They increased the level of direct control over the game while simultaneously reducing the level of fascination-inducing charm of the game world. It's not so much about different aspects of economy, routing or combat, it's about the "feel" of the game in general. The newer titles might be decent strategy / build-up games, but that's it. They're nothing special anymore, just another addition to the genre instead of a shiny example. | ||

It's fun to just jump in, play one game for an hour or so, then go do something else. It's been a long ass time since I played the original game, and I've no idea what they've done with the series since then, but 7 is allll about economy. Combat is just a tiny fraction of the overall experience. There's a lot of derptacular stuff, like the plot of the campaign (which makes you want to punch the protagonist in the face for being so herpus derpus), and all of the excessive social-gaming functions thrown all over the bloody place (you won a single freaking battle during the tutorial and got a Bronze award Combat achievement. Would you like to post it to Facebook?), but the core of the game itself is a lot of fun between managing how you're going to obtain the victory points you need. Even though there's very little combat, there's a lot of competition when you're trying to beat each-other to the punch to establish trade routes, research technologies and get your hands on more land. Deadly Shadows was when they took the series to the new Unreal Engine and I think, design-wise, they kind of ruined it. The old Dark engine had a quaint charm that just 'fit', and there was less tension in Deadly Shadows as it seemed like you could get out of a lot of sticky situations via combat. I played Deadly Shadows very little, though, so I don't know how the whole experience turns out. I can't remember if they ended up railroading the player through the game, or if they kept the freedom of exploration/looting/getting lost part of the gameplay in there. | ||
