I was half kidding and super curious. I can listen to Artosis tell me all day about how much harder Brood War is or I can find out for myself. And of course, I had to find out. So first, I pick my Brood War race: Protoss. I LOVED Protoss as a kid. Dragoons and Reavers were so cool to me. The whole robot, mechanical thing drew me in. And like I said before, Fallen played Protoss on iCCup and was ranked at B+. Keep that in mind.
My first match was a PvZ on Electric Circuit, I believe. I spawned at 2 o’clock and my enemy spawned at 5 o’clock. Now at this point, Fallen is sitting behind me attempting to coach me. So since I loved watching Sair/DT in Brood War, I demanded I be taught this build. And here is where I ran into my first few problems.
I can’t even execute the probe split right because the layout of the Nexus in the main is so much different from StarCraft 2. My probes kind of clump up and immediately I’m derided for my sick probe split. Next issue with the damn probes is that I have to individually make them mine….Of course I didn’t really know this so my probes just sat and stared at the pretty blue minerals until Fallen said something.
After my initial speedbumps, I get my core and stargate and citadel up. And I start to move my units out at something like the 9 minute mark. I was determined that my good buddy corsair #1 was going to kill tons of overlords. I actually managed to snipe a good amount of overlords with corsair #1 and his 2 buddies before realizing that something was seriously wrong. I couldn’t macro. I had to individually click on all my production to make them build?? No wonder Protoss bases in the SPL looked impeccable. That gridwork of gateways makes it easy…
So since I’m playing a D- game, and I’m putting all the pressure on, my enemy is cowed. As I start to build my army o’ doom, I realize yet another issue. I can’t make my damn dragoons move out in a nice smooth group.
Instead of this:
Stork showing me how it’s done….Show off.
I get this:

My damn dragoons did NOT like ramps...Or moving in straight lines.
My damn dragoons won’t even move down my ramp smoothly. I have to wrestle these lost souls so much just to make them walk. I slowly push 12 damn units at a time until Fallen suggests I a-move on the mini map. Highlight a group and just move them 12 at a time. Except now I. Can’t. Get. A. Solid. Push. Going. Instead of getting a nice big attack on my enemy’s third, I have a dragoon/zealot/dark templar hit squads. I have like 18 supply of my 60 total attacking. So I’m scared.
I take out his third somehow and I realize that I finally know what to do. I’m pushing his natural and ending it now! Again, I send my damn hit squads in. At this point I look like Hansel and Gretel, just a damn trail of units all over the center as I frantically try to move my army.
I’m ROASTING this nerd’s natural and then…GG!!
And then Fallen and I look at each other and just laugh uncontrollably. I’ll never forget what he said next: “I can’t believe you won….but I don’t even know where to start. There was so much wrong with that.”
So guys, I did it. It wasn’t pretty. It was hard as fuck. But it was so much fun. I then played 4 more iCCup games and proceeded to be reminded that they need to open up an E rank and put me there. Or maybe I’ll stick to leveling up my Terran in StarCraft2.
