how well you have done. Maybe even a W/L for the map. AND FOR CERTAIN there rank/position... just seeing the name is pretty boring, and the "slightly favored" thing just doesnt cut it. *Lastly I think it would be badass to have a bo3 ladder. So after you play your opponent you play again until you win the bo3. And if you leave after the first game or second you lose a lot more points, to encourage the validity of the bo3ladder.
Can anyone else think of ideas to improve the expierence, or is it fine the way it is? @Emythrel Ah cool i didnt realize that! kinda hard to find though. yeah you make a good point about the look of charachters, but im talking about things to "collect" Like trophies or whatever. in hindsight doing these tasks could have been for the portraits. yeah that kinda cancels out the majority of my post ):

They already do this. If you go to achievements and click on the "Win X games with X race" it will show you what ones you've already done, what your next one is and how many wins you have towards it. On my EU account I am 1 win away from Terran 1000, checked it after my last ladder session.
As for the rest, there isn't much you could give as an unlock in SC2. Why would you want your marines to look different? Why would I want your marines to look different? If you could unlock different models for your units, blizz would have to implement an option to turn it off or else your opponents would have to look at your marines dressed differently or with a different model and maybe get pissed off about it. Basically it would be a lot of extra work for not much benefit.
In CoD et al, unlocking weapons as you rank up or new camo etc makes sense, in an RTS it simply doesn't. The units need to always look the same for everyone so that you can identify what your opponent has in his army with the slightest glance. Cosmetic upgrades are for FPS games and consoles... not for RTS. Upgrades that actually effect gameplay are not welcome in the slightest. C&C4 had a system where you had to rank up to access higher tech in your games, this made sense in single player but in multiplayer you had to either play a tonne of games in multiplayer with shite units or play the campaign to unlock them... didn't exactly lend itself to competitive play or using multiple accounts.
If you want to know if you've played someone before and how well you've done against them... install sc2gears, it does this all for you from your replays.
Most of what you suggested is either already in the game, covered by a 3rd party program like sc2gears or not welcome in a competitive game like sc2 imo

How would the system know you were taking 3 bases? unless it would detect that you have X amount of resources which indicates 3 bases... idrk how this would work out.

Well, one way to do this would be to have a region in each expansion position then check to see if the player has a base there. The check could be done so whenever another base finishes (given that no bases are mined out) it checks to see if there are three and if there are then it makes sure they are in different expansion positions.
This is a very simple example, but I don't think the problem of checking if there are three bases or not is a difficult task.

Yeah, OP I dunno. I mean you can have all your decals and portraits and (YOUR) client side only unit skins. Idgaf. But I'd rather they implement useful things like an unranked 1v1 ladder or LAN

could you even call unranked games a ladder? you wouldn't be playing for points or mmr so you wouldn't be laddering.

I'm curious how they're going to implement the "unranked ladder." Isn't that the same thing as joining a custom game? How do they match you with an opponent if there is no ranks. Just make ranks invisible? MMR and win/loss ratio is already invisible...

You will have MMR. It will be like the normal 1v1 ladder because you'll still get matched to a person of your skill level. The difference is there aren't any leagues or ranks or divisions. You play against people of your skill but you don't get ranked at all. I think it's for people who don't want to be so competitive or who have ladder anxiety and feel they care too much about their rank.

i know man. But still, its not a ladder because your mmr isn't improving. its just like playing a custom game.
dont get me wrong, i love the idea because it means that even if i take a break from StarCraft like Im doing now it means i won't have to drop too far down to get back up to the level i was at.
just dont get why its called a ladder if you are unranked. technically there is no ladder if you have no position on a leaderboard.

What he's saying is that you DO have an MMR. If I'm Diamond level on the unranked ladder, I'll play other Diamond-level players. If I'm Bronze level, I'll play other Bronze-level players. You just can't see your MMR, and because there's no point/league system, you can't really approximate it. So it is a ladder in the sense that you'll get placed against similar skilled opponents, and will face better opponents if you win a lot and worse opponents if you lose a lot.

how do you know your in mmr will place you against tougher/weaker opponents if your mmr is unaffected?

I am not really a casual player but I also agree that the call of duty unlock system feels very rewarding and satisfying, and it would be awesome if they added more unlockable things in sc2.
For example I got 1k wins portrait so there is nothing more to look forward to in terms of unlocking. Maybe add more portraits/different look of units or buildings or some kind of level indicator for your account like dota 2 or wc3. Also adding such things would keep more people playing the game in my opinion.
