Heatsink clip on motherboard broke off on one side. Is my only option to order a new motherboard? Or is there something else I can do to fix it? The heatsink obviously won't go back on now as is.

There is no heatsink clip on the motherboard. If you are referring to the Intel heatsink than your option is to get a new heatsink.

Er it's a piece on the motherboard, not the heatsink. The little arms off the heatsink that come down and hook onto the motherboard, one broke off on the motherboard.

I think you're talking about a piece of the CPU retention bracket that holds the CPU package in place, not a part of the heatsink. It's probably difficult to comment about or troubleshoot without some pictures.

Depending on how old the thing is, have you tried contacting the seller/manufacturer regarding RMA procedures? Maybe you're lucky. Material failure is a possibility, maybe they're nice enough to let you exchange it.

Oh, sorry, yeah I am, I see it has screws now so I guess the whole thing is replaceable.

Seems like the only way to get them is online...from newegg or amazon, or a couple others. Anyone know if bestbuy or local stores have them? I checked but didnt see them anywhere.

You could just get an aftermarket cooler that has it's own bracket. No need for a new motherboard. You can just screw on the Scythe Mugen for example.

I did say "just" but you might want to consider having a second pair of hands with you since you need to screw it on from the back side of your motherboard while holding the cooler in place on the other side (with the Scythe Mugen atleast).

gotcha. shouldnt be a problem

one last question, I tried calling multiple best buy stores before I go to pick it up to make sure it comes with a mount, but they seem to know less about it than me >_>,

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish™ - Universal CPU Cooler/9462609.p?skuId=9462609&id=1218108988702

does that have a mount?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Thermaltake - Spin-Q Universal CPU Cooler/9423242.p?id=1218102738441&skuId=9423242&st=cpu heatsink&cp=1&lp=3

this one does but it's a circle and I don't see how that one would fit...

-_-

Uhm, that depends on your CPU socket on your motherboard.

If you have an AMD CPU, there is no retention bracket in the aftermarket heatsinks.

Intel CPUs, however, you must switch out the bracket so you can mount the heatsink.

Chad. check out microcenter if you have one in the neighbourhood. The guys out there have better knowledge and also would have a better variety of after market heatsinks. Check if you can get this one anywhere.

Yes, sadly.
It's either that, or buy a new motherboard.

And if you're going with a new retention bracket, note that AM2, AM2+, AM3 are the same, basically.

No problem. Doesn't save you from the waiting to fix your computer, sadly.

I need to resurrect this thread, and possibly get a wee more information.

I have a Dell Poweredge rack-mounted server that has little arms that hold the heatsink down, and the arms are retained by looped clips that fasten to the motherboard. One of them pulled out, and the arm on that side is no longer being held down. I tried pushing the clip back in the holes, but they popped out again. It appears that they penetrate the motherboard, and the ends that are through the other side are bent a bit. and it was either soldered or cemented in place.

Is there a reliable epoxy, super glue, or some other compound that I could use to fix this? I really do not wish to tear down the server to get to the back side of the motherboard. There is very little room to play with, on a 2U server profile. As you can see in the photos, the loop is fastened to the motherboard. The pics tell the story quite well.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah looks like it was soldered. If you have a soldering iron you can probably just resolder it (assuming you have retained the little clip that feel out). Otherwise I'd be more apt to try super glue over epoxy. Makes a stronger hold and less messy than epoxy on a circuit board from my experience.

I had a similar problem and used thermal adhesive to permanently attach the heatsink. Be sure to let it set under some heavy weight to ensure the best contact.
