You can man. Always have an emergency fund set up. I keep 500 dollars hidden in my home, and another 500 in my savings that I've cut the account cards up to. I know it seems like a lot, especially when you're poor but I started by putting the pennies I'd find while walking up and down streets trying to find a job inside a can and never touching it. Seriously, I know it sounds so dumb and misunderstanding but just budget. Budgeting and following the budget are the hardest things to master but when you do, you will never have issues with money barring *major* emergencies for a long time.

They don't have to buy shampoo, though. Thanks for all the awesome suggestions anyone, my favourite being the chocolate flavoured rice and rice in general.

I would honestly try to sneak in to someone's house (invited, of course) and make a remark about how you're hungry, usually does the job. Rice though, it's always good. :D

Pasta and canned tomatoes also works well if you can afford it.

I made a chilli con carne for 10 bucks that fed 4 people for 3 days.

Due to a bureaucratic error, I didn't get any money this month and thus get twice the amount next month. I'm a full time student, so I'm pretty much government-funded and can't just ask a boss for an advance. This would work out decently, if it weren't for the fact that I had to get my car to the shop and I just recently invested all other spare money. I could easily ask a friend or my parents or my brother for a little loan, but I don't like stuff like that and I found the experience to live off of 50 bucks for a month pretty cool. Take 20 bucks away from that for toothpaste, shampoo and shower gel, and I ended up with a buck a day for food. Now the fridge is empty and so are tummy and wallet. So what do I best invest my last 3 bucks in? Things I'm sick of: - pasta - noodles - potatoes! Any cheap recipes? I'm surprised how cheap baking can be, so I'm very open towards that Show nested quote + On October 26 2011 04:30 meowmeow- wrote: It might help to say that electricity is free for me, so I can basically bake the shit out of everything. If you were a feral cat you wouldn't have this problem. I really cannot think of anything you can get for 3 bucks that isn't pasta based. I would honestly dress like a homeless guy (as someone I once knew did for a high school project) and sit at a corner of a busy business section or donut shop. You would make more than enough for a proper meal. O: P.S. The guy squandered in several areas and close to $100 at one of them.

Also they get you protein which rice/potatoes/whatever don't get you. My favourite though is pancakes - an egg, some flour and milk, and you have a decent meal (and baking powder, soda, salt, and vegetable oil if you're feeling fancy). Although syrup can be expensive. Lemon juice/sugar isn't, and is a nice topping. Unfortunately that usually requires a somewhat larger initial investment keeping your cupboards stocked but a bag of flour will last you forever.

You can easily make bean and cheese burritos with pork and or rice in there. Also, buy frozen peas and corn, they are usually pretty cheap as well. Find All the grocery store coupons in your area and online. Sign up for A bunch of fast food restraunts emailing lists and they often have free giveaways. Ive gotten some from quiznos, jack in the box, carls jr, etc. Also, you can go to grocery stores and just eat a banana as you walk around the store and pretend to shop then leave if you really need it. Homeless shelters and churches can usually hook up a hot meal or a box of take home stuff.

I have survived for a week making various types of baked potatoes (cheese/sour cream/cream cheese, etc), but flavoring costs $. I suppose you can go to a fast food restaurant and help yourself to some ketchup. Rice + ketchup borrowed from McDonalds? I enjoyed japanese rice seasoning (http://sybarite.us/puertorico/2008/06/18/furikake-funky-rice-toppings/) and have had meals of only rice, that stuff, and steamed vegatables.

If you really wanna survive, take a shower once a day only or once every 2 days if your desparate. You can't spend money on luxuries like that if it's better spent in food. Other than that, buy low cost foods like everyone else said. There was a guide once for $1 a meal eating. Something along the lines of making a $10 soup that lasts around 2 weeks, while also having another low cost item etc a slice of bread with some spread or grated cheese.
