Hey guys,
Just got an issue here that i want to fix so i can stream smoothly.
So i use xsplit to stream, but when i stream i get a sort of "laggy" feel in-game, like things start to slow down a bit and it feels like im "dragging" my mouse. Its hard to explain and very hard to tell the difference when watching, but when actually playing, it feels kinda choppy. My FPS stays around 45 FPS when streaming so i dont think thats the problem... Feels kind of like an internet issue. Maybe i need to lower my settings or something i dont know, thats why im here so you guys can help me out :D

I defragged and scanned my comp all yesterday so my comp is clean. Here's my specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz
nVidia 9800GT 1gb
4GB Ram
Windows 7 64-bit

My Xsplit settings are:

Quality: 6
Max Bitrate: 500kbps
Buffer: 1000 kbit
Audio: 44.100KHz 16-bit Stereo - Codec:MP3 - Bitrate: 128000
Resolution: 480p (Although when i do 720p, it feels equally choppy)
I stream at 25 FPS.

My upload speed is around 1mb/s
Here's speedtest results:

Hopefully y'all can help me fix this so i can stream smoothly :D

Set xsplit affinity to two cores, and same with sc2. This should give noticable performance. If you wanted to stream 720p with phenom II x4 you would need to be at least clocked @ 4.0Ghz for best performance, 480p is really the only thing your CPU can handle without being overclocked.

Everything else looks good. Maybe put your sound bitrate to 112k

if still not noticable set quality to 5.

ps: use search function next time......

Thanks for your response. To set xsplit and SC2 affinity to two cores, i do it from Task Manager right? I dont plan to stream at 720p, i was just saying . I stick to 480p. Ill try this and get back to you on how it works. I tried using the search function but i could only find people complaining about FPS drops, not a laggy choppy feeling.

EDIT: And do i set Xsplit and SC2 to the same two cores? or Xsplit to Core 0,1 and SC2 to Core 2,3?

Your upload speed is insufficient to stream, 0.93Mb/s only translates to about 116 kilobytes/second, far less than you'd want for streaming.

it's possible that it is your internet speed, its really hard to stream when you have under 1mb/s upload

Yeah it's possible but Boblhead's suggestions actually fixed the problem pretty much, it seems. The "choppyness" is like 95% better and as the game progresses it's almost completely gone. I turned down Quality to 5, set xsplit and starcraft 2 affinities to 2 different cores each. That seemed to have done the trick it seems like it. Thanks guys! and Drewbie i am honored to have you post in my thread. LOL <3

Np, just tinker with your settings you might be able to push out a higher resolution. It doesnt take 1 special setting for everyone.

resolutions, sc2 settings, bitrates, audio codec bitrates, etc. Quality settings. there is a lot you can do.

The best way to fix this is to change your screen resolution to something lower. Such as 1280x720. Yeah it sucks, but it's what you have to do if you don't have much processing power. From what I've read so far, only the new Sandy Bridge CPUs (i5 2500k and upwards) and the older high end i7s are the only CPUs that don't lag your games or give fps drops while streaming. If you have anything less than these you're going to have to put up with it, or lower all the settings you can to minimize it.

You might be able to stream, at most, at the same quality as the OP. Your CPU is a bit weaker.
To set affinity, start the task manager (Ctrl Shift Esc) -> go to the Processes tab -> right click on SC2, Set Affinity, checkbox CPU 0 and CPU 1 , and for your streaming software (XSplit, FMLE, whatever) set it to CPU 2 and CPU 3.
Try the OP settings (with at most medium CPU settings in SC2). If it lags, lower the settings... tinker with it, your mileage may vary...
The answers to most of your Tech Support questions are in the OP. That's why you're not getting a reply. It's been answered before. Read the OP.

Is there a way to save the affinity settings for what CPU cores can run SC2/Xsplit? Everytime i restart my comp i have to re-do it... Gets kinda redundant :S Any way to save the settings?

Ok so, at first, setting the affinites for Xsplit and SC2 to 2 seperate cores was working but now it still reduces the choppiness a bit, but not completely... :S Is there any other suggestions? I even lowered quality down to 5 and but audio down to 112 from 128

Quick question. I have an i7 processor, would putting SC2 on 0,2,4,6 and xsplit on 1,3,5,7 make a big difference? They were set to the same cores, and it was somewhat choppy until I changes some settings around and lowered quality. If I seperated the two, would I be able to up the quality again?

For people asking about ingame lag/sluggish unit control and so on, take a look in this thread:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=246791

Setting affinities may help some, but I don't recommend it. Neither does R1CH in his streaming guide:
Some guides recommend setting affinity so your streaming program and SC2 run on separate CPU cores. I don't really recommend this as it just limits performance, if you want to ensure your SC2 doesn't lag at the expense of your stream, simply set SC2.exe to High Priority in task manager.
Source

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with streaming a 480p stream with a stable 1Mbit/s upload speed. It works fine - stop saying otherwise!

So, i've figured out that the whole "choppy/laggy" feel happens even when xsplit is open and NOT streaming. if i have both xsplit and sc2 on at the same time, the laggy/choppy feeling kicks in. Whether or not im streaming makes no difference at all. I dont think it used to be like this before... can anyone help me figure out how to fix this?

EDIT: just to clear it up a bit, when i dont have xsplit running, starcraft runs at a SMOOTH perfect 60 fps

This issue didn't occur when i first got this processor. When i first switched out my old processor with this one, i could have both xsplit open and playing starcraft and have smooth 60fps. For some reason now whenever i have xsplit open(not even streaming, necessarily), and i play starcraft i get the laggy/choppyness. I just dont get what happened. It used to work perfectly D;. The CPU is not even that old... i got it about a month to a month and a half ago.

nobody knows what could be causing the choppyness? i dont know if id call it choppyness, the mouse feels smooth but the units kinda stutter a little and dont move as smoothly as when xsplit is closed.

Like others said it's your processor. Yes, it's good, but if you want to stream HD without feeling anything simply OC to 4, or 4.2GHz.

why don't you just lower the fps to 20/18? Will still be fast and should take away some choppyness of yours.

Idk if you can stream in 720P with only .93 upload.
When I think of something else, something will go here

Did you guys read my last post though? I stream in 480p... and the laggyness happens when Xsplit is simply open, not even when im streaming. When i start to stream there pretty much is no difference from when im not streaming but still have xsplit open. Xsplit is causing the choppyness not the process of streaming. I dont know how to fix this :S And to Scrubington, the issue is that it didnt used to be like this when i first got my processor.

Having both starcraft and xsplit open on idle (not in game, and not streaming) leaves my CPU at around 50% usage and has temperature of around 60 degrees Celsius average. Closing xsplit, but leaving starcraft 2 on idle, drops my CPU usage down to about 22% and CPU temperature around 58 degrees Celsius. Just some more info so people can help me figure out how i can fix this issue.

EDIT: Heres an example: http://www.twitch.tv/zoohairz/b/292533138

then at the end of that stream i stopped streaming, but it was still choppy. Then i closed xsplit and everything went back to being 100%smooth. Im just confused as hell almost like Xsplit is causing some kind of memory leak or something.

ISSUE HAS BEEN SOLVED.

Thanks to "winGar" who msged me in-game with a solution. Surprisingly, it fixed it. The solution was to completely turn off Windows Aero, by selecting Windows 7 basic in themes. Xsplit turning off aero doesn't actually turn it off fully, apparently, since it still runs in processes. THX DUDE!

I don't want to be pessimistic, but I really don't think it's related to Aero. I have Aero disabled too and still feel the performance drop when starting XSplit up. Each and every one of my friends who have tried streaming has this too. It's been like that for months, and I'll bet it doesn't have anything to do with your CPU, but rather the way the software is written (and the version you ran then/now). However their new GameSource feature helps alot on the problem.

I can't explain your experience, but I'm feeling sure it just diminished the problem, not remove it? Watch your SC2 ingame framerate when start Xsplit. Feel free to comment on this.

SC2 ingame framerate does drop, theres no doubt about it. But there was a kind of choppyness that would occur and make the game feel a bit sluggish even though fps was around 40. Without xsplit i have constant 60fps, with xsplit it drops to about 45 fps. Its still smooth, though. Aero, for some reason, caused the game to become very choppy and sluggish when xsplit opened up. The game runs completely smooth with xsplit open for me now. Even when streaming i get constant 40-ish fps. It's all good now
