hmm. some people are nice, some arent. some will mind, some wont. a few rules of thumb would be: -never while they are in game. -dont spam them or send too many messages, if you have zero reason to message them probably try to keep it short.
most ppl are probably busy and could really careless but not always. some will appreciate you saying hello and give thanks.

if not, don't message them You can add almost anybody if you search through divisions long enough and it should only become easier once chatrooms are released. Is your choice of words possibly suboptimal?
haha possibly
but at least you know what i mean

I've done it before, and all I asked was, "Hi do you mind if I ask you a question?" and I do realize that that is a question, but if a pro is busy he'll say sorry I'm busy, or sure go ahead. I think its all about being as polite as possible because you are asking them for a response or some time to chat with you.

i think it's fine to drop them a "hey man I really look up to you and i've learned a lot from your replay/stream/etc, thanks for being so cool." Just don't be the Stan to their Slim Shady.

Even tho im not pro I dont like to get whispered during tournaments between rounds even if its "gl' or some simple question, because sometimes admins contact you or 1-10 streamers whisper you, so sometimes you got 10+ chat windows open while doing map bans which can be annoying sometimes
I guess pro's have same or similiar opinion on that, but if they arent playing tourny or anything like that I doubt they would mind to get whispered, but then again dont be Stan like universalwill said, tell them "hi balblala love you ♥♥♥" but dont over do it

plz never message somebody unless you have good reason or they have said in interviews they don't mind it. More than LAN i want the /DND command back. I personally can't stand when people who knew me from wc3 message me, if you want to talk to the pros ask for their msn.

yeah i mean it's not the end of the world or anything
but understand that if the player is very popular there will be plenty of people just like you that do the exact same thing, and it just might be the case that the player doesn't want to be bothered by any of them and just wants to play

i'd say an occasional compliment based on a recent tournament result or team news or whatever would be acceptable... but if you ask for games or wahtever youll most likely be ignored
i am obviously NOT a pro at all, but even being simply a featured streamer at TL (which is super cool ofcourse dont get me wrong!) i get numerous people who watch my stream messaging me daily, asking for games, advice, general chit-chat, whatever. even when i'm laddering with Busy up i'll still occasionally get people constantly messaging me
if youve seen my stream you know i always talk to viewers, and i always take time to respond to peoples PMing me when i'm not busy, playing, etc, but when im practicing hard with my team it gets frustrating to constantly be bombarded with little yellow text boxes
basically what i'm trying to say is that it is situationally welcomed, and otherwise situationally disliked, depending on the "pro"'s personality and what they are doing at that time.
and keep in mind i'm no pro so i can't imagine how tough it can be for them sometimes

Why would you even want to add "pros" and talk with them on b.net?
Get IRC and talk with them there instead if you want to have some conversations
As I'm a nice guy, and you might not be familiar with IRC (quakenet), download a client like www.mirc.com , choose quakenet as server and then connect. When connected write #teamliquid, you will find many "big" names in there, whois some of them and see which other channels they are in. Go there (most likely you get to talk with some in their own channels or smaller ones than a big one as teamliquid).

They can always block you if you're really annoyed, or just ignore you. So go for it, because they might enjoy it.

Well I can speak out of personal experience and to be honest it can be fairly annoying. I always try to remain calm and friendly but I mostly ignore people now. Earlier it was okay I answered every one but I get about 100 messages each day, if I place well a tour or anything I get instantly spammed by a ton of people. So I wish I could talk to each and everyone but I hope people understand if I ignore them (sometimes I receive flames for not responding even, so silly^^)

Why do you guys think that a "pro" is some special vip guy?!
For example, i met all the Quake pro's at the IEM at GamesCom this year. I talked to them, we had a lot of fun, later at this day we went out to eat and drink something together in a very nice bar.
What is the problem to talk to them? Sure its not the best if you write them like "omg im your biggest fan!!1" but it shouldnt be a problem if you contact them like you would contact any other guy.

So I'm not exactly a pro but I'm pretty high on the ladder and have gotten far in craftcups or similar a bunch of times, resultsing in me getting whispered occasionally by random people. If someone tells me they're cheering for me or something like that, it's great, much appreciated but it's very annoying when people ask for games or coaching or generally trying to be friends (as in asking to play 2v2, whispering my all the time etc.)

No its annoying, trust me. I can't say I am famous directly but I have almost 9,000 people subscribed to me on Youtube because of Call of Duty videos I make. That is the most annoying thing ever good thing is that you don't notified from friends request. Still getting messages in the middle of playing is annoying and adds up. Even if you think you are semi on there level. Just don't message them. Really if you make a name for yourself I am sure they will be more receptive to your message because they know you know how it is.
So No don't message them unless its for something specific like coaching lessons or something like that then maybe you befriend them. Random message out of the blue don't do that.

Silly indeed. I only comment in IRC chat if their is a live stream. I never would want to interrupt a pro (like TLO) while their trying to practice. I'm sure the spam does get old.
Also wishing you a speedy treatment for your injury

Depends on the person really.. Some people are cocky and look down upon others, some realize that just because a person hasnt put in the time to become a progamer doesn't mean you can act like an ass. If i'm on a losing streak i'll be the first, but if you aren't annoying and I didn't just get rushed 5 games in a row I'll usually be the second. If you are boxer or something I think its reasonable to not expect a reply though...

I'm sure it's about as welcome as receiving unsolicited phone calls. That is, totally annoying. Why are there so many people who think it's ok to harass these players? If you want to get in contact with them most of them are on TL, send them a PM here if you have actual reason to contact them. Those who wish to be in contact with fans will have some way of doing it outside of battlenet, those who want privacy should have that respected.

Used to have alot of people msg me or try to add me as a friend when I was playing COD mw1, now people have started doing it on black ops. It doesn't bother me because I don't really have to pay it any attention, and I don't, not because I'm trying to be a dick, but because I really don't have any interest in playing with people that I don't know IRL. The ones that send multiple messages and are very persistent are annoying though.

I've got a case where it's quite alright to message a pro. Anyone remember the infamous IdrA vs QXC series at MLG DC?
Well, here's what I messaged to QXC after one of the games. Enjoy!
+ Show Spoiler +
This happened in more than one game, it had to be done!
