So nostalgic right now. I played this game for 5 years before they killed the servers for it on Xbox Live... I want to play it again... My friend sent me the main menu theme song the other day got me feeling all nostalgic since then.
That game is my childhood and my teenage years. First video game I ever played was Wolfenstein 3D when I was 5 or 6 years old. That game had me scared as shit but I only played it with my father so It was all good. I would open the dorrs by pressing the space bar and he would do the shooting. lol. At 13 Years old when Return To Castle Wolfenstein I bought it on Xbox and it was the most amazing game I had ever played. Still my favorite to this day. I didn't like school so much, didn't have many friends so all I would in school is think about the game and how I could get better at it, bragging to my friends about my current kills to death ratio and my position on the leader boards. As soon as the school bell would ring I'd rush home to get on it and re-unite with my XBL friends and we'd play until 3AM, until 3 AM or until someone's mom would come in and shut down one of our Xbox and then we'd all leave.
Played it on and off for 4-5 years, some friends I met online back then at 12 or 13 years of age I am still friends and still talk to everyday. It was quite a unique experience back then to thanks to the internet be able to talk, hang around and beat 18 to 22 years old grown ups and listen to their life story. Make teams and clans and wage war forever on, everyone that played this game and spoke French knew of each other, the community was fairly small maybe 15-20 something regulars, the rivalry between us was intense but we'd also help out each other and stick together to beat the Americans. Despite being so young I was pretty good, Maybe the third best player from our community, probably top 15ish worldwide.
I even remember at one point my mom wanted me to stop playing or whatever so she topped paying for the yearly subscription which was around 80$ back then and one of the older guys I used to play with paid for my subscription so that I could keep on coming online and play. It was the first time a stranger had ever done something for me. It touched me.
Just listening to the themes and tunes I can picture every map, every hallway, every spot we would rush and throw grenades at. LMAO. It was home and for me it was also the beginning of something bigger, it was where I would earnest and spend my competitive spirit, the beginning of a passion for eSports.
I want to play again. Anyone knows if there still are some communities of people that plays on PC ?
RTCW on PC brings back a lot of great memories. Enemy Territory brings back even more - I spent so many hours playing that game. I wish I could find a multi player FPS that rivaled the feel of ET.
I'll always remember the voice of one of the intelligence guys in the single player that sounded like he was eating whenever he talked. "AGENT B.J. BLAZKOWICZ"
Thanks Slasher! That's what I was looking for. Is there like a thread somewhere for noobies like how to set everything up, last time I tried I couldn't log-in to any servers... So yeah is there some kind of guide somewhere or something I should know ? Thanks again.
are you trying to play RTCW or RTCW:ET? there are 2 separate tutorials on crossfire.nu to install & play them
if you're trying to connect to ET servers, try http://etkey.org/ if it's asking for a key. you can also try a 3rd party program to connect to servers, it's called "All Seeing Eye"
if you want to get into the (dead north american) competition, try www.teamwarfare.com. (STA league website seems to be down)
the present community kind of feels like the quake community, only a few people are left and they've been playing for quite a long time
Thanks for your response psiops. RTCW on Xbox was mostly 4vs4 Elimination (round bases with only one life). I prefer the small kind of maps and squad play 4vs4, I'm not a big fan of some of the huge maps I saw from ET. But I don't know what's the difference between RTCW PC and ET. Are both still being played ?
i believe RTCW is still being played, but there aren't any new servers
ET is still played since i know a couple of people that still play it. doubt there are new servers as well
RTCW is the original multiplayer game. it wasn't free. ET was supposed to be an expansion but they released it as a stand-alone free game
some differences between RTCW and ET... - maps: i don't think RTCW maps have gotten updated recently compared to ET. some people also ported RTCW maps into ET. (updated as in new maps created by the community) - weapons: different spread (accuracy) and ammo count between weapons, as well as different weapons. ET was a lot easier to aim since the spread was very reduced - different mods for both games, although both have their competition mods: OSP vs ETPro
i'm sure there are other differences but i can't really think of any right now. maybe different netcode, hitboxes, etc.
you also mention "Elimination" gameplay... RTCW and ET competition play revolved around "Stopwatch" for 99% of the competition. stopwatch is basically objective oriented... standard team size was 3 or 6, although if i remember correctly, it got changed to 3 or 5 the last time it was played at quakecon or after TWL decided to drop the game from its leagues the first time around. also big maps: not played at all in competition, only public servers
Ok, thanks for answering again. I just installed RTCW all I see right now are bot servers, omnibots and frizzbots. When I start the game click Multiplayer and all that, the servers that I'm seeing, is that all of the servers or do people mostly play on private servers or join from another source ?
All I'm seeing right now are huge bots server there's not a single 3v3 or 6v6 one or anything like that.
rtcw is pretty much dead but theres still some scrims in europe and old players playing it, some one day cups every now and then & upcoming CF Draft cup also is at signing up stage There's a vod of last 3v3 ODC which was played few days ago: decider map http://www.own3d.tv/video/558976/Malmens_Stream__RTCW_ODC__5_Final_decider_
But moving on to ET. First thing you'd want to do is to download ET from http://etui.kashu.fr/ it have most mods and maps, some may be outdated but usually you can get things from server if missing something (/cl_allowdownload 1, /cl_wwwdownload 1)
PB is not supporting ET anymore so in order to get etkey (this is the punkbuster key/guid) visit http://etkey.org/ (PB is used in publics only!)
Like Slasher mentioned crossfire.nu is the main communite site and other important site is http://www.gamestv.org . Pretty much every official ladder/league match is broadcasted live in ETTV and you can watch the match live by simply opening ET and /connect IP which you find at the match threads. You can also request any game at the archives and watch those any time you want! (need to register)
ETPro is the competitive mod and mods like jaymod, etpub, noquarter are pretty much publics only Competitive anticheat is http://tz-ac.com/ used in all officials and also in some publics Maps can be found (if needed) at http://lk2.de/maps/etmain/ (place to etmain folder)
Currently played competions are CB Nationscup (final coming soon) and a new CB Eurocup/Opencup season. 108 clans signed into 6v6 competition and 120 clans for the 3v3 competition. Also there's Battle for Berlin 2 cup running which is part of the Razer Academy eSports stuff. And ladders also ofcourse so theres still plenty of people playing. Also much of people who just play public/some mixes/watch ETTV kind of people
ETPro actually got pretty nice antilag compared to rtcw where ping was pretty important thing so even North Americans are able to play pretty decently in europe. There's pretty regular USA/CA players around and even some Chileans are playing in european competions/scrims.
Match/clan channels etc are located in IRC at Quakenet.org Pretty much everything from highskilled clanwars to lowskilled mixes are found here in these channels #3on3.et #6on6.et
After you get ET installed maybe watch some gamestv.org games to get an idea how people play and then try to find some publics to play on (sadly i dont think theres any active NA etpro pubs but i'd recommend EU etpro publics instead of those public mods anyway) and see if you like it
