[Interview] GomTV 2 MSL Champion

혁명이란 말은 역사를 바꾼다는 뜻을 담고 있다. 그동안 프로토스가 주연으로 활약하지 못했던 MSL의 역사를 김택용이 갈아 치웠다. MSL에 참가한 프로토스 사상 처음으로 2회 연속 결승 진출을 달성한 데 이어 2회 연속 우승까지도 개척함으로써 ‘혁명가’의 이름을 만방에 알렸다. MSL의 역사를 다시 쓰면서 ‘혁명가’의 입지를 탄탄하게 다진 김택용과 우승 인터뷰를 나눴다.

The word revolution contains the meaning that it changes history. The history that the Protoss has not been able to play the leading role in the MSL has been swapped out by Kim Taek-Yong (Bisu[Shield]). For the first time, a Protoss participating in the MSL has achieved 2 consecutive finals followed by 2 consecutive wins thus spreading the name ‘revolutionist’. We interviewed Kim Taek-Yong, who rewrote the history of MSL and solidified his position as ‘revolutionist’.


-MSL 2회 연속 우승을 차지했다. 소감은.
▶멀게만 느껴졋던 32강이었는데 한 경기씩 올라가다 보니 우승이라는 자리까지 다시 올랐다. 감격스럽고, 벅차다. 2회 우승의 부담이 컸지만 털어내고 나니 홀가분하다.

-You won MSL 2 consecutive times. Your feelings.
▶The round of 32 felt so far away but as I went up one game at a time, I rose to the position of winner. It’s gratifying and I’m overflowing with emotion. The burden of 2 wins was great but after I shook it off, I feel free.


-지난 대회 우승 때와 지금의 감정을 비교해 본다면.
▶그 때는 메이저 대회에 두 번째 오르는 신인이다 보니까 내가 상대하는 선수들마다 어려웠다. 이번 시즌은 조금 쉽게 올라 온 것 같다. 그렇지만 이번 결승전은 매우 힘들었다.

-If you compare your emotion to that of your last win.
▶That time, I was a rookie playing his second major tournament so every player I faced was difficult. It feels like I advanced a little more easily. However, this finals was very difficult.


-지금 가장 생각나는 사람은 누구인가.
▶ 연습 도와준 선수들이 생각난다. MBC게임 히어로 동료들 모두에게 고맙고, 박정석, 장주현, 박세정, 신상호 등 다른 팀 선수들에게도 감사를 드린다. 박용운 코치가 내 연습을 봐주느라 고민 많았다. 전략을 만드는 것은 물론, 숙소에 넘쳐나는 모기를 퇴치해주는 등 컨디션 유지에 도와줬다(웃음). 여러 사람들이 함께 도와줬기 때문에 만들어낸 우승이라 생각한다.

-Who are the people on your mind right now.
▶I remember the players who helped me practice. I’m thankful my fellow MBC Game Hero teammates, Park Jung-Suck ([Oops]Reach), Jang Joo-Hyun ([Oops]Shield), Park Sae-Jung (Sea.Pure), Sin Sang-Ho (SangHo[Shield]), as well as other team members. Park Yong-Eun coach had a lot of trouble helping my practice sessions. Creating strategies is a given, and he helped me maintain my condition by exterminating the mosquitoes (laugh). I think that this win was made by the numerous people who helped me.


-새 역사를 작성했다는 사실을 아는가.
▶알고 있다. 최초이고, 최연소 2회 우승을 차지한 프로토스다. 정말 기쁘고 좋다. 어리다 보니까 앞으로 이뤄갈 수 있는 기록도 많기 때문에 MSL 징크스인 3회 우승에 최연소로 도전하고 싶고, 4회 우승까지도 달성하고 싶다.

-Do you know that you made new history.
▶I know. I’m the first and the youngest Protoss to win 2 times. I’m very happy and well. Since I’m young, I have many records to make so I want to try to break the MSL jinx -- 3 wins as the youngest player and I also want my 4th win.


-3대2로 간신히 승리했다. 가장 어려웠던 세트는.
▶3, 4세트가 정말 어려웠다. 1, 2세트는 빌드 오더를 모두 준비해왔지만 3, 4세트는 연습이 부실했다. 3세트 때 즉흥적으로 대응했지만 잘 통했다. 그 덕분에 5세트까지 이끌어 갈 수 있었다.

-You barely won with 3-2. What was the hardest set.
▶Sets 3, 4 were really hard. I had prepared a build order for sets 1, 2 but for sets 3, 4 I lacked practice. In the 3rd set I reacted on the spot but it worked well. Thanks to that, I was able to take the game to the 5th set.


-이번 시즌 운으로 올라왔다는 이야기가 많다.
▶ 송병구 선수가 드라군의 사거리 업그레이드를 하지 못했다는 이야기를 경기 끝나고 들었다. 결승전까지도 운이 많이 따랐다. 전투를 펼치면서도 계속 패했기 때문에 업그레이드를 하지 않았다는 것을 몰랐다. 나에게는 운이었지만 운도 실력이라 생각한다. 나와는 상관이 없는 상대의 실수였다. 나는 최선을 다했다.

-There is a lot of stories that say you advanced by luck this season.
▶I heard that player Song Bung-Gu (stork) could not do Dragoon’s range upgrade after the game finished. There was a lot of luck in the finals as well. I lost in all the skirmishes so I wasn’t aware that the upgrade wasn’t done. For me, it was luck but I think that luck is also a skill. It was an opponent’s mistake that had nothing to do with me. I tried my best.


-송병구는 올 시즌 프로리그에서도 좋은 성적을 거두는 등 강력한 경쟁자였다. 실제로 상대해보니 어땠나.
▶안정적인 선수라고 생각했지만 전략적인 움직임도 많이 보여줬다. 예상을 벗어난 양상의 경기가 많았다. 송병구 선수의 변신에 당황했던 것이 사실이다. 마지막 5세트 때에는 서로 안전한 전략을 사용했는데 내가 승리했다.

-Song Bung-Gu has done well in this pro league season, etc. so he was a strong competitor. How was it actually facing him.
▶I thought that he was a solid player but he showed a lot of strategical movements. There were many games that went outside my prediction. It’s true that I was bewildered by play Song Byung-Gu’s transformation. In the last and 5th set, we both used a safe strategy and I won.


-속으로 생각한 스코어는.
▶3대2는 생각한 적이 없다. 3대0으로 일찍 끝내고 돌아가자고 생각했을 뿐이었다. 1세트에서 쉽게 끝났기 때문에 5세트를 가더라도 내가 유리하다고 생각했다.

-What did you think the final score would be.
▶I never thought 3-2. I only thought 3-0 so I could finish early and go back. Set 1 ended easily so even if it went to set 5, I thought I had the advantage.


-2, 4세트가 전략적인 맵이었다.
▶내가 보기에는 전략적인 맵은 하나도 없었다. 운영을 중심으로 연습을 했는데 결승 현장에서 빌드 오더를 바꾸고 싶은 생각이 들었고, 실제로도 변화를 줬다. 3세트 같은 경우에는 내가 전략을 수정함으로써 승리했다.

-Sets 2, 4 were strategical maps.
▶From what I can see, there was not even one strategical map. I practiced with a focus on game management but at the finals, I wanted to change the build order, and I did so. In the case of set 3, I switched my strategy for the win.


-송병구에게 하고 싶은 이야기는.
▶지난 시즌 강 민과의 4강 때 연습 상대가 송병구였다. 이후 프로리그 박영민과의 경기를 준비할 때까지 서로 도와줬다. 프로토스의 시대를 같이 이끌어 갈 동반자라고 생각한다.

-What do you want to say to Song Byung-Gu
▶Last season, my practice partner for the game against Kang Min (Nal_rA) was stork. Later, until we were preparing for the game against Park Young-Min (much[gm]), we helped each other. I think he is a companion that will lead the age of the Protoss together.


-오늘 경기에 대한 개인적인 평가는.
▶만족스럽다. 연습량도 많았고, 결과도 좋았다. 4세트 몬티홀에서 많이 보여주지 못해 아쉽다.

-What is your personal review on today’s game.
▶I’m satisfied. There was enough practice, and the result was good. I’m disappointed that I could not show much on set 4’s Monty Hall.


-앞으로의 목표나 각오는.
▶팬들이 가장 좋아하는 게이머가 되고 싶다. 팬을 위해 색다른 플레이를 보여주고 싶고, 나를 사랑하도록 만들고 싶다. 가끔은 재미없는 경기도 나오겠지만 최대한 색깔 있는 경기를 선보이겠다.

-Your future goals or resolutions.
▶I want to become a gamer that fans like the most. I want to show unique plays for fans, and I want to make them love me. Sometimes there will be boring games but I will show games that are as colourful as possible.


-올 시즌 스카우트를 사용하면서 센세이션을 불러 일으켰다. 다음 유닛은 무엇인가.
▶이번 시즌 스카우트를 자주 활용했는데 스카우트가 최악으로 좋지 않은 유닛이기 때문에 사용했다. 이제 다크 아콘까지 일반화 됐기 때문에 더 이상의 유닛은 없는 것 같다. 그래도 스카우는 뽑고 싶을 때는 뽑겠다(웃음).

-This season, you used a scout and brought on a sensation. What’s the next unit.
▶This season, I used scouts often because it was the worst unit. Now even Dark Archons have become the norm so it seems like there are no more units left. But I will build Scouts when I want to (laugh).


-차기 시즌에 대한 각오는.
▶2회 연속 우승을 한 MSL 선수들은 3회 우승을 꼭 달성했다. 이번에 내가 꼭 이어나가고 싶다. 프로토스이다 보니까 어려운 싸움이 되겠지만 팬들의 믿음이 있다면 3회 우승도 달성할 수 있을 것이라 생각한다.

-Your resolution for the post season.
▶The players who won 2 consecutive MSLs always achieved their 3rd win. I really want to continue this. Since I’m a Protoss, it will be a difficult battle but I believe that if I have my fans’ faith, I can get my 3rd win.


-응원 온 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 말.
▶모두 일어나서 나의 우승을 칭찬해 주시더라. 우승의 느낌이 이런 것이라는 것을 다시 느꼈다. 다음 시즌에도 다시 느껴보고 싶다.

-What do you want to say to the fans that came to cheer you on.
▶Everyone got up and congratulated my win. I felt that winning’s feeling was like this once again. I want to feel it again next season.


-개인리그에서 가장 많은 상금인 5000만원을 받았다.
▶쓸 곳은 많다. 여러 사람들이 나에게 사달라고 하면 언제든 사주겠다. 동료들에게도 한 턱 쏠 것이고, 도와준 사람들에게도 남는다면 부모님께 모두 드리고 싶다.

-You received 50 million Wons (approximately $50000 US) – the highest ever in an individual league.
▶There are many places to spend it. If many people ask me to buy (food?) I will always buy it for them. I will pay for a meal for my teammates, and if there is some remaining after all the people who helped me, I want to give it all to my parents.


-끝으로 하고 싶은 말은.
▶아버지, 어머니, 형 등 가족들과 감독, 코치에게도 공을 돌린다. 애슬릿풋 관계자에게도 고맙다고 이야기하고 싶다. 응원해 주신 팬들에게 가장 감사드린다.

-Any last words.
▶I give credits to my father, mother, brother, etc. my family, manager, and coach. I want to say thanks to Athletes Foot as well. I am most thankful for the fans who cheered me on.

To have a sudden change also contains within a notion of changing history. The Protoss have not emerged as a dominant force in the history of the MSL, but Kim Taek Young has cast that notion aside. For the first time in MSL history, the Protoss have had appearances in the finals two times in a row, but what's more, they have won twice in a row - Kim Taek Young has made his name "The Revolutionary Protoss" known throughout all the world. Rewriting MSL history, we had a winner's interview with the player now known as "The Revolutionary Protoss."


-MSL 2회 연속 우승을 차지했다. 소감은.
This is the second straight time that you have won in the finals. What are your feelings?

▶멀게만 느껴졋던 32강이었는데 한 경기씩 올라가다 보니 우승이라는 자리까지 다시 올랐다. 감격스럽고, 벅차다. 2회 우승의 부담이 컸지만 털어내고 나니 홀가분하다.

I felt that the Ro32 was very far away (a long way to go), but one game after another, I am now here in the winner's seat. I am in awe, and I am filled with pride. I had a lot of added pressure from winning the MSL for the second straight time, but now that it's over, I feel great.

-지난 대회 우승 때와 지금의 감정을 비교해 본다면.
How do you compare last time's finals with this one?

▶그 때는 메이저 대회에 두 번째 오르는 신인이다 보니까 내가 상대하는 선수들마다 어려웠다. 이번 시즌은 조금 쉽게 올라 온 것 같다. 그렇지만 이번 결승전은 매우 힘들었다.
At that time, it was the second appearance in a major tournament, all the opponents I've faced were difficult. I felt that this season was a little easier to climb the ladder. But the finals this time around were very difficult.


-지금 가장 생각나는 사람은 누구인가.
Right now, who is the person most on your mind?

▶ 연습 도와준 선수들이 생각난다. MBC게임 히어로 동료들 모두에게 고맙고, 박정석, 장주현, 박세정, 신상호 등 다른 팀 선수들에게도 감사를 드린다. 박용운 코치가 내 연습을 봐주느라 고민 많았다. 전략을 만드는 것은 물론, 숙소에 넘쳐나는 모기를 퇴치해주는 등 컨디션 유지에 도와줬다(웃음). 여러 사람들이 함께 도와줬기 때문에 만들어낸 우승이라 생각한다.
The people who helped me practice. I am grateful to all of the MBC Game Hero teammates, Reach, Jang Joo Hyun (?), Park Sae Jung (?), Shin Sang Ho (?) etc. and to other team members. Park Yong Oon Coach thought over/helped my practice a lot. Of course, how to plan out my strategy, and get rid of the many mosquitoes back at the team house, essentially helping me to maintain my condition (smiles). A lot of people helped me together so I was able to win, I think.


-새 역사를 작성했다는 사실을 아는가.
You have created a new "note" in history. Do you know this fact?

▶알고 있다. 최초이고, 최연소 2회 우승을 차지한 프로토스다. 정말 기쁘고 좋다. 어리다 보니까 앞으로 이뤄갈 수 있는 기록도 많기 때문에 MSL 징크스인 3회 우승에 최연소로 도전하고 싶고, 4회 우승까지도 달성하고 싶다.
Yes, I know. It is the first time that the Protoss have won twice in a row. I am really happy and I feel great. Because I'm young, I feel that there is a lot of opportunity later on (more tournaments/prizes and such), I want to break the MSL jinx of only winning three times in a row, but what's more, I want to go for four times in a row.

-3대2로 간신히 승리했다. 가장 어려웠던 세트는.
You won 3-2, barely. Which was your most difficult set?

▶3, 4세트가 정말 어려웠다. 1, 2세트는 빌드 오더를 모두 준비해왔지만 3, 4세트는 연습이 부실했다. 3세트 때 즉흥적으로 대응했지만 잘 통했다. 그 덕분에 5세트까지 이끌어 갈 수 있었다.
The third, fourth set were the most difficult. The first, second set I prepared my build order well, but my practice for the third and fourth set were not so good. The third set I responded in kind (?), but the result came out well. Because of this, I was able to carry it on to the fifth set.

-이번 시즌 운으로 올라왔다는 이야기가 많다.
This season, there is a lot of talk that you got to where you are due to luck.

▶ 송병구 선수가 드라군의 사거리 업그레이드를 하지 못했다는 이야기를 경기 끝나고 들었다. 결승전까지도 운이 많이 따랐다. 전투를 펼치면서도 계속 패했기 때문에 업그레이드를 하지 않았다는 것을 몰랐다. 나에게는 운이었지만 운도 실력이라 생각한다. 나와는 상관이 없는 상대의 실수였다. 나는 최선을 다했다.
I heard that Stork was not able to research the dragoon range upgrade after the tournament. Even to the finals, luck followed me there. Even while I was fighting, I kept losing each engagement, so I did not realize that the range upgrade was not complete. It was luck to me, but I think luck is also skill, in some ways. It wasn't anything to do with my fault, it was my opponents' mistake. I did my best.

-송병구는 올 시즌 프로리그에서도 좋은 성적을 거두는 등 강력한 경쟁자였다. 실제로 상대해보니 어땠나.
Stork is a strong opponent, having a winning record in this season's Proleague. Actually fighting him, what are your thoughts?

▶안정적인 선수라고 생각했지만 전략적인 움직임도 많이 보여줬다. 예상을 벗어난 양상의 경기가 많았다. 송병구 선수의 변신에 당황했던 것이 사실이다. 마지막 5세트 때에는 서로 안전한 전략을 사용했는데 내가 승리했다.
I felt he was a safe player, but he showed a lot of strategic insight. He showed many games that would not be normally made (essentially, Stork demonstrated never before thought to occur strategies). To be honest, I was taken aback by Stork's strategy. In the final set, we both opted for safe strategy/planning, but I won.

-속으로 생각한 스코어는.
What do you think the outcome could have been? (Or what do you honestly think about the score)

▶3대2는 생각한 적이 없다. 3대0으로 일찍 끝내고 돌아가자고 생각했을 뿐이었다. 1세트에서 쉽게 끝났기 때문에 5세트를 가더라도 내가 유리하다고 생각했다.
I never thought about 3-2. I only thought let's go 3-0 finish it early and go home. The first set was easily done, so even though we went to the fifth set, I knew I was in the advantage.

-2, 4세트가 전략적인 맵이었다.
The second, fourth set were on more strategically oriented maps.

▶내가 보기에는 전략적인 맵은 하나도 없었다. 운영을 중심으로 연습을 했는데 결승 현장에서 빌드 오더를 바꾸고 싶은 생각이 들었고, 실제로도 변화를 줬다. 3세트 같은 경우에는 내가 전략을 수정함으로써 승리했다.
The way I see it, there are no strategically oriented maps. I practiced mostly on a macro build, but at the time of the tournament, I had thoughts of changing my build order, and I did change them. For instance, I won the third set because I utilized strategy more than my opponent.

-송병구에게 하고 싶은 이야기는.
Any words to Stork?

▶지난 시즌 강 민과의 4강 때 연습 상대가 송병구였다. 이후 프로리그 박영민과의 경기를 준비할 때까지 서로 도와줬다. 프로토스의 시대를 같이 이끌어 갈 동반자라고 생각한다.
Last season, the practice partner I had was Stork in the Ro4 elimination against Nal_rA. After that, my practice partner was Stork again in preparation for my match against Much in the Proleague. I feel that he is also a fellow companion who will create a new era of the Protoss.

-오늘 경기에 대한 개인적인 평가는.
Your personal thoughts on today's matches.

▶만족스럽다. 연습량도 많았고, 결과도 좋았다. 4세트 몬티홀에서 많이 보여주지 못해 아쉽다.
I'm satisfied. I practiced a lot, and the results were good. I'm a little sad that I wasn't able to show more on the fourth set, Monty Hall.

-앞으로의 목표나 각오는.
Any future goals/determinations?

▶팬들이 가장 좋아하는 게이머가 되고 싶다. 팬을 위해 색다른 플레이를 보여주고 싶고, 나를 사랑하도록 만들고 싶다. 가끔은 재미없는 경기도 나오겠지만 최대한 색깔 있는 경기를 선보이겠다.
I would like to be the fans' most favorite gamer. I would like to be totally different, a new player for the fans, and I want them to love me. Sometimes, there may be some boring matches, but to the best of my ability, I want to show matches with a lot of "color."

-올 시즌 스카우트를 사용하면서 센세이션을 불러 일으켰다. 다음 유닛은 무엇인가.
You created a sensation this season using scouts. What is your next unit?

▶이번 시즌 스카우트를 자주 활용했는데 스카우트가 최악으로 좋지 않은 유닛이기 때문에 사용했다. 이제 다크 아콘까지 일반화 됐기 때문에 더 이상의 유닛은 없는 것 같다. 그래도 스카우는 뽑고 싶을 때는 뽑겠다(웃음).
This season, I did use a lot of scouts because scouts are the worst Protoss unit, in my opinion. Now that Dark Archons have been standardized in play, I don't think there are any more units. But I will utilize scouts the next time I want to use them (smiles).

-차기 시즌에 대한 각오는.
Your thoughts on the next season.

▶2회 연속 우승을 한 MSL 선수들은 3회 우승을 꼭 달성했다. 이번에 내가 꼭 이어나가고 싶다. 프로토스이다 보니까 어려운 싸움이 되겠지만 팬들의 믿음이 있다면 3회 우승도 달성할 수 있을 것이라 생각한다.
The MSL players who won twice in a row have gone on to win for the third time in a row. This time, I would like that player to be me. Since I am Protoss, the fights may be more difficult, but if I have the fans' belief, I believe I can win for the third time in a row.

-응원 온 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 말.
A word to your fans who came out tonight.

▶모두 일어나서 나의 우승을 칭찬해 주시더라. 우승의 느낌이 이런 것이라는 것을 다시 느꼈다. 다음 시즌에도 다시 느껴보고 싶다.
All of them stood up and began to congratulate me. This is what it feels like to win, I thought again. I would like to experience that next season.

-개인리그에서 가장 많은 상금인 5000만원을 받았다.
You received the most prize money ever in an individual league tournament - 500 million (? - correct me if this is wrong) won.

▶쓸 곳은 많다. 여러 사람들이 나에게 사달라고 하면 언제든 사주겠다. 동료들에게도 한 턱 쏠 것이고, 도와준 사람들에게도 남는다면 부모님께 모두 드리고 싶다.
There are a lot of places to use this money. If a lot of people ask me to buy something for them, I will buy it for them at any time. I will buy something for my teammates, and after I help the people who helped me, I would like to give the rest to my parents.

-끝으로 하고 싶은 말은.
Any last words?
▶아버지, 어머니, 형 등 가족들과 감독, 코치에게도 공을 돌린다. 애슬릿풋 관계자에게도 고맙다고 이야기하고 싶다. 응원해 주신 팬들에게 가장 감사드린다.
Father, mother, brother, family, coach, staff, thank you so much. (I'm not sure what this next one is..) But I would like to say thank you to you too. To the fans who came out and supported me, I am most thankful.

-아들이 2회 연속 우승을 차지했다.
Your son has won twice in a row.

▶우리 아들이 최고다. 너무 장하고 자랑스럽다. 경기 전부터 (김)택용이가 우승할 것으로 생각했다.
My son is the best. I am so proud of him, and proud to be his father. I knew before the matches began that my son would win.

-우승을 예감한 특별한 이유라도 있나.
Is there any special inkling that made you believe your son would win?

▶ 택용이가 다른 선수들에 비해 긴장을 많이 하지 않는다. 결승전이라는 큰 무대에 서면 부담감을 느끼는 경우가 많은데 택용이는 다른 선수들에 비해 부담을 덜 갖는 것 같다. 택용이가 경기 전에도 자신 있다고 이야기했다. 아들을 믿었다.
Taek Young, compared to other players, is not as nervous. If you stand in front of a massive audience in the finals tournament, there are many cases of nervousness, but Taek Young isn't as nervous. Taek Young also told me that before the match, he had a lot of confidence. I believed my son.


-경기가 5세트까지 가는 접전이었다. 걱정도 됐을 것 같다.
The matches went to the fifth and final set. Didn't you worry?

▶자식 걱정하지 않는 부모가 어디 있겠는가. 게임 도중 어려운 상황도 있었지만 끝까지 아들을 믿고 기다렸고 결국 택용이가 해냈다. 정말 자랑스럽다.
Is there any parent who would not worry about his own child? During the game, there were some difficult moments, but I believed my son to win in the end, and finally, he did it. I'm very proud of him.

-오늘 저녁은 어떻게 보낼 계획인가.
How do you plan to spend dinner tonight?

▶택용이만 시간이 된다면 가족들이 모두 모여 식사라도 함께 하고 싶다. 하지만 택용이 경기가 며칠 후에 또 있어서 시간이 날지 모르겠다. 택용이가 바쁘면 나머지 식구들이라도 모여 택용이의 우승을 축하해야겠다.
If Taek Young has some time, I would like for the whole family to gather and have a meal together. But he has another show match in a few days, so I don't know if he has time. If he is busy, at least the rest of the family can get together and congratulate his success.
