Hey guys,

envision a situation in which you have 3 bucks to spend to survive 6 days.

Due to a bureaucratic error, I didn't get any money this month and thus get twice the amount next month. I'm a full time student, so I'm pretty much government-funded and can't just ask a boss for an advance.

This would work out decently, if it weren't for the fact that I had to get my car to the shop and I just recently invested all other spare money.

I could easily ask a friend or my parents or my brother for a little loan, but I don't like stuff like that and I found the experience to live off of 50 bucks for a month pretty cool. Take 20 bucks away from that for toothpaste, shampoo and shower gel, and I ended up with a buck a day for food.

Now the fridge is empty and so are tummy and wallet.

So what do I best invest my last 3 bucks in?

Things I'm sick of:

- pasta
- noodles
- potatoes!

Any cheap recipes? I'm surprised how cheap baking can be, so I'm very open towards that

well first off you gotta stop spending money on all of your womens' cab fares.
i'd also like to note that this is a brag post. you think you are special because you have 3 dollars right now?? and using words like "invest" instead of spending the 3 dollars?? why don't you just call all of us peasants!

joking aside, I'd say pasta/noodles or similar things are as cost effective as you are going to get, and with 3 dollars to your name, you can't really afford to be too picky. I think you really ought to ask a friend to spot you a couple of bucks til you get paid. not worth it to starve yourself while you wait for the government to sort out an error

That would be cheating, I want to live up to the challenge

There is no way I'm going to be hungry, I just want to find a way around the noodles

Don't blame an error on your poor budgeting. An emergency on your part is constituted by yourself alone. Plan for others around yourself.

That being said...

1) Pasta/Noodles may be old to you, but it's the cheapest thing to eat. If you're tired of that though, along with potatoes this is what I lived off for nearly 3 years working freelance writing and misc. oddjobs (read : poooooooooooooooor) I would like to point out, there are tons of different ways to cook potatoes and milk, butter and potatoes are an incredibly efficient food. There's a reason an entire country was able to at least survive off them. (not ideal, but hey?)

-Rice ($1)
-Beans ( $1)
-Chicken/Pork (varies, usually the cheapest of the meats. Look for sales!)
-Tomatoes (2/$1)
-Onions (3/$1)
-Cheese (by the block) ($2.50)
-Peppers (3/$1)
-Frozen vegetables ($2)
-Oat meal ( $2)
-Frozen fruit for said oatmeal ($2)
-Eggs ($1)

There you go. There's at least 10 dishes you can make from this batch of cheaply purchased items. Most of them can be baked. Now I added in coffee and some minor additions here and there (weed lol) but the fact is, this is a very liveable staple diet. Most of the recipes are just throw shit in skillet/pan/etc and let it go to town but if you want an actual list just google around for mexican recipes or Stuffed Bell Peppers.

2) How are you spending 20 bucks on those things?
Toothpaste -2 bucks max, 5 if you're being classy
Shampoo - 2 bucks
Conditioner - 2 bucks
Shower Gel? (Why not soap?) - 2 bucks.

The mystery of life is not a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. **Hang in there STX fans!! Kal Hwaiting!**

Yeah, my budgeting was poor, but I couldn't anticipate my car breaking down and not getting paid in the same week. Funnily enough, I brought the most money I ever had to the bank just a day before my car broke down, and I can't access said money for the next 2 years.

3 bottles of head and shoulders, 12 bucks combined
2 tubes of tooth paste, 6 bucks
1 container of shower gel (hate soap), 2 bucks.

I'd rather not eat for a day or two than live w/o coffee.

I shower everyday and 1 bottle of shampoo or soap last me like 2-3 months...
Toothpaste lasts even longer usually.

You must use way too much. Fixed your budget right there.

Maybe toothpaste comes in smaller tubes in America, but I brush my teeth thrice a day and I go through them extremely fast.

I remember a similar situation when I was a student. (having 10 Euros for 1 week) At the last day I just had some toast, a bit of cheese and 2 tomatos. preheat your oven, put the cheese on the toast, slice the tomatos in little pieces and put some on every toast. now pepper/basilikum whatever you like/can find on top and all into the oven. gg :>

Doesn't explain the use of 3 bottles of shampoo in one month. I've been using the same one for around 3 months and I'd say I've used 2/3 of it

Well, the same must apply to shampoo.

The bottles are pretty small, 300 ml don't last very long.

Lets see cup of noodles cost about 25c if i remember the packages of ramen cost like 12c so if you can cook the noodles you can double the amount of noodles so with simple math you can have roughly 10-11 cups of noodles or about 20 packages of ramen noodles.

I dont care if your sick of noodles this is SURVIVAL MAN. Also stealing saltine crackers is a good source of free food if you have a water fountain if not i would advise against it.

As a last means go eat out with friends only order water and basically scavenge food off them, the more drunk they are the more willing they are to give away food.

Plays against every MU with nexus first.

I'd say potatoes are the way to go. Where I live you can get 10 pounds for roughly less than $3? And you'll be needing those 10 pounds. Unless you can find ramen on sale at 12 packs for a dollar this is probably the way to go without becoming too hungry. If you have a bit of spare butter you can make mashed potatoes. If not, bake or boil them and eat with some salt. Poking a few holes in them then microwaving them about 10 minutes, rotating every 3-4 minutes, also works.
