- Server going down for maintenance in 10 seconds...
....

..
.
- Extended maintenance. To ensure the best possible gameplay we have extended our normal 12hour maintenance to 12 additional hours. Welcome back soon!

I just love always being connected dont you?
Hey, where u guys planning a LAN this week? I am sorry, you cant get more than 3 unique IPs from your ISP at the same time. I guess everyone must buy their own mobile internet, have fun sitting on 300ms.. or u can do what blizzard wants, stay at home in a basement playing alone "always online"
or.
Oooh.. and btw b.net/internet just went down, no LAN tonight guys!

Bottom line is blizzard is removing feature after feature and thats it. Apparently you have to be a blind fanboy to embrace these new cool removal of features blizzard is sporting because I just cant see 1 positive thing about removing singleplay or lan.

Oh and btw, theres no security benefits at all its just Blizzard trying to make excuses. diablo3 will be hacked in a week and cracked for singleplay in less than 2. Countles games that did the same thing proves this, always online does not prevent piracy it is a fact.

Well look at this way.

- The game will have less hacker problems etc. because of the online play.
- It will get more pople online always, as they have to in order to play.

From someone with stable internet this is awesome.

- A few people, especially those who travel alot will have trouble.

I'm sorry but sacrifices have to be made. You'll have to sort yourself out, harsh but just reality.

oh ya sure, just look at starcraft 2, always down for maintenance, you can hardly ever play because of all these downtimes and of course you cant play lan because some reason you just made up

get real

Yup they got starcraft 2 campaign in a week....
But I'll put a dollar on them not getting D3 for quite some time.

Edit: In D2LOD you could sit 4 guys in a room off 1 IP. This game is going to have less?

Downtime for reset and once a year maintenance must have been terrible. Whatever would you do without games for 24 hours out of a year.

NNQQ anyways no amount of whining is going to stop game developers from doing this.

Edit2 WoW has cracked offline....

People aren't "embracing" these features; they do not care about it. They recognize that Blizzard needs to protect their profits if they're going to make the games we like, and thus far, that protection does not materially affect the game for them. If it does for you, then I'm sorry. But that's a calculated risk Blizzard took; not everyone who might have bought it with offline play will buy it with online-only.

From my perspective, Diablo 3 is not affected in any significant way by the presence or absence of offline play. I place no value in being able to play D3 anywhere at any time, so I don't have a problem with them doing this.

Let me correct you here: sacrifices need not be made. I don't see why Blizzard can't do it the same way they made SC2's offline mode possible. Just force people to authenticate every two weeks or so.

This is pretty much the same DRM Ubisoft applied to their games in 2010, but because it's Blizzard, everyone suddenly thinks it's ok..

Do I really need to remind anyone of the amount of flack ubisoft got from costumers and reviewers alike just for implementing that kind of DRM?

Sacrifices do not need to be made, but it just makes thing so easy for blizzard I wouldn't bother with it either. Why would I a big company care about the 7 people who won't buy my product because they can't afford internet or can't find something to do if their internet is down or battle.net is? Keep that 350 bucks and I'll save 300k in programming.

Ubisofts games are have quite a large offline mode. I'd rather have blizzard just concentrate on the online portion.

Ever heard of a thing called NAT?

edit- even one public ip address would be enough for you and all of your friends to play together online.

There's enough info and controversy based around the always-online debate to provide about four good posts, all of which have been rehashed hundreds of times.

You're all special, smart snowflakes, but your argument that more than .1% of people have bad int or some people just want offline singleplayer or some people want to lan or the idea that you're not going to buy the game don't change the fact that D3 not only should be always-online, but HAS to in order to keep a fair environment and maintain a healthy economy. You really need to understand this; SC2 didn't require online-only to be as great a game as Blizzard wants, D3 does.

Don't be shocked when people who have been participating in this thread are being condescending to you, your laziness and refusal to be informed/less stubborn has brought this thread to a halt, spinning around in a mindless, discussion-less vortex of people playing pattycake with poor ideas.

You can read this post and get mad like most mindless people do when they have no arguments to stand on, or you can just take a nice fresh breath of air and talk about something besides how Jay Wilson is the new Dark Wanderer because he's forcing you to stay online to enjoy a game we've all been excited about for years.

In all honesty, I don't care about a good economy when I'm soloing. It's just not important.

Yes, nerd apathy is a very common argument because you don't need to prove the point since it's opinion. Unfortunately it's not a good point because all these selfish people can't seem to understand that Blizzard is making a game for more than you, and want to make the best game possible for everyone. The argument isn't what you want that's not there, it's what should be there to make it best for all.

Or they just want to try and stop piracy and in turn punish legit customers who want single player. I dont get the excuse making for cutting out features.

As has been said in many, many posts, including the one you're quoting, they did it because the benefits outweighed the costs. I don't want to think there's a mental gap in this discussion but I'm being left with little other conclusions.

There is no offline play, why would there be? Everyone has internet, you can still play single player. The benefits of online only play greatly outweight the 0.01 percent where your internet goes down and you still want to play.

What about people like me who were looking forward to playing on the go on my Laptop? Now that is not possible T_T. Pretty ignorant post.

If your laptop is decent enough to run d3, and you are such an on the go guy that its going to be your main play style, then get wireless internet card.

edit : why do i keep replying to the trolls -_- people really can't think like this

Are you calling me a troll? I only really use my Laptop on the go for a hour a day. I cannot justify getting a portable internet access card for 15$+ a month when I don't use it all that often.

But you can justify blizzard changing all of their code and everything so you can play offline?

The difficulty of changing code isn't even the thing Blizzard wants to prevent, it's ruining the community and economy.

It isn't about the benefits outweighing the costs though you are on the right track.
Since they have to spend less time programming by not programming a single player into the game they actually save money while making sure that everyone buys their game.

I really don't see many people playing offline anyway. Perhaps there are more than I think, but all 5 of them are out of luck.

You think they aren't making single player to save money. Time for another break from this thread.

I think what most people keep missing is that online-only primarily exists for the sake of security.

Diablo 3 is going to be forged similar to an MMO, meaning that most of the important data is stored on Blizzard's servers rather than the player's computer. This makes creating and testing hacks much harder to do because it's incredibly hard to exploit server-side data compared to client data. To be able to do so means having to hack into Blizzard's servers (incredibly difficult), or exploiting how the server receives data (easy for Blizzard to detect). Hackers are pretty much a dime a dozen in Diablo 2, but are a rarity in WoW due to how its programmed. The removal of mods is probably meant for the prevention of bots and hacks as well, as Blizzard doesn't want ANY outlets for hackers to exploit.

Having any kind of major offline function means that any important game data will have to be stored client-side, and that kind of thing is what leads to hacks and exploits overrunning the game. Finding ways to prevent cheating is something that gamers have demanded of developers for a long time, but I'm guessing that these people didn't realize that sacrifices have to be made in order to ensure a cheat-unfriendly environment. Saying that Blizzard is being greedy is silly because Blizzard is shutting out an entire market for the sake of making their game cheat-free. Last time I checked, making a product better at the expense of a potential customer market is the exact opposite of greedy.

Obviously this decision sucks for the people without reliable internet, but that's just the reality of an online-only model. As Blizzard interviews have said, if you're in a situation that doesn't allow you to be online, then just play an offline game to pass the time. There are offline games and online games, play whatever is available.

Its funny how much people cried about client side, saying too many hacks occured and it ruined the game. Now Blizz made it server side, and people are crying about it too...

people who have high speed internet, but are QQing anyways, and are an extremely small minority.

Blizz made a business decision. Alienate people who don't have internet, or risk the entire game screwing up for everyone due to hacks, a much larger cost due to increased investment into security and maintenance, have a harder time balancing the game and getting feedback through usage statistics, and have lower performance for everyone. Pretty simple choice, and polls show an overwhelming number of PC gamers have broadband, and I'd bet the overwhelming majority of those who'd be interested in D3 have broadband already.

And spending $40 a month on broadband just to play D3 isn't the most expensive purchase for a PC gamer. Considering how much PC gamers spend on their rigs (OCing, customization, etc) compared to PC gamers, it's not a stretch that the few who don't have broadband when D3 comes out wouldn't be pushed into buying it because of D3.

Thing is we didn't ask about most of those things and they're taking away pretty much basic (LAN, offline mode out of the box, replay watching online in sc2, custom game interface) features we enjoyed all this time.

About the offline mode, i've had 3 times where internet was out and i thought well lets play some sc2 vs AI but couldn't because sc2 could not authorize which is strange since i log on nearly once a day...

It just has flaws all around and to throw it all on piracy is total bs because it will be hacked in a matter of hours.

The thing is noone is throwing it all on piracy. There are several reasons for it, that have been discussed to death in this thread, some of them even in the post above yours. And the negative side will only deeply affect a very small potential playerbase, and they are not even the ones complaining the most.

Can we quit discussing the offline/online no LAN thing. Its old. Its not gonna change stop bitching about it. If you don't like it then don't play, or join the 20th century and pay for your games legit and play online.

Now back on topic: What do you guys think about D2 Runes? I LOVE playing around with runes, especially for lower level characters, adding runes making combinations and having a kewl treasure hunt to find the right amount of sockets in a item you want and finding a Superior 5 socketed axe its so much fun! Has anyone heard of similar things in D3? Ive been reading around and the only use of gems or whatever are the attachments to spells to increase effectiveness.
Look for the flaw that lost the game not the flaw in the game.

Well guess what is more fun? Actually finding a rare item that is worth something! Instead of excitement for a socketed item that will be used for a dime a dozen runeword that looks and acts the same as every other fucking guy on bnet has. How about actually finding item with every unique characteristic affix, and original APPEARANCE. Ever dreamed of having a character completely dressed in red(or purple, or blue, or green, or black, or orange, or brown) armor and weapon with fashionable styles, with name "RedBoy"? Guess what, this is impossible in LoD while remaining viable, and neither is finding original useful items possible.

Because that is what expansion is, a giant joke, a scam, a circus. There is no real depth to the item system to it, its a pale shadow of what Classic Diablo2 has.
Aah thats the stuff..
