Hey guys. I'm thinking of picking up a 120hz monitor. I currently game on a Dell U2312HM which so far has been adequate, but lately I've been playing CSGO and I think I could use some of the 120hz benefits.

Things to take into consideration:
-I currently have 3 monitors, all 23". I want a good 23" 120hz monitor. It's important to me that all the screens are the same size. If the bezels are different, it's not a huge deal.
-I run win7 x64
-GPU is a GTX 570

My main question is, and this has been asked before but the answer is mixed and I'd like a proper positive answer. If I have 3 monitors, can two of them run at 60hz while the 3rd runs at 120hz? Essentially, I typically have other things running on my side monitors while the middle one is handling a game. I want the game to be able to run at 120hz even if the side screens can't do 60hz. Does anything prevent a system from running those two speeds simultaneously?

My second question is, what are my options? I'm only seeing the S23A700DSL from Samsung, but at least as far as I can tell, there's not that much info about it, and its stand looks like it's really cheap plastic - the lack of height adjustment is really terrible for a monitor of that price.

Any other 23" models or other ideas? Cheers.

I'm running a 120Hz and 60Hz monitor side-by-side, but I'm on Windows 8.
From what I've heard in the past, Win7 may be a bit more finicky when it comes to handling two different refresh rates...but I wanna hear confirmation from current users haha.

You may have no problems at all though, so give it a shot first.

Seems like an expensive "test" if it doesn't work

I actually exchanged some PMs with VulcaN (who is the OP of that thread). He ended up going to Windows 8 lmao, which is probably why I did the same. You may be ok turning off Aero, dunno how much that matters to you though.

Looking at some other threads, people seem to be doing alright though:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1796888 (Dual monitor question)

This is why I say to just try it out regardless. It is a 2012 thread after all, maybe it's not a problem these day who knows :p

Without Aero, I tend to get some tearing in games

Aero is terrible, it creates a variable amount of lag on the mouse and on dragging windows that makes w7 feel terrible compared to running without it.

Worst part is, that lag persists into any program that's not rendering in fullscreen

Well that does nothing for me

Just an observation, Mav mentioned it might/does interact with multi screen or something like that

You shouldn't have any downside or interaction with it from fullscreen? AFAIK

Are you Vsyncing, FPS limiting or just letting your hardware run? (unlimited fps)

Hi!

I am no expert in monitors and I am looking for a decent 22~24 inch monitor with 16.10 ratio.

Could anyone recommend me a decent monitor (not too expensive)

I play mostly dota2 / sc2

Thank you.

Unless you're looking at older monitors, the only things 16:10 at around that size are the 24" options at 1920x1200.

See the OP for a list of those.

Some models missing from that list are the Dell U2413 (replacement for U2410) and Asus PA249Q, which are both more-expensive wide gamut monitors that you don't want.

Others include some newer AH-IPS models I believe. Asus has the relatively cheap VS24AH-P, so some of the competitors probably also offer similar models with that same panel from LG.

I usually try to let it run, then I enable Vsync when I get tearing. It seems to depend on the game.

With Aero off, I get tearing regardless of the game, and regardless of whether Vsync is on.

Running without DWM is giving up ALOT when it comes to hardware acceleration. Windows 8 always keeps DWM running in that regard haha.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/07/23/hardware-accelerating-everything-windows-8-graphics.aspx

I definitely noticed reduced performance on desktop when I disabled Aero (DWM) when I was running just the Catleap 2B. It's a bit silly, IMO, to disable one of the major advancements present in both 7 and 8. + Show Spoiler +
And despite all the anti-Windows 8 nonsense on hardware/tech forums on the Internets, moving to Windows 8 was one of the best moves I have done. Heck, the reason I made the leap was on the advice of a peer, another OCN user

But like I said before, you want to move to a 120Hz/144Hz monitor regardless. If it ends up that Win7 DWM futzes with it, well then you can make a decision from that point forward. But you don't want to have that stop you from moving to this refresh rate in the first place - you won't want go back to 60Hz regardless haha. (#1stworldproblems)

Thanks for your help mav, I really appreciate. Unfortunately though I would much rather not have to buy a new OS and there's no proper "free" version available to my knowledge. X_X

Hey guys, so my cousin just bought a BenQ GW2260 (http://www.benq.com/product/monitor/gw2260/) to be his main screen for his laptop (Asus K55V )
However, the image is too darkish. He can change the Intel GPU Settings on the desktop so it looks brighter, but when he plays a game, those seetings reset, and the "low brightness" persists.
We've tried:

- Change manually the Monitor Settings (Side Panel), no improvements.
- Change NVIDIA Settings, no improvements.
- Change Intel Settings, improvements only on desktop (not gaming).

What can this be?
It's all about the reflections of freedom. Even though he hoped for a better world, with all his strenght, all his will, the most he could do was to make her smile.

What are the actual monitor settings at (via the physical buttons on the device)? Brightness? Contrast? A lot of times, contrast is supposed to be well above the halfway setting. For a standard-gamut monitor, you want it something like roughly as high as it goes where all the color bands on the right side of here (<- click) are still distinguishable.

Make sure some kind of Eco mode, Night mode, or some other such features are not used as well, at least while diagnosing.

You don't want to jack things up in software because you could be clipping out brightness levels, and some games ignore those settings anyway.

Is his room very very bright? If not, and everything is set up properly, pretty much every modern new monitor should be plenty bright enough. If that's really not the case, you could have a defective model.

edit: for a reference on the above, what's the Asus laptop model? Maybe somebody has measured the brightness of that panel, so we have a comparison. What's the brightness level of the monitor compared to the laptop's screen?

Are you running all of your games in windowed fullscreen? o.0

Some of them, which would explain it but in many cases I seemed to get tearing even in non-windowed full screen games like BF3 and other things. Perhaps I am mistaken though...

I use windowed fullscreen for games which are a pain to alt-tab out and remain playable despite the performance drop of playing windowed.

Edit: I picked up the VG248QE. Fingers crossed.

Games are handled differently in windowed fullscreen and pretty badly (added mouse lag etc) with aero themes on, but tearing happens all the time unless you vsync, nothing you can really do about it, you can either pick input lag or faster response at the cost of tearing

Fullscreen, aero theme on or off, the game should run the same, to my understanding

I'll do some more testing when I get it I guess.

I should just have ordered from NCIX and paid the extra $10 for shipping... Can't recommend Memoryexpress, they're slow and not very nice.
