It seems like Steam has decided everyday should be a Christmas sale, this is just crazy. They have 2 games on sale for Ubisoft week, 2 midweek madness sales, and a daily sale. How am I ever going to pay my rent if Steam has sales like this all the time?

So far all the games have been pretty bad tho

Settlers 7, Uplink, and the Sam and Max games are all well received by people who like their respective genres.
It's easier not to.

Ruse any good? I don't understand Settlers at all. Is it Simcity or more like Black and White (or any other RTS game)

the first parts focused mainly on economy i'd say, you had shitloads of ressources to manage and goods to produce and while there was combat it wasn't nearly as big as in something like starcraft

maybe comparable to the anno/dawn of discovery series

but afaik (i haven't played since settlers4) they went more and more in the direction of you standard medieval RTS game

i'd suggest getting an older part of the series for even less than the 20bucks

i think the second part was widely considered to be the best and they released an "anniversary edition" of it with updated graphics

I'd like to respond to this as I'm a huge fan of the early Settler games but never enjoyed the latter parts of the series. I'm sure there's a lot of nostalgia factoring in this "review" of mine, but even today I still find myself playing Settlers 2 Gold every now and then, but I've never touched one of the newer games again after the initial play-through (Settlers 3 and 4) and haven't bothered with any of the following ones.

I had to think a while about what makes Settlers 2 so charming for me, and I'm sure it's the distance of the player to the game's world. In a sense, it's a kind of "god game" - you care about certain administrative tasks, plot land, set up construction sites, but the actual work - from building to fighting - is done by your settlers, and independently so. Oh, you do give them certain instructions and regulate the flow of ressources and personnel to a degree, but that's it - you can't control very much else.

Which means you're free to admire the game world and the level of lovingly designed detail. Sure, you could plan the new set of mines and their connected infrastructure to the last detail, but you could as well watch the treecutter or fisherman or blacksmith doing his work, watch that one gold coin being transported from the north to the south of your little empire etc. etc.

All the parts after S2Gold have taken away from this. They increased the level of direct control over the game while simultaneously reducing the level of fascination-inducing charm of the game world. It's not so much about different aspects of economy, routing or combat, it's about the "feel" of the game in general. The newer titles might be decent strategy / build-up games, but that's it. They're nothing special anymore, just another addition to the genre instead of a shiny example.

Far Cry and Far Cry 2 up for sale today. Would anyone recommend either of them? They're both $2.50 and $5 respectively.

far cry 1 is absolutely amazing. One of the best single player games imo,and very hard to beat. fc2 was developed by ubisoft and compared to fc1 is like comparing Stalin vs Martians with brood war =P Maybe I am a bit harsh I dont know,I thought it was awful.

Also what I came here to ask haha. I figure two games for 7.50, both with pretty high metascore ratings can't be abd, but I was wondering if there were people who owned the game(s) that could give a bit of firsthand experience here.

FC and FC2 are nothing alike beyond the fact they're FPS. Keep that in mind. I enjoyed the first far more than the second though, simply because FC1's playthrough was on the level of HL1's for me, the story was relevant, the graphics very good for its time, and the AI doesn't jerk off.

I've been playing 7 a lot lately. It's fun to just jump in, play one game for an hour or so, then go do something else. It's been a long ass time since I played the original game, and I've no idea what they've done with the series since then, but 7 is allll about economy. Combat is just a tiny fraction of the overall experience. There's a lot of derptacular stuff, like the plot of the campaign (which makes you want to punch the protagonist in the face for being so herpus derpus), and all of the excessive social-gaming functions thrown all over the bloody place (you won a single freaking battle during the tutorial and got a Bronze award Combat achievement. Would you like to post it to Facebook?), but the core of the game itself is a lot of fun between managing how you're going to obtain the victory points you need. Even though there's very little combat, there's a lot of competition when you're trying to beat each-other to the punch to establish trade routes, research technologies and get your hands on more land. Me likey.

The original Thief games were great - best stealth-em-ups ever. Deadly Shadows was when they took the series to the new Unreal Engine and I think, design-wise, they kind of ruined it. The old Dark engine had a quaint charm that just 'fit', and there was less tension in Deadly Shadows as it seemed like you could get out of a lot of sticky situations via combat. I played Deadly Shadows very little, though, so I don't know how the whole experience turns out. I can't remember if they ended up railroading the player through the game, or if they kept the freedom of exploration/looting/getting lost part of the gameplay in there.

What caught my interest yesterday was Jamestown, we don't get too many shmups these days (at least on PC) and I've always liked most of them. Seems pretty solid game, though the SNES like sprites and the text font from 90's adventure games were a bit of suprise.

Too bad the Co-Op is only local right now, researched a bit about it and they said in some interview about adding proper network play if there's demand, Even if it is a few man team I hoped that would be in the initial release.
