So I’ve alluded to this a little in the past but I think it might be time for me to go public: I am a rabid metalhead. I instantly identified HasuObs’ “theme song” from the NASL Season 2 Finals as an Amon Amarth song. I love iNcontroL because he’s an amazing character and he streams the same music that I listen to. I took great pride in spotting all the metalheads at MLG Providence.
I had a realization when I saw Revocation/Children of Bodom in concert in Rochester NY. As David Davidson (lead guitarist and singer of Revocation) was doing his guitar and mic check, he teased a few Metallica and Van Halen riffs. Some of the older guys and I cheered. I love that kind of shit. But most of the high school kids had no idea what was going on. And then it clicked…
That’s how I think Brood War fans see their beloved game.
Follow me here, all right? Imagine that in like 2010, Brood War was still the big boy. It has sick commentators, a super established scene, and always shows incredible games. You might even see someone like Jaedong or Flash pull off a near-perfect game.
Then in what seems like one fell-swoop, the StarCraft 2 Beta comes out and seems to sweep aside all things Brood War. And with the introduction of Wings of Liberty, it seems like Brood War has been pushed more and more aside. More than a decade of history, games, and fandom seems to have evaporated. And a lot StarCraft 2 crowd doesn’t seem interested in leveling up their history.
Growing up I listened to Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Slayer. To me, the old thrash metal bands and old school metal bands are the epitome of everything that is great in metal music. There is so much history to learn and appreciate. I have friends and have met people who got into it later and something gets lost in translation. Most of my friends dislike Slayer and are super picky about Megadeth songs and albums. I don’t get it, they’re the shit. Why doesn’t everyone love them like I do?
It’s something I grew up with.
Just like how tons of fans grew up with Brood War. Maybe it was in the literal sense of a childhood growing up. Or maybe it was growing up into eSports; an introduction into the scene we all love. Regardless, it’s so hard to tell someone that something they’ve loved for a decade is now antiquated. I mean think about it. The Rolling Stones are about to croak at any moment but if they were to announce a tour, it would be sold out in 3 minutes. Why? Things that people grow up with are ingrained in them. Putting aside the actual debate of which game is better, the diehard old school Brood War fans will always side with Brood War. Period. There’s nothing that you can debate. And trust me, they are diehard. Look at the top of TeamLiquid!
The same thing can be said about metal fans. Try telling me Iron Maiden isn’t the greatest thing ever put into my eardrums. Or that Metallica’s solos are overrated. I don’t even want to entertain any thoughts otherwise.
To me, it now makes perfect sense. So stop the debates and watch some of the videos shown in the farewell post to MBCGame. Learn some of your history and then form an opinion. Oh, and up the irons! \m/
Its not nostalgia at all, and it wasn't brushed aside at all, sc2 doesn't even touch bw with a 10 foot pole in korea. A lot of people (including me) only started playing BW after playing sc2 for a long time.
We play it because its much more fun, its simple really.
actually i think this is the perfect commparison didnt really see it like this before but if someone was to come up to me and start playing some nu metal shit like slipknot id probably be as pissed as a bw fan getting harrased by sc2 fans... i actually get why this whole bw vs sc2 fight now ^^ thanks.
So this is basically a repackaging of the "nostalgia argument", am I correct? I can only repeat what has already been said in countless threads and and has been said in this thread: Many people discovered BW when SC2 was in beta, not long ago. The argument loses its basis if you take those cases into account. Hell, even writing staff came to BW in 2010! Those are certainly not 10 years of BW experience. Also please don't get me started about metal history. Iron Maiden are certainly not the greatest thing ever. Slayer is ten times better (at least until Seasons...).
...you are totally forgetting that a LOT of old bw vods/videos are full with metal as well. Actually that's what I first thought about it when I saw the thread title. =D
I have far more nostalgia for WC2 than for Brood War. WC2 was pretty much the only non-educational game I had, from about age 7 to 11, and I've probably played more hours of WC2 than any other game.
However, I wouldn't ever say that WC2 is a more deserving e-sport than SC2. I'd hardly even played Brood War at all until 2008. When most of SC2's matchups have moved away from the current ball vs ball nonsense (SC2 TvZ is a good example of what I hope for) I will happily admit that SC2 is as good as BW.

Was watching Stork vs Light last night. Stork's theme song is Motorhead's The Game. Pretty cool ^_^
@surfinbird1 There's no argument man, I'm just sharing how I think BW fans feel. This is how I'm relating to it. In another note I can't wait to see Slayer on the Rockstar Mayhem tour this summer.
@r.Evo I'm a BW noob, just starting to get into it. Haven't seen that many old VODs =X

A lot of SCII fans have a hard time warping their heads around this, but the people who still watch broodwar don't do it out of nostalgia, but do it because we think it is a legitimately better game. Where your metaphor breaks down is that while the rolling stones are getting old and losing the mechanical ability to play like they used to, the BW games being played now are the highest level we have ever seen.
