(TLDR at the bottom)
My 6ish months old Steelseries 6Gv2 keyboard just broke. The "1" key stopped working. Over the course of about a day, it went from "sometimes not working" to "not working no matter what."
I'm pretty bummed out as I absolutely love how it feels, looks (minimalistic, no flashy lights) and, up until now, performs.
I've looked up the issue and I've tried plugging the keyboard in via both USB and PS2 on multiple computers. I've also tried taking the cap off the key and trying to get it to work that way. No luck.
Here's my issue, I live in Iceland and not a single store here carries Steelseries peripherals. I've checked all the major ones, and, as far as I know, pretty much all the minor ones, as well.
I could probably get something out of the warranty (not sure about the specifics) but in all honesty, with shipping costs and waiting times, I might end up waiting up to two months for something happen, it's just not an option for me.
Now, my actual question is twofold:
1) This is a long shot, I realize that, but does anyone have any suggestions for me to get my keyboard working? It's a real shame, as it's just that single key that doesn't work, and I really do love the design and feel of the 6Gv2
2) Can anyone recommend similar mechanical keyboards from other manufacturers? I've been looking into Razer keyboards, as stores over here actually carry those, but I can only find ones that have flashy lights all over them. I sleep in the same room as my computer, so I need a mechanical keyboard that doesn't have any unnecessary lights and also, doesn't take up too much desk space, similar to the 6Gv2. PS2 connector would be a plus, as well.
I would just get another 6Gv2, but I really didn't like the time it took to ship here, and I'm wary about getting another Steelseries product from this experience. Shipping times (and costs) being what they are, I just can't afford to be messing around with this.
TLDR: Anyone know of a dark, minimalistic, mechanical keyboard, that's not from Steelseries?
|
I personally try to stay away from "gaming" keyboards, but that is my personal preference.
If you don't want or need the extra buttons/flashy lights/etc then I would suggest looking into something else.
I personally use a Filco Majestouch(tenkeyless) but I am not sure about their availability in your location. I have a friend with a Das and he loves it as well, but I've never used them personally.
That being said I also do know a few friends with the black widow and they love it, but like I said I just don't like the typical "ITS GAMING, LOOK AT ALL THE BUTTONS/LIGHTS" peripherals being put out.
I've also heard nice things about Leopold keyboards as well.
|
If you want something that will last long, try not to get razer as they have a cheaper build quality. Try to rego with SS or try out Das/Filco/Ducky keyboards
|
6GV2 is the sturdiest keyboard out there for gaming, not sure how you managed to break it.
|
if you want something that is similar to the 6GV2 i would go with a rosewill mechanical keyboard. But don't know if you can get it Iceland. you can get the same switches as the 6GV2 too.
|
My razer blackwidow is over a 1 and a half years old. Still works. I've read a lot of steel series keys stop working. I think that has to do with the soldering of the switches. I opened my black widow and the soldering was pretty good. I have installed and removed o-ring dampeners. I've also done 2 key cap swaps. The end result is my keyboard is still alive. The letters of the original keys has barely faded. The only cheap build quality portion of the board that i have found is the top outer gloss casing. It makes the keyboard feel cheap and has a little bit of flex.

I keep hearing good things about Filco boards. Their price is really steep, though.

I came across a Rosewill keyboard very similar to the 6Gv2 but I was turned off by how the logo looked.

Appreciate the input. Black Widow would be a relatively cheap and convenient option for me (as I can just go pick it up and not have to ship it). I just hate how it lights up like a space ship since I sleep in the same room as my computer and it's usually on 24/7.

You can always try out a TTesports one. Theres a Meka G1
|
Rosewill if you have a small budget and you want to go a step up. Then go grab some filcos. Das keyboards IMO are over rated. Dont go for SS, TTesports or razer shit cuz they have pretty bad quality.
|
Well you won't exactly cry over the Blackwidow. A lot of pros still use it. I use it. I've had it for about a year now, a key stopped working (must of been some crumbs) but it must of unjostled as it's back to normal (was 6 months ago). So definitely sturdy keyboard
|
|
I wouldn't go with the Blackwidow. My friend owns it and it works only around 70% of the time for him (its about 8 months old), and from what I've read from forums all over (including this one), the Blackwidow is known to have some faulty construction compared to other mechanical keyboards.
If your looking into a beautiful, simple mechanical keyboard, I can emphatically recommend the Das Keyboard Professional Model S. It costs a little more than the Blackwidow Ultimate (albeit more than the normal Blackwidow), it's still an amazing keyboard for an amazing price. I know Destiny uses the Das and he likes it a lot, although he uses the Ultimate version. The only thing different about the ultimate version is the fact that it doesn't have letters etched on the keys. It's not only very good for gaming, it is amazing to use for typing. Sometimes I find myself making my essays longer for school just to keep typing on the Das .
The Das uses Cherry MX Blue switched, which are not known as "gaming" switches, but are regarded as "general purpose" switches, which are different than the MX Black switches that the 6GV2 uses. For specifics on switches, there is a very nice mechanical keyboard guide on TL that you can consult (of course). So I recommend getting the Das Keyboard Professional Model S, but in the end, it's really up to you and what is your preference! Good luck!
|
Just bought a Rosewill RK-9000 on newegg because it was on sale. Solid keyboard with Blue switches. no flashy stuff. Similar to the 6GV2 imo. Look it up.
|
Das is nice, I have one with the brown switches, good keyboard. I recently got a blackwidow ultimate stealth and really like it.
You say the LEDs are a big problem for you, either buy the non-ultimate version which has no LEDs, or the ultimate itself has a button the keyboard that cycles the LED brightness, and includes an OFF setting. So with the blackwidow you really need not worry about the lights in your room.
|
i use a filco and its wonderful.
also, no idea how you broke that 6gv2 keyboard lol. those things are fucking invincible in my experience.
|
I'd still contact steelseries and see what they can do for you, it's worth a shot. As far as other keyboards go, the common answer is typically filco. Haven't tried one myself, but I've never heard anything bad about them except for the price. I have a Das myself and I like it alot. If you don't like a glossy finish though, I cant recommend it- other than that, its a great keyboard.

Appreciate the input from everyone. I've decided on Rosewill RK-9000RE.
I'm in a bit of a pickle, though.
I'm trying to find a carrier who will ship it internationally (to Iceland, specifically).
Amazon.com doesn't ship electronics to Iceland (Amazon.co.uk does, but doesn't carry it). Mechanicalkeyboards.com ships internationally, but not to Iceland for some reason. Ebay only has a listing that doesn't ship to Iceland. Newegg.com doesn't ship internationally. Rosewill.com doesn't sell them online.
And now I've run out of ideas. Does anyone have any idea of some other site I might try?
|
I had the exact same problem withmy 6gv2. Steelseries covered replacing mine under warranty as you suspected. You should definitely utilize your warranty, afterall the warranty costs are bundled into your purchase price. In the states I just had to pay to ship my keyboard to them. It was also pretty fast. I think I was without a keyboard for just a few days over a week.
You should also consider how manufacturing works in general. When everything is assembled according to tolerances and such, it lasts a long long time. If just a few things are out of wack, you have a lemon and it dies quickly. My replacement keyboard has been going strong for almost a whole year now, so all you need to do is get ahold of a properly assembled keyboard and it will last forever.

I've broken two 6Gv2 Steelseries keyboards T T

Rosewill is a newegg brand basically. So i think it would be pretty hard to get in Europe.
Afaik you could repair your SS if you know how to solder, by swapping the scroll lock switch with '1'. But I don't so can't really help.
I would try your warranty with SS.
if you are fine with spending the money then get a Filco, otherwise there is Leopold and Ducky but I have no idea if you can get these in Iceland. Also if you don't need a numpad look at the CM quickfire rapid.
|
I'll probably try to do something about the warranty once I get a replacement board. I just don't want to be stuck without a mechanical keyboard for too long.
Still no success in finding the Rosewill if anyone has some suggestions.

Aside from what everyone says about mechanical and membrane keyboards, I went back to one of my old membrane ps/2 keyboards and I loved it. I felt like everything moved so much faster. I still use my black widow from time to time but the fucking lights and macro keys are so annoying. I wish I could cut them off (literally cut them off and toss them).

I am using the Coolermaster Quickfire mechanical keyboard. It is good, very basic, and clean. It doesn't have the num-pad so if you want that don't get it.

CM offers both fullsize and tenkeyless mechanical keyboards.

Couldn't you just swap out the broken switch? I'm no expert, but link.

The 6gv2 is the exact opposite to " ITS GAMING, LOOK AT ALL THE BUTTONS/LIGHTS", it's an extremely minimalistic, solid and well built keyboard.

You can always try out a TTesports one. Theres a Meka G1 Thats what I have and its great! I would stay away from Razer...pains me to say it but i've gone through 3 differnt things (two mouse one keyboard) and I had to exchange all of them 1 or more times to get ones that worked properly.

if you can buy 1 of the 4 rosewill keyboards i reccomend on doing so even if your in the UK maybe check ebay
|
Das Model S Ultimate is still up there with the BlackWidow in terms of quality, but it's not flashy at all. Almost entirely black with white letters (you can even buy a version without letters if you want), zero macro keys, no background lights or whatever. I actually preferred it to my old BlackWidow, and it's actually lasted much longer.
|
The blackwidow regular edition is usually way cheaper than all the other keyboards previously mentioned. As for the lights, there's only one in the logo in the front which can be turned off with a function key.
|
Blackwidow stealth edition, all the greatness of the blackwidow but without the bells and whistles
|
Tesoro Durandal just launched in Sweden and I just got one. While it certainly breaks the criteria of being "minimalistic" it's got really nice build quality for the price. While saying this I'm comparing it to SS 6gv2, the Blackwidows and the Qpad boards. I got this board instead of a ducky/filco/das because I feel that you pay mostly for the branding there.
The keys are very stable and also feel surface treated with something which gives a grip that I have yet to see anywhere else. It's available with all 4 switches so take your pick. I got the G1NL (the expensive edition) because it was the only one available with brown switches in my local store and I thought I might as well, but you can go for the G1N instead if absolutely have to be minimalistic. The technology you get with the G1NL (USB full n key rollover etc) is quite rich for the price as well though.
Now for the main concern with this keyboard, the futuristic spaceship look that makes your gut twist and your eyes itch. It's not actually as annoying as pictures on the webz make it =P All in all the colour of the board is pretty dark, so the looks don't stand out that much once it's on your desk.
TLDR; Tesoro Durandal G1NL is a surprisingly qualitative keyboard for the price, ignore the looks and get it if it's available in Iceland.

But every backlit gaming keyboard I've ever owned has included some way to turn the lighting off. So don't allow the fear of lights at bedtime alone to put you off a keyboard.
|
The ones that have flashy lights also have an option to turn them off did you ever think about that?
|
If you got the cash and want actual quality, buy Filco.
|
You said want minimalism, have you seen the Filco tenkeyless boards? Mine is definitely a prized possession!
The Keyboard Company might ship to Iceland, as it's based in the UK. http://www.keyboardco.com/index.asp

Have you tried putting it in the dishwasher? (let it dry a good 3 days after) (long shot, but if it is dirt or some shit like that....... ....)
From other manufacturers I can definitely recommend Thermaltake Meka G1. I have it and swap it around sometimes with my 6gv2.
|
Buy das. I have no idea how you would break that keyboard in 6 months, this last me for a year and still running, I'm still using it now after countless slams on the keyboard (rage).

I was thinking it too...I don`t like razer, they have cheap quality. Just my opinion, i already bought a keyboard and a headset from razer and both well...died. After the headset died i always have bought steelseries gear and i'm a pretty happy customer.
Edit: This Filco keyboard sounds very good, take a look at it =)
|
Definitely get a Filco if you are looking for a durable, pro-grade keyboard. Steelseries and Razer stuff are just toys for kids. I've owned products from both and they just break down after awhile, because the quality of materials used is bad.
For quality, get a Filco keyboard and for mouse I guess there are a couple of options. I use Logitech, they have 3 year warranty versus Razers 1 year which alone will speak volumes about the expected lifetime of the product.
|
http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=48
I can't recommend ducky strongly enough. About 4 months with absolutely no problems, and while I don't have experience with other mechanical keyboards I know from when I was shopping that these are highly sought after (and reasonably priced, compared to the quality of most gaming keyboards in that range). You can get whatever switch type you like, and they're pretty flexible in terms of led backlighting, keycaps, etc. if you do decide you want a little more flare. The option for pbt keycaps seems rare and I love the feeling.
|
I think razer is way more decent then what people make them out to be, take for instance the razer maruader, its a domecap keyboard and i have had it for like a year now and its still works 100% perfect. The only problem i have with it is my left index finger hurts because i press the 1 key a lot also, but it still holds up fine.
That's just my 2 cents but honestly i would have dished out the extra money for a das, filco or the steel series 6gv2 only because they seem like they last 10x longer than my maruader and their mechanical!

If you somehow managed to break a 6gv2 I wouldn't even look at a Razer keyboard, they're complete shit. plastic-y, overly flashy, poor quality, gimmicky etc.
I'd look at getting a Filco keyboards, I think they're the best mechanical keyboards on the market at the moment, although a little expensive they'll last three times as long as a Razer keyboard with proper care.

Get a Leopold from elitekeyboards.com
They are about $100 and way better build quality than anything you can get at that price. They also have several different types of switches. I'm currently using a Leopold with Black Switches and have no complaints.

The Razer Blackwidow is black, and all its lights can be turned off (only caps lock, scroll lock, num lock, and gamer mode [disables alt+tab I think]). I have one, and I'm very satisfied with it. The only caveat I have is to get the silent edition if there are other people who are in your house, as the other version is stupidly loud. It's only $70 on Amazon.com.
|
filco or Das, razer build quality is notoriously poor when it comes to keyboards, if you managed to break a 6gv2 (which has a metal backplate), then you should have no trouble destroying the weak plastic shell that is the blackwidow.
You could just buy a single mechanical switch and replace the broken key, but that'd be far too easy.
|
How do people feel about Leopold boards compared to Filco and Rosewill?
I need the numpad and the fullsize Filco boards are really expensive. Leopold boards seem like a good alternative and I can actually get them shipped here. I just haven't heard much about them in terms of quality.
|
The Black Widow comes in a standard edition without the flashy lights. Its the ultimate edition that lights up.

Aren't mechanical keyboards supposed to last 10x longer than a normal keyboard...
I love my lycosa but all the rubber has come off a lot the keys so they are just see through now = /

I've heard Leopold was a reliable brand when I did my research 1.5 years ago. You might still want to check into Rosewill further.

I don't think I've seen a mechanical keyboard thread like this boom for a while lol. Although I think everyone has made their point. The general opinion is Rosewill, Filco, or Leopold. Can't go wrong with any of them. Personally I'd go with Filco, I'm always hearing good reviews about them and their quality keyboards.
