For my personal preference, it's brown.

Only because I've never tried any other mechanical keyboard switch, just the ones on this tenkeyless Filco.

I think everything else is switch preference for the user. Blues are great for those who love typing; the auditory feedback that the blues give help the typist get into a nice rhythm. It's also great for those who play SC2 and rhythmically spam their hotkeys.

The browns (the ones I chose) have a very light actuation (at only 45g) and don't have the high pitch of the blues. I can still hear the keyboard when I type, but when I have my headphones on I can't hear it at all. It's a nicely balanced keyboard for gaming and typing.

The reds and blacks are linear switches, better used in FPS-type games but a lot of people here at TL.net don't mind using the blacks for SC2 at all. Perhaps they all have iNcontrol type beast hands. But even at 60g, they are still lighter than the traditional rubber dome keyboard.

No opinion on the clears as I haven't done any research on there.

Overall, it's what suits the end user best. For me it's the cherry browns.

Ah, thanks for your opinion sawe, i'll be getting a keyboard sometime soon, i'll probably end up going with blues, but it's cool to see what's favored among the community

No problem!

As far as which cherry blue keyboard with a minimal rating of "decent" quality, you have a lot of options.

Best price:
Razer BlackWidow. Decent quality. Awkward layout that takes more acclimation time. Still used by many. 70 USD, cheaper with promotions. Available from pretty much any online vendor.

Best quality:
Filco or Leopold. Both companies have a reputation of making top-of-the-line boards. No frills, just a keyboard that works and works well. Filcos cost 120USD (PCHome) to 150USD (Amazon/Keyboardco) shipped. Leopolds will be stocked by EliteKeyboards sometime this month, but that date has been constantly pushed back. Estimated to cost 140USD shipped.

Best value:
Rosewill RK-9000. Comparable quality to the Filco board, has a similar controller. 100USD, with promotions dropping the price to as low as 80USD if you're lucky. Out of stock at Newegg and Chiefvalue for now.

When the DasKeyboard promotion comes around, that will be another good option too. Their keyboards are priced around 120USD right now, but the promotion should knock it down to 100USD or so. If you're a student and in the United States, Das gives a discount for that as well as free shipping.

Hope this helps!

Since I'm considering purchasing a mechanical keyboard, I guess I'll ask in this thread.

1. Which key can be spammed faster? I play osu where being able to hit a key over and over again is a useful skill. I assume the browns can be hit faster because of the lower activation force?
2. Is the blue really better for typing? If so, how much better? I don't really mind the noise much. I just worry that the Browns might be too light for me to type as well on. Is this concern valid?
3. What is the approximate activation force for a typical laptop keyboard? I use a lenovo laptop keyboard which I expect has a substantially lower activation force than most standard keyboards. I would like to get an idea of how much force I am using now before I consider mechanical keyboards.

Thanks!

Aren't blues bad for RTS? The double tapping isn't friendly.

It's all personal preference, Boxer uses blues, and I think Jinro may as well and possibly Tester.

1. Of all the keys listed in the poll, the browns would be the fastest. Quickest actuation, less travel, and doesn't have the double tap issue that some blue keyboards do.

2. Once again, it's personal preference. The click of the blues help people get into a rhythm while typing. With 5g of difference between the browns and blues, the difference between the two is mainly in the sound of the key when pressed.

3. Laptop keyboard actuation can be guesstimated by using nickels. Just stack them on top of a key (preferably in the middle of the keyboard) until you can get it to register. I tried it on one of my old XPS laptops that has a scissor switch and it registered at 15 nickels, or around 75g. I pretty much guarantee that a blue or brown switch keyboard will have a actuation point than that of a scissor-switched keyboard.

Hope this helps!

BoxeR was last seen using a Filco with cherry blues; you can tell it's blue from the green LEDs as well as the pitch the keyboard makes when watching BoxeR's Wings. Jinro confirmed he's using a BlackWidow; you can also see it in the GSL VODs.

Tester's using a cherry brown board as speculated by the fine folks at Geekhack. I haven't seen what board he's been using as of late but if he hasn't switched to a SkyDigital board (TSL's sponsors) then I'd assume he still has a cherry brown keyboard.

I use a tenkeyless Filco with browns.
I had an iOne Scorpius M10 before, but the blues annoyed my wife... The build quality was actually really solid, and I loved typing on it just as much as my Filco. If I could have got that same keyboard with browns for the same price, I would have.

The poll is missing topre switches and ALPS switches tho.

Unless you're a purist, programmer, or someone with lots of money to spare, topre switches are generally unnecessary for the common consumer and too expensive for the poll at hand. Not to take away from the fact that from what I've read they are amazing keyboards, the best ones out there.

ALPS switches are also varied, they can vary with linear/nonlinear, clicky/nonclicky just like a cherry MX switch would. But seeing as how the trend has moved away from ALPS and toward cherry keys, I don't think ALPS should be an option for this poll.

Buckling spring keyboards have been around for quite some time, but seeing as how they are comparable to a cherry black actuation force in feel and cherry blues in sound I'm not sure how they would fare in an RTS setting over that of lighter switches. Not saying that they can't be used, but would they be ideal?

Just my opinion.
