So I’ve been a little sick for the past week. And by a little sick, I mean that I couldn’t laugh without coughing up my lungs. Of course I chose to convalesce by watching IEM and other streams. I also managed to get my sister sick and she knew that I would be half watching whatever she put on TV and half watching “nerd fest”, as she so aptly calls it.
Now my sister knows nothing about StarCraft2 but when her friends asked what I was doing in Providence or will be doing in Columbus, instead of saying I was watching StarCraft2, it became nerd fest. Regardless, she knew that I was doing something related to my hobby. I’ve seen other articles that ask, “How to introduce the uninitiated person to StarCraft2?” A good example is the BarCraft handout thread where SC2 fans bring people to the bar and then try to explain our beautiful game to people who’ve never seen it.
When I hang out with my close friends, even if they don’t play SC2, we’ll often watch an MLG or SPL. I’ve gotten various people to watch a Flash game or watch a SeleCT game with me. So I guess I’d like to let all of you TLers in on my secret:how to get the non-nerds in your life into or involved with your hobby obsession.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll always have a stream and TL open. That seems like a standard thing that all TL users do. What’s this mean? Obviously it’s a huge part of your life, so don’t hide it. Embrace it as your hobby and let everyone know that’s what you’re doing. My friend once told me, “You’re always watching that shit”. Yeah, I know buddy. It’s sooo good. There’s totally a reason. It’s all about enthusiasm. Have you ever met that guy where all he talks about is fixing up his car? Car guy/gal? What’s stopping you from being the StarCraft 2 guy/gal?
Ever meet a sports “fan” that just likes LeBron James because of last night’s dunk? Or loves the Yankees because they have a ton of pennants? Don’t be that guy, read up and be educated. No one likes a front runner and no one likes lukewarm enthusiasm. If you want to really involve people, know your shit. Drop those knowledge bombs. I personally think I have a minor in Liquipedia surfing; I study it like it’s my job.
Don’t be shy about inviting people to do SC2 related things. I got one friend to play Protoss and we kept trying to teach her how to rush colossus. I have another friend who tries to catch Idra’s and White-Ra’s streams all the time. If your friend is a Bronze level Protoss, show them some Protoss streams. If you’re hanging with a lady friend, show her some laser Toss. Everyone likes lasers, They’re so pretty. Another friend told me she likes Protoss because they seem the prettiest and hates Zerg because they’re all disgusting and buggy. You have to play to what people like and are into. If they are into movies, show them tournament story lines. Or show them the plethora of new documentaries coming out. I believe that the upcoming TL one and StarNation are going to be the best for the uninitiated. If they like cute boys, show them some of the Korean players. If they like nukes, show them Terran. If they like shit talk, show them MC. StarCraft 2 has so much to offer.
So this weekend we have Lone Star Clash and NASTL finals. Next weekend is MLG Columbus. Maybe it’s time to show a tournament and TL to some friends. Involve some new people in your hobby. We make new fans. Then we defense them. ^_^

You cant talk about popping your sisters cherry and expect people to not reach weird mental conclusions.

hahahahahahahahaha. Popping cherries then sister win. Maybe an inner cry for help at past events? Just kidding.
Yeah my friend always asks me what idra is doing because I told him that idra is the ultimate macro zerg but he always rages. SO yeah I totes helped bring people to the scene.
However, I was super pumped to watch GSL finals so I hooked my comp up to the upstairs TV and was all pumped to watch it...and my dad watched it with me! It was impressive, not that he expressed too much interest besides "how are there that many people there" and "they talk about people playing games so enthusiastically." But he does ask me about GSL every once in a while.

The first comment always finds a way to make the thread interesting...
I don't want to think about popping cherries when I consider all of the people I've shown SC2 to. I don't like the mental images...my mental eyes are on fire now.

lol i read the title and then right away you talk about your sis.... lol

Chicks dig protoss man. It's kind of ironic that her favorite unit is the infamous void ray (and probes are cute too.). She's super casual, and she actually has a lot of fun playing team games with us when we do some fun builds and make the games more even. People who don't really play sort of just macro all game, so at the 30:00 when we've killed all the resources she has the deathball to sorta carry the rest of the game. haha.
I think 4 gate is a really great way to introduce people to enjoying the game as well. esp with the sort of "sneaky" aspect of it if you choose to hide gateways somewhere, but I think it's really exciting for new players to do things like put a proxie pylon by the other guys base and have that sort of "oh no i hope he won't find out!" thing. That and being on skype and making jokes (:

And admitting to it really just put a damper on the whole thread.

I'm not sure why you guys want it to be so true but I mean...I can't stop what goes on in people's heads. So I hope you guys have fun with your sick fantasies haha. Especially you Bibbit ^_^
