For months now i have had issues with justin.tv freezing repeatedly, and nothing i had done had fixed the issue, most people tend to say it only happens to europeans because their connections aren't good enough, this is NOT the case
throughout the video my download speeds stays around 150 kb/s, my max is 750 kb/s
my cpu is around 80% but that is purely because i was livestreaming this, and i recorded the livestream video, but 80% is not maxed out, and this same lag happens when i do not stream at the same time as watching
p.s. on the bandwidth monitor green - download red - upload yellow - both in the same space
****************************** Pingtest is unable to measure my packet loss to los angeles servers, this has to be the issue....
or not????
tried it again, and this time it is fine
multiple retries on my main computer and i haven't gotten that packet loss issue again, i will test directly connecting to my modem when i can, as well as other computers
i think it may have been a fluke, but i will definitely keep this here and try to confirm later ****************************** Specs:
4 gb of ram 3.2 ghz quad core processor 7200 rpm 600 gb hard drive Nvidia gtx 260 ISP - Comcast Max Download - 750 kilobytes per second Windows 7 64 bit home premium No Proxy settings Firewall - disabled/enabled it makes no difference Normal TCP settings
I have already:
Used firefox Used chrome Used opera Used internet explorer Installed the latest verison of flash Installed multiple older versions of flash Cleared my cache Tried changing the justin.tv quality settings, lower quality seems to make the lag more random, but i wouldn't say there is less of it on average Tried different Dns servers (4.2.2.1, 8.8.8.8, and comcast default) Enabled/Disabled hardware acceleration enabled/disabled demilitarized zone on my router increased amount of data that can be stored in flash options to unlimited
While watching justin.tv streams i almost always get consistent stream freezes for no reason, so in an attempt to figure out what was happening i monitored my bandwidth while watching stream
Single Justin.tv Stream Bandwidth - Consistent Lag Notice the incredibly huge spikes, those occur when there is lag, justin.tv is failing to send me data to download in many instances
Single Ustream.tv Bandwidth - No Lag Notice there are no incredibly huge spikes, and more importantly no lag
Multiple Ustream.tv Bandwidth - No Lag [Note - the bandwidth scale is more than double the last 2 images] This shows that it is NOT my connection that is unable to keep up with the justin.tv stream
Own3d.tv Bandwidth - No Lag it isn't just ustream that doesn't lag for me
i know many others have had this issue, does anyone have a solution?
I had this problem when I was using the beta version of firefox just like the pictures show. I actually went back to chrome because of it and once I switched browsers the problem stopped. This may be your problem maybe not but it sure was mine.
i've also posted it on the justin.tv forums, they require a mod to review posts before they are posted, but i will update the OP with the justin.tv link when it is finally posted
and as already stated, i've used pretty much every browser i can
Everyone gets this. Change the stream quality from 1080p to 720p and it goes smooth. The reason why streams on the TL sidebar only show ~half is because it only counts how many people are watching at 1080p; most choose to lower it.

i've updated the OP with answers to your questions, and only my Firefox has an aversion to the tl horse, i browse the forums on opera

updated the OP, it doesn't make a difference, the lag still occurs at every quality even at 240p, and regardless there is no reason that i should have any lag whatsoever at the best quality if my connection can handle it, which it can
What dns servers are you using? If it is auto or isp I'd recommend changing to 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 which are level 3 dns servers. I use them and here are recent results. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1191586810.png

i hadn't tried that but just did
the lag persists
i will try a couple other dns' as well
good idea tho, thanks
Google's is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Edit: Did you change the dns settings on your router or just computer? I'd change it on router (if applicable.)
same thing here, but im in canada. lagging like crazy on day9's stream right now, doesnt seem like anyone else is complaining about the lag. to be honest im guessing the problem is with jtv's servers, like u, i can watch like 4 ustream streams and they dont lag but as soon as i watch maybe 2 jtv streams at 'best' quality, they lag.

What does a DNS server have to do with speed tests?
Out of pure curiosity what was the software that you used for the network activity graph?
Maybe you could try a traceroute to their servers to see if it's a bad route, and perhaps test with a few VPN's in different geographic locations to see if it fixes the problem.
Have you tried with any other computers?
You could try booting a live linux distribution such as Ubuntu to eliminate any OS issues.
Perhaps your router is trying to do some sort of application layer firewall filtering and therefore using more CPU power/memory than it can handle on the Justin.tv stream - so either maybe disabling the routers firewall (if it's a Linksys you have to do this 2 places, a bit tricky, but I'll help if thats the case) or try connecting your computer directly to your modem instead of through the router, see if that helps (just make sure to have Windows fully updated).
And as BeanerBurrito asked, you haven't touched any tcp software/registry settings in attempt to tweak anything such as TCPNoDelay ?
I allways have major major lag when watching justin.tv. And although i love all the support this guy is getting, I strongly believe that one shoudnt have to tweak his TCP settings if you can watch ustream/gomtv without any issues. No amount of tweaking will help you if there just isnt enough input.
I belive the quality justin.tv is able to provide to europe just isnt good enough and i hope this will change in the future, allthough ofc i understand how much of an investment this would take for justin.tv. I still hope they will make it in the future.

I was merely trying to figure out if he had used any tweaks/registry hacks, if not I certainly wouldn't wouldn't recommend so (except for the TCPNoDelay/ACK fix, that might be worth testing out, although I believe the stream is in UDP anyways - not sure). You can check it our here: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info16336-PingEnhancer.html, or google to find out how do it all manually via registry.
try disabling hardware acceleration with flash, as this might be causing connection problems with j.tv, as their flash stream player is a lot different from ustreams.
Right click on the flash player, click settings or "preferences" then click the left most tab, then uncheck the box that says "enable hardware acceleration.
I am Dutch (europe) and I'm having no problems at all. Uploading and downloading to/from justin.tv goes very well. It might be a stupid suggestion but I find that whenever I press alt the screen freezes. Are you using alt as a push-to-talk for a VOIP application per chance?
I know this is a very stupid suggestion but yeah. That's the only thing I can think of seeing that there's nothing wrong with your pc/connection...
