Hi there and, taking inspiration from watching pros play, tried to basically move every hotkey up one so I have 1-3 for army. Basically the main reason for this is to make it easier for me to control my ghosts, vikings and bio in TvP without having to box them. The main thing is that while trying to learn my hotkey setup its really really hard, and I always un hotkey my cc's while attempting to hotkey factories and it just doesnt feel right per say. It also feels wierd with the cc being on 6 rather than 5, and its really messed up my scv production as I always mess up when im trying to manage barracks factories and ccs. Also 1-3 for army makes it so I have to reach across my keyboard to use 7 and its really hard to produce everything without just getting confused
. Hopefully I am right in saying that I just need to keep playing and I will get used to it, or is it different for some people and I should just stick with trying to box my units in TvP and keep using my old setup?
thanks for reading

Well you just need to keep practicing, but i dont get why you put your CC on 6. With your CC you're gonna be using "s" a lot, so might as well have it as close to s as possible, i have it on 3.
But unless you have freakishly short fingers you can get away with pretty much any hot key setup from 1-6. When you reach 7 or 8 i feel like you have to move your hand, at least i have to.
I could never change my setup though. I know that i'd use it for one day and then just go back to my old one because it's easier, so GL!

what are you using 4-5 for? it's standard to put your CC on something closer to s. a good setup would be 1-3 army, 4 cc, 5 production.
i set mine up by order of frequency. 1 for army (being the most frequently used), 4 for nexus (makin dem probez), and 5 for production.

it doesnt matter where u have ur hotkeys, to get used to it u have to practice practice practice. u could have a mix like 1 marines 2 cc 3 ghost 4 production 5 vikings etc... if u practice enough and get used to it, u will be able to play without missclicking. play some hours against AI and try to spam ur keys the wohle game long, do this for a couple of days and u should be fine. ( thats at least what i did when i hard changed my hotkeys )

Moving your hand away from the resting position is not a bad thing. Don't feel compelled to have every possible hand movement restricted around your rest position.
Of course you don't want to make awkward movements for common things, but for example if you have trouble clicking control+7, there's nothing wrong with using thumb on the right-hand control for that, as you do that only a few times per game.
If the rightmost key you are using is 7, I'd suggest you bind it to your ccs. That way you'll get used very quickly to it, and you get trained to use 6 for free.

This is not how it works. "2s" is harder than "7s", because with the latter you only need to reach for 7; Your ring finger is already on s.

I have pretty short fingers, so personally I would use only hotkeys 1-7. I'm a zerg but this works out pretty good.
As a terran, i think CC on 3 is pretty awkward as well. I would personally put CCs on 4-7 any of those. 3 is an awkward backwards bend of the middle finger past the ring finger (assuming you press s with your ring finger and the hotkey with your middle or index finger).
Also, I think the key to good multitasking is fluid hotkeys. I don't play that much SC2, but if you look at replays of BW progamers, they are constantly, CONSTANTLY hotkeying and re-hotkeying. This eliminates a lot of issues, and allows them to use just 1-3 for UNITS, the rest for buildings (until late game when there may be potentially too many units).
So the point is to be flexible with everything!
I would suggest
1-3 Units, 4-7 CCs. Then as the game progresses 1-3 units, 4-6 production facilities

Pick something, play ~15 games with it.
Here are my Terran hotkeys in case you're interested. 1 - CC 2 to 4 - army 5 to 7 - production

I had the exact same problem ... ok a slightly different problem but similar none the less. i needed frankly atleast 1 more hot key. what i did ... simple soloution.
I re-bound the "grave accent" key (on us keyboards its the tilde) essentially the key next to the 1 key ... `
I rebound it so it would end up being hotkey 0 so now i tend to use that key for an active observer/mothership ... while i use 1 for main army (with sentrys) 2 for ht's storm's/feedback and 3 for my phoenix's(or drops depending matchup). but it let me keep the same bindings that im used to without having to get used to changing all my keys i jsut have to get used to 1 key
So now my games look like this ... ` obs 1 army 2 ht's 3 phoenix 4 nexus 5 gates (i know what your thinking) 6 robo 7 stargate 8 anything that can upgrade (mainly forges)

O_O never thought of that.
I play toss, so 4e is my standard.

I switched S to MULE and E to SCV. Gone are the days of stopping all my SCVs on accident. This way I hit 1e for my SCVS. I also have 2 for Barracks and 3 for Fac/Ports. This lets me put my army on 456, and it's very easy to hit 4a5a6a, instead of 1a2a3a. I recommend this setup. I also suggest learning to FKey your main, nat, third, and rally point.
As Toss I have basically the same setup, except due to the lack of barracks I use 3 as my Observer, and instead of fkey on a rally point I just click on the minimap near the closest pylon.

I play grid, so I'm used to 4q for SCV or like 5q for marine. Also since my attack is T it's relatively easy to hit 1t2t3t rather than 1a2a3a, so Cecil's recommendation makes a ton of sense. :D
I personally do this for my hotkey setup: 1 - army 2 - army 3 - army 4 - all CCs 5 - all production, and I TAB through 6 - misc (nuke silos, upgrades)
And I use the F screen keys over my bases. This way I don't have to reach past 6 on the keyboard ever.
