Sorry everyone, haven't been on teamliquid for quite a long time.

yosata - 0xc000007b means that some older game installer put a 32bit D3DX10_43.dll in the c:\windows\system32 directory, which is bad because that's the directory for 64bit files. You need to delete that file, and run the directx web updater again.

Can someone help me figure out the best settings for my set up? I've been streaming fine until recently, stream starting to lag and stutter every 30 seconds or so. I haven't changed anything within my settings, maybe they're just not optimized correctly.

GPU: GeForce 9800 GTX+ (Need a new video card, I know)

Current Settings:
Quality: 10
Max Bitrate: 1500
Buffer Size: 1500
Audio Encoding: AAC Bitrate 128
Server: US West - Los Angeles (I tried LA Secondary and still the same)
Custom: 1920 x 1080
Resolution Downscale: 2.00 (960x540)
FPS: 30
Disable Aero at Startup: Yes

Set your bitrate to 1100 and work your way up testing lag. I have the same upload speed and I cant do 1500.

Great guide. OBS is a great program and better than my experience I've had with XSplit.

Hey, I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas on how I could improve the quality of my stream or be able to stream at my native resolution.

Processor: i5 3570k @ 3.4 (stock)
RAM: 16 GB
Video Card: 2GB GeForce GTX 650

Current Settings:
Quality: 10
Max Bitrate: 2500
Buffer Size: 2500
Audio Encoding: AAC Bitrate 128
Server: US East - Ashburn, VA (Secondary) (I get the lowest ping and generally lower jitter when I use R1CH's JTVPing tool)
Custom: 1920x1200
Resolution Downscale: 1.50 (1280x800)
FPS: 30/45/60
Disable Aero at Startup: No (I use Windows Classic, aero should already be disabled)

I streamed last night, 3 games of DotA2, one at 30fps, 45fps, and 60fps.
I didn't drop any frames during the broadcast of the game @ 60fps, but I'm not sure if the 60fps looks any better then the 45 fps one.

Here's the links to those 2 games:
45 fps - http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355664272
60 fps - http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355670989

The first thing I'm curious about is if there's any way I could improve the quality of the stream, when I try to watch it looks a bit blurry, and I'm not sure if that's because the resolution is downscaled for the stream and then looks bad because I fullscreen it or if there's something I could tweak to improve this.

If it's possible, I'd like to be able to stream at my native resolution of 1920x1200, but I'm not sure what I'd need to adjust to get it working. I tried increasing the bitrate up to 2750/2750 and even down to 2200/2200. I tried changing the preset to faster and also superfast using the above bitrates on both but the stream lost frames very quickly so it's back on veryfast.
Generally what happens in all of these tests is the stream will run fine maybe 1-2 minutes before it starts dropping frames. In many cases I'll see the colored indicator in the lower right corner of OBS flash from green->red just before it happens. Not sure if it's worth mentioning but I have vsync enabled in DotA2.

Spoiler for some of different configurations I've tried.

^ I don't know man, both links look pretty damn clear and smooth to me. There might be room for small improvements, but I don't think anyone would have any complaints viewing your stream.

Try 1 or 2 other servers. Go 20fps, veryfast, 2k bitrate, you shouldnt have any problems.

If you are having problems related to bitrate, it's probably just because the higher resolution is maxing out the bitrate you gave it easier or spiking a bit over it and you wasnt able to stream at it before, it just didnt get pushed

Its probably better to stream 1920x1080 because basically nobody uses 1920x1200 displays in comparison to 1080 especially, or lower resolutions, you can play 1920x1080 with black bars or zoom to fit screen but i prefer first method

Thanks for taking a look at the videos z0rz, and thanks Cyro, I appreciate all the tips. I tried running the stream at 20fps, veryfast, 2k bit, 1920x1200, tried a few different servers, and I still appear to be getting dropped frames unfortunately.

I'm hoping I can get a streaming config down that'll suit most games since other streaming software I've used seems to have different performance depending on the game, I'll probably just go back to downscaling my resolution and streaming at 60/45fps.

It doesnt make sense for you to be dropping frames, especially at one resolution but not another at the same bitrate. I think its maybe caused by poor ratecontrol not using the bitrate you have allocated for lower resolutions, but the file should be pretty much identical to the server if you are using the same bitrate, regardless of resolution.

Well, I went ahead and did a couple more stream tests, maybe this will help, maybe not.

1920x1200 (downscaled 1.5 to 1280x800) @ 60fps - http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355879155
1920x1200 @ 20fps - http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355883528

Feel free to skip over the 60 fps one as I know that already works fine, more for comparison if needed. I added what's being reported in OBS while streaming the stream window so you can see what I'm talking about. I don't have a single frame drop during the 60fps video.

On the 20 fps video, if you skip to the 15:00 mark and watch it out, you'll notice 2-3 distinct hiccups in which after you'll see the drop frame count shoot up 20-40 frames at a time. You can also see the fluctuating numbers on the right which I assume is the bitrate that's being transferred?

When I've tested at higher fps, I've only gotten a larger amount of frame drops as time progresses, not really sure what that would indicate. Also all other settings were the same as I listed in my earlier description. I'm content with streaming downscaled at 60fps, but since your last post said it didn't make sense I figure I'd try to get you some more info and see it's possible to nail down what might be really going on. I'm willing to keep testing and posting if more suggestions come my way, but if I should just settle where I'm at feel free to tell me to go away :D

Edit: Just trying to add in info I think may be worth noting I haven't already mentioned:
-DotA2 is Borderless Window
-Using Game Capture to capture DotA2
-Between tests I'm just modifying settings and start streaming right away, not closing/reopening the application
And just a thought, would it be worth it at all to try and increase the buffer bitrate?

Can you test using another capture method? You could try changing buffer but im not really sure of all the effects of it

I'll do a 20 min test using Software Capture -> Monitor Capture and another test using Software Capture -> Window Capture and link them in 45 min or so, will just edit this post with the videos.

Screen Cap with Monitor @ 20fps 1920x1200 - http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355899521
Screen Cap with Window @ 20fps 1920x1200 - http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355907628

So the first video dropped no frames up until right around the 20:00 mark, so I let it run for an extra few. Second video actually dropped no frames at all. I'm in the process of running another test with game cap to see if it was my internet possibly throttling earlier causing the drops, will edit and post results as well.

Edit: So, testing with Game Capture again, this time no frames dropped!
Game Cap @20 fps 1920x1200 - http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355913949

I've got another 20 min before I can actually start playing so I'm gonna test out 30 fps at the current res, see if it drops at all, I'd assume if it doesn't then it's probably my net holding me back right?

Final Edit: Link for the 30 fps
http://www.twitch.tv/tahkira/b/355916979
Got frame drops like crazy after about 12-13 min, just cut the recording at 16 cause it had already dropped a few hundred frames.

edit: Messed up some stuff, nvm.

It doesnt make sense to me for you to be getting drops after capture/encoding if that goes ok on one resolution/fps setting but not another at the same bitrate

I'll monitor the thread and give any other suggestions a try, I might try messing with the buffer tomorrow a bit and see if I see any improvement. I'll try to post my findings if I make any headway on my own. Thanks again for the responses.

Posting it up here in hopes that someone can help me out. I've made a short video showing my specs, obs options, and the problem I'm running into. The only thing I didn't show was the resolution I'm streaming at which is 1920x1080 with no downscale at 20fps. I've tried it with downscale set to 1280x720 too, same issue. I've also tried multiple bitrate and quality balance settings. My buffer size always matches my bitrate except in one test where I made it 2/1. At 5000 bitrate with certain settings, the video lags out completely rather than just dropping in quality. Other than that the problem is consistent. At about 1 minute the quality of the stream drops and never comes back. Any ideas?

I have a question regarding if the program can run video's on it like pictures, I have looked all over the place for some way to add a video to a Scene, I would love to have the video our team uses to show our sponsors and since my computer is very angry at xsplit for some reason I can only use OBS but it doesn't seem to want to add video's. Am I just blind or is this just not in the program yet?

Thanks for the help in advance.

It's not in the program yet to be able to add videos, but you can make it into a gif and then add by using "add image".

I could stream fine at 1280x720 on xsplit after using gunrun's guide, but I lagged with planetside 2 streaming, so hoping to figure this out so I can possibly have less lag problems.

Planetside 2 runs awfully, nothing you can do really. My system (OC'd i7 950, gtx580) had fps minimums in the 20-30 range with few settings up, it is CPU intensive but puts almost all load on one thread and seems to max out GPU sometimes too and cause massive sudden framerate drops.

IIRC TB was talking about how he was dipping below 30fps with a 3930k and 3-way SLI or whatever his rig is
