I recently bought a bunch of new computer parts and got the operating system Windows 7 64-bit. I have the Alienware AW2310 monitor which is advertised as being capable of 120 hz refresh rate. However, it will not allow me to change the refresh rate beyond 60Hz in the windows display panel, and when I try to change the refresh rate through my video card control center it only allows up to 75Hz and even then it knocks down the resolution from 1920x1080 to something much less.
I have a Radeon HD 6850 video card, I have installed the most recent drivers from the manufacturer's website, and windows recognizes the monitor as an Alienware AW2310, not a generic PnP monitor. Just in case it's relevant I also have an Intel i5 2500k processor, an MSI P67A-G45 motherboard, 16 gigs of GSKILL ripjaws RAM, and a 1 TB Seagate barracuda hard drive. I'm pretty excited about the new machine and aside from this hiccup everything seems to be coming together.
Is there something I'm missing? How might I go about fixing this? I really want to see the 120hz!
Thanks for your time!

Strange problem, alienware is not known for their reliability though...
What are you planning to run @120fps with that GPU btw?

Have you tried the settings on the ati control panel? the idea is override the monitor settings to get the 120Hz settings. its same as force vertical sync or aspect ration BY THE GRAPHICS card.
Check if ati ahs this option (Nvidia has but dont know ATI).
Also check google for that proble, its possible you need double DVI conection or simple DVI not HDMI or VGA.
Note that 120HZ with high resolution is normally a high transfer rate, so 1 HDMI might not cut it. (1.4 is not able of transfering more than 720p on 120Hz, you need Double DVI for something like full HD 120Hz).

You can only run it on Dual-Link DVI I know for a fact I had this problem for like 12 hours on HDMI and single link DVI
To be honest the monitor should have came with the DL-DVI cable, mine did but I already had the HDMI so I thought I would just use that instead.

The monitor is connected with the dual link DVI cable that it came with, so I guess that can't be it.
Also, I already tried to change refresh rate in the ATI console, and it won't let me do 1920x1080 at anything over 60Hz and when I try to put it at 75Hz it makes the resolution go down. Deeply confusing to me. Any thoughts?

The 6850 only has one DVI-DL socket, try the other you may be in the single DVI which won't allow 120hz.

I'm not sure about CCC, but, in the Nvidia Cpanel, there is an option to create a custom resolution.

flamey, you are my hero. I feel like something of an idiot for not noticing that myself, but I switched it and sure enough the 120 hz option appeared and now my mouse cursor looks buttery smooth.
Thanks so much, problem solved!

I have the same monitor, it's like night and day when you switch to 120 hz! :D

flamey and co. thanks very much. was driving me mad not having the setting available as after i moved house i realized things were a little choppy in game. found the thick DVI lead and away we go at 120hz again.
2017 and i'm still using this AW2310 just fine. i guess an upgrade it probably due soon, but you've just extended this monitors life a bit
