SC2 Stuttering on High-End PC

For a while now my SC2 has been stuttering during games. The stutter lasts for 0.5-1 seconds and afterwards the game plays in fast-motion for a small period of time. Some games I may not stutter at all, but in some games I can stutter 10+ times in a short game, I haven't been able to find any particular units or maps that cause the problem.

I am running on a GTX 580, i7 875k and 4GB of RAM, I don't get any similar stuttering on any other games (including maxed Crysis 2 / Witcher 2).

Normally I play with most things on medium/low, but no matter my settings I get the same issue despite having a very high framerate (the in-game FPS counter doesn't drop either when I stutter).

I have ruled out internet issues because other PCs on my network can play SC2 fine, and the problem still existed when playing on a different network. I have also defragged my HDD, reinstalled SC2, 'repaired' SC2 and done a few other things I've read, but the problem still persists.

It'd be great if someone could help me micro in PvPs .

Sounds like potentially RAM issues. Try running memtest86 for a few passes, see if anything comes up. Is your memory manually set up to spec in BIOS, or on auto? Auto settings can be a little wonky from time to time.

My memory, for example, defaults to 1066 7 7 7 18 at 1.7v. It actually runs best at 7 9 7 30 1600Mhz @1.67v. (Those are OCZ's CL7 timings for that kit, no idea why.)

Ok thanks. My RAM is currently set to default, and I'll run memtest when I'm at school tomorrow.

Very unlikely it's a RAM issue. Does it happen mostly during the first time you play? Sounds like it could be stalling while reading data from your HD (+ antivirus scan?), or a driver or other hardware is causing a long interrupt.

Well, this will sound like an excuse, but that was where I was going to head next if the RAM wasn't at fault.

I just tend to end up starting in the wrong place every time, if I start at HDD, it tends to end up being RAM, and vice versa.

I have the exact same problem, i7 950 @4ghz, 6gb RAM, gtx580, have game installed on both a crucial c300 128gb SSD and a seagate 1tb HDD, internet connection gives stable 40ms ping to paris with no packets dropped ever, i also dont use any active virus scanners etc.

can move the mouse during the "freeze", can also issue commands (individually split workers if it happens to freeze as game starts for example), this is also the exact same freeze that happens just before the "waiting for player" screen pops up from battlenet if somebody lags, i think it is server side somehow

Edit: Oh also, it doenst happen at any specific time, seems to be completely random, aside from in the first 2-3 seconds of large games (3v3 4v4) where it consistently happens.

Im on EU server.

Sounds look either CPU or GPU is at the edge of overheating, actually at the point where it clocks down to prevent damage (then after the lag it's fine for some seconds but then the same thing happens again) - especially since it only seems to happen on some (probably warmer) days.
Check them temps. If they're critical, you should clean the inside of the PC/the fans from dust.

If he's describing it well, it doesn't sound consistent enough to be heat. It's always a possibility, but the way he's describing it, it doesn't seem like it.

Seems like those with problems have i7 processors.

Try disabling the "Speedboost" technology, or any tech that will underclock your CPU during times when it doesn't need it. Apparently this can cause micro stutters while the CPU raises and lowers it's clockspeeds.

i had this problem too and it's because the internet, dunno if it's the same.
it was because the respond times were to long and the units had to react 5 sec till they move etc.
maybe that's the same as my problem, check you internet!

It may do, I'll have to play a bit more and see if it happens at the beginning of my ladder sessions. I never let antivirus actively scan while playing SC2, but I do leave MSE running in the background. I guess tomorrow I'll move SC2 to a different HDD to see if it helps (I have 2 Samsung F3 and a Crucial C300 64GB).

My CPU sits around 72c maxed out (prime95) and sc2 doesnt utilise threads 3 through 8 at all, gtx580 wont pass 50c with fans maxed, all the speedstep stuff is disabled. The stutter is not in framerate etc, doesnt affect performance at all, its just the "game time" stops for a second or so, sometimes more, sometimes less. You can actuly micro around etc during the freezes, and all of the commands are processed the moment time starts up again, as i said in previous post it is just like before the "waiting for player" screen pops up, only that screen never pops up and we just get odd time stops pretty frequently... not 100% sure this is the same issue as OP, but from what he said it seems to be.

Im also running from a crucial c300, 128gb, but i get the same issue from my HDD, dont think that is the cause either

If your card is in power saving state then you will experience stutter.

nvidia control panel ->set 3d management - power management mode->prefer maximum performance
There's no S in KT. :P

It is not. I dont get framerate stutter or lag, game time just freezes completely.

May not be related.. but you might want to check what firmware version your running on your C300. The first firmware releases were known to degrade over time. This probably isn't the case if its happening on your other HD.

I had a similar issue with SC2 stutter which came down to the hardware polling in MSI afterburner. When the software would pull info from the GPU (temps, speed, etc.) it would cause some small stutters in game.

Framerate stays at 400-500, i can issue commands to units as normal, its a time freeze, not hardware based stuttering

same as above, though im trying the game with max pre-rendered frames on 0, i doubt it will affect anything

Why? It was on 3 before because i didnt notice the setting, but wouldnt that just introduce massive input lag?

Is your internet usinf wi-fi off a USB nic by any chance? I used to have this exact same problem because I used a USB wi-fi nic. I then plugged an ethernet cord in to replace the USB nic and the problem went away.

3 is normally the default, the only reason to (increase)change it is if your overclocking. If the video card has to render in real time due to advanced timing or a low setting(0) it can cause disconnects, repetitive momentary stalls, crashes etc.

You know, the guy with the supercomputer that lags in game every 5 seconds ? or guy who gets disco hacked every time the action starts flying. While the rest of the time the machine works perfectly. Its always worth mentioning before diagnosing it as ESD = \

Tried that setting on 0, 3 and 6, no noticable difference i found, though i am running at low on this system which brings ~500fps

I had a similar problem and just solved it, but I am so unhappy about my solution and hope some can help me find a better one. What I had to do is disabling the regulation of my cpu speed by the operating system in the bios, thus sacrificing powersaving - I hope there is some other way as I try to be ressourcefull and this is inconvienient just to keep playing sc2 without random frame drops after patch 1.3.3 : /

edit: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 -
yes framedrops startet after 1.3.3, beforehand it was fine :<

Already stopped all power saving... problem is not frame drops, it is game time freezing for no reason... Can split 8 workers, 1 to each mineral patch, while it is frozen, and they all react to commands the instant time resumes, in replay the freeze is not shown, but APM spikes to 10k+ and 1 worker goes to each mineral patch as all 8 commands are received at the exact same time

So did you end up running memtest86 like I suggested before, or skip it and go straight to HDD diagnostics?

Also, check your resource monitor in your task manager, see if the available memory number is right.

I had it and it got fixed the moment I did these things:

Things I've done (other than making sure I have the latest m/b, video and windows updates, which I did):
- switched the audio device to Digital Output ([sound card name]) (this is in SC audio options)
- set "Disable desktop composition" for the starcraft 2 shortcut (in the compatibility section)
- set most video settings to High

I don't know if it was a coincidence, but I haven't seen this lag for a while.
