A little bit of background for anyone that doesn't know me. My name is Jared Krensel and I'm a full-time SC2 progamer (zerg) from Sydney, Australia playing for Tt eSPORTS.
Back to the old conundrum, didn't train very hard today so was meant to play atleast 15 games tonight only to find myself getting ~500ping to SEA, even worse to the other servers (normally train on Korea).
Wow. F*** you you F***ing piece of sh***.
So I'll eat pizza and write a blog to amuse myself. I enjoyed Dippa's blog so much that I will copy his idea of mixing random videos and songs in to make my random ramblings more interesting.
Stallion linked that in clan aLt chat and it made me laugh:
Anyone else get goosebumps every single time they watch the scene where Simba's in the canyon and the stampede starts charging down... oh I'll just embed it too:
Anyways. Training has been fun of late. I've been making more higher level practice partners on the Korean server and hovering around top 8 masters. The main improvement has been my ZvT where I actually can read into T production and timings really well now and am dominating the matchup really well. I still think straightup rushing to lingfestor as a standard build is bad but hey if you make it work as well as Tgun does then... all I can say is it's not for me. Meanwhile my win rate going through the roof with this and I've really refined my zero scouting play DRG style with a fast ling speed for safety and good knowledge of marine-counting, drone-checking for the 1 rax expo and gas counting with overlords.
Anyone remember the Gran Turismo 2 intro video with this song? So awesome.
My ZvP has been steadily getting a little more refined. I feel my next step with it is knowing when I can just safely walk an overlord through my opponent's base in the earlygame to spot for early timings and tech. Also I need to learn to defend that 3rd on entombed valley, bloody rocks keep making me take way too much damage from zealot stalker harass. I think I just need to overproduce lings especially on that map and shut it down so i can go back to droning.
My ZvZ is a bit random. Basically I'm just not focusing on it and whenever I don't focus on it it goes to crap. My mechanics and knowledge get me by but basically I just lose to being slightly too greedy or mis-positioning a little. Nothing worrying really I still feel if I practice enough especially my fast 3rd builds I can beat any zerg player in the mid and lategame. I'm just a little sick of the matchup, if you've ever seen the bracket to a SEA tourney you wouldn't blame me.
Randomly thought of this song and it brought back memories..
Well, I'm kinda getting bored of typing now and want to check if my nets doing any better.
I guess I'll update you on my tournaments before I go.
I made it to the ro8 in Playhem today only to lose to GoldenLight (formerly SlayerS). Taldarim first map and his overlord scouted me first so he snuck some banelings and despite my solid micro once on the defensive in ling-bane wars 1 base vs 1 base, you're pretty screwed on this map because you can't get creep to your...nonexistant ramp. Eventually he kept just trading evenly until the splash killed my hatchery and I had to gg. Game 2 he did a 1-base lingbane bust which I thought I was holding fine with mass spines and queen block until I realised I forgot a 3rd queen or my own defensive banelings. Normally people try to expand before it gets that far but he just sniped all the spines within transfuse range of my ramp (Cloud kingdom so not much room). And took down my hatch. The game reset to about even but his ling harass got me into a defensive mindset and I neglected scouting and went super greedy straight teching up only to die to a roach-bane timing . I suppose the ~200ping versus him in a NA teamhouse in Seattle didn't help either, but I could have played game 2 better decision-wise so, lesson learnt.
ACL qualifiers: First one I won my group and couldn't be bothered playing Sunday so forfeited. Last one I lost my first set just after waking up to Myuu. Game 1 I was in a slight lead and then as my lair was finishing up and i went to overseer scout, I realised I misclicked and my lair never started. So I had to wait another 60s, during which time I didn't take precaution against mutas, and so was caught completely offguard and took way too many drone losses to get back in it. Game 2 we both went 1 base lingbane and crossed seperate paths of metalopalis. I made the mistake of turning back to defend and lost straightup. I then dropped a single map to both danmate and sensei so despite going 3-1 ended up behind myuu on map score and didn't go through. erk. Means I need to pwn this sunday at Cityhunter to ensure my seed into the pro bracket. I plan to win it so should be fine.
I'm in the poll for this tournament and it will be an awesome opportunity to prove myself if I get voted in. Help me out by voting please
Thanks for reading the blog guys hope it amused. My twitter and facebook and stream are in my signature so check em out if you wanna see more of my play etc.
So i'm confused as to why the internet is so bad. I hear that its terrible and that their is some sort of monopoly but don't get why the internet sucks such shit :/.

Haha actually edited it so it's clear the internet was even worse to the other servers! Ideally I'd be practicing on Korea

i'm sorry but, HAHAHAHAHAHA
But alright, we use a thin piece of copper wire to connect the the rest of the world, the average speed in Australia is about 1200KBPS and our ping is shocking, as in, i am with a company called optus and my internet is routed to you guys (westcoast exchange) then back to japan, then though Indonesia , to the SEA servers, the best ping i ever get is about 400 - 500 on the SEA servers
KR servers about 600-200 and NA about 300 again.
shit sucks.
Telstra are the guys with the monopoly and we are stuck with copper wire until the NBN (network upgrade to fiber optics). by which stage (it will take 30 years to roll out and about 50billion, don't quote me on the dollars) 100mbps will be terrible and useless.
So yeah. Its one of the reasons its been so hard for e-sports in australia to take off. for me at least there is no point in buying a pass to something like MLG or dreamhack (probably GOM though) because my internet is so bad. i mean, i would, if i had the internet to support it.
Edit: i need to get around to getting a lesson off you pig, i am so bad at the moment >.>
most aus people i know have insane bandwidth caps too. i have never been capped in my life. im sure if i used an insane amount of bandwidth it would eventually get capped, but i have never experienced it.
Hey! I'm moving to Melbourne next year for school. I've been looking into Internet options. I noticed Telstra seemed to have the fastest packages at comparable prices to the other companies.
You mentioned they are the monopoly? I'm from Canada and experience the same sort of problem with a couple companies but the monopolies here deliver the best service. How is Telstra?

Yeah, that... I can't even watch 240p streams without super lag, and I'm out of the city and up a mountain, so mine's worse than lots of others in Aus :/
Your pings are actually some of the fastest I've heard of.
Normally I get ~170ms Kr, ~200 NA, ~140 SEA.
I think the exchange is pretty close like within 500m or 1km max. I'm with Netspace, which essentially is iinet. Upgrading router in the next few days to make sure that its not causing trouble.
But basically it's a matter of the internet here being prone to bouts of massive lag and retardation that drives me up the wall! Like many companies I've been with in the past would say their plan has no cap, and conveniently cut your bandwidth down to 1/2 once you hit a certain data point, and then in 1/2 again when you reach another data point etc etc...
Not to mention even on a good day I never get more then 750kbps/upload streaming in high res is out of the question unless I want to pay double what I am now with Internode...

You are close enough to the exchange that it shouldn't be an issue. I'm not that familiar with Netspace, so it's hard to comment on the latency issues. I use iiNet in the inner city currently without any issues. Previously I have used Internode, but their connection to South Korea is very bad (SEA and NA were fine) so I had to change to iiNet.
Regarding upload, no one in Australia has good upload speeds, so that is to be expected.
If you are a professional player and it's impacting your practice I would just change ISPs, although without knowing exactly where the problem(s) lie it cannot be guaranteed that it will fix the latency.

Thanks!!
It's a monopoly in that all the other companies, including Optus, are basically reselling Telstra lines.
I've had three internet connections set up in the last year (moved 8 times, wtf), and every time I've gone back to research, I ended up at Internode, which seemed to have good speeds and good service, though their quota packages are not as great as they used to be. Optus has a promising naked DSL plan iirc, but it's only available on a 24 month contract and the cancellation fee is beastly.
If you end up going with mobile internet, for whatever reason, be prepared to have crap reception in major areas, though for what it's worth, I've spent a considerable amount of time playing SC2 tethered to my mobile phone.
Yeah, Australia is a backward country in terms of internet.
I'm with the iinet ISP (one of the better ones as well) and we have download quotas. If we exceed these quotas our internet gets throttled to an unusable speed.
The quota is 50GB/50GB, peak/off-peak usage respectively for AUD70 per month, where off-peak is defined as between 2am - 8am (not useful but at least I can schedule downloads during that time). iinet has recently upgraded where the quota is 100GB for the month (i.e. no more peak/off-peak) but uploads and downloads are counted towards the quota.
Fortunately for me, my mum doesn't use much internet, so I can piggyback using her account. I live by myself, but I'm able to use her account in my own house (discovered this by accident). Recently (today), I've upgraded her 50GB/50GB plan to the 200GB one! No more quota troubles for me for a long time.
However, our latency is terrible - basically, sometimes it can be difficult to watch streams. For instance, I can watch GSL HQ most of the time but sometimes the latency is bad and need to downgrade to SQ.
Wow, feeling sorry for all you aussies I cant imagine having crappy internet. I get pissed off whenever a video lags or buffers, it would be terrible to have this happen all the time Hang in there, I guess the technology just isnt there yet
