My computer has the following states

Intel Core i3 processor i3-540

2048MB DDR3

320gb 3G hard drive

ATI Radeon HP 5450 Graphic card with 512MB VRAM

SuperMulti Drive with LightScribe Techonlogy

Is it considered ok or not?

My computer suggest low for my SC2 graphic =(

Can my computer performance increased solely by buying 5770 HD Radeon Graphic card?

I also experience lag at maps like Metapolosis and Xel Naga Cavarn when I spawn at the top right ? Any solution top that?

Computer expert, help plzzzz

Anyone else feel like Blizzard should have built the engine more optimized for quad cores ?

I hear only 2-3 cores work, and does that also mean my hyper threading quad i7 has a bunch of un-tapped power ? It's lame that a fast i7, and 480 GTX can still run into some slow down due to a poorly built engine. Have you guys tried facility 17? With all settings maxed @ 1920x1080 the side view destroys my FPS... and it shouldn't considering I can max metro 2033 / cyrsis, just fine.

Yeah a 5770 would improve your performance a lot. Also memory prices are quite low right now. You don't neccessarily need 4GB but if you have some other stuff running in the background while playing starcraft 2 that also makes a big difference.

Higher resolution mainly puts more strain on your graphics card.

Upgrading your graphics card is definitely the single best thing you can do, and that would help a lot. I would also upgrade to 4GB of RAM as soon as you can, but that won't make nearly as big a difference as the graphics card. The one you have is super low-end and it's definitely the main thing holding back your SC2 performance.

this should be in technical support forum

but yeah, graphics is your bottleneck - the 5450 is horrible for gaming

i suggest radeon 4850 or gts 250 at the minimum
or next step up: radeon 5750/gts 450
or next step up: gtx 460

read for more info

You will notice a performance increase changing into a ATI Radeon 5770, algo having 4GB RAM instead of 2GB would help.

The one you suggested can mimimumly perform at what level ? (medium ,high or ultra)?

If I change my card to 5770 ,can my SC2 play at Ultra setting effeciently?

Lots of decisions about SC2 don't make sense at all, like the lack of AA.

It really doesn't make sense at all that a CPU-dependant game like SC2 only uses two cores. A blue post promised that they're going to add better multicore support later, but with the current stance Blizzard has in terms of priority, it's probably going to take years.

On that system, your GPU is the bottleneck, but also keep in mind that SC2 is CPU dependent more-so than GPU. My system specs are:

i7-930
2x GTX 460 SC 768MB
8GB DDR3 dual-channel 1600MHz

When running SC2 my framerate on Ultra (with textures set to High) in early game, depending on map (some like Steppes of War's particles are very heavy on the CPU) range from 110 to 130FPS. Checking my GPU usage, they're literally half asleep each the GPUs are barely working at all. CPU usage on the other hand is maxed at 100% on core 1, and about 65% on core two. This makes sense because SC2 has to execution threads, core 1 = main thread (processes input, network, builds the next frame of displayable objects) and core 2 is rendering the "prevoius frame" in the background.

Basically don't expect a GPU upgrade to just increase your framerate by 100% because that i3 will eventually become your bottleneck (my system is relatively well balanced imo) and in the long run, the GPU will eventually be napping while 1 core on your CPU is screaming, and the other half idle.

I play SC2 on an integrated graphics card. It's a tablet for goodness sake! Your card should be fine running on all low settings. I get pretty bad framerate during 200/200 but I get in the 30s mostly.

play on low if it tells you to play on low, it's not like the game looks terrible that way.

also the lag is caused by only having 2 gb ram, once i myself upgraded to 4, it all disappeared.

SC2 is very heavy on the GPU yes. CPU can be a bottleneck, but that's if you have a pretty bad one.

Multi-core programming is just not that easy I am afraid. There aren't even that many tools that help you out with it. It is awesome for applications that are very parallel by nature like video processing, encoding, etc where many things can happen at the same time and don't need to wait for each other or depend on each other's results to move on. Games don't work that way very much.

This is why if you're buying a PC solely for gaming, things like hyperthreading and Quad core TODAY won't do much for you. Your game simply won't utilize that stuff. What it does give you though is the ability to run other stuff while your game is running without killing it too much.

Things that DO matter for gaming though are:

RAM, the more the better
GPU card - go for a very fast single card over a mediocre set of cards in SLI
Fast hard drive - 10K RPM or SSD

You'll get faster game performance if you say go with an i5 vs an i7 and use the money difference to upgrade one of these things instead.

There's a pretty good thread about stuff like this here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=137554
But from what it looks like your graphics card is the problem, and you'll probably want more ram. Sorry I can't help more.

1.The games tells you to play on low, or it's your only option ?
2.How many frames do you have when you play on low (ctr+alt+f) ?

I have the HD 5770 you mentioned, and I play SC2 on ultra and can stream in HD quality. Really good card. Maybe upgrade to 4GB of RAM as well? Your processor isn't really I big deal, I'm running on i3 as well. All in all to play on higher settings you'll need at least 1GB of VRAM and probably the 4GB of RAM too.

You should look into overclocking your cpu. Overclocking can give you a significant performance boost for little to no money.

Other than overclocking, if you're looking to be cost efficient you'll probably be better off investing in a new machine.

Also adding more ram isn't going to increase your performance. While I was troubleshooting a defective ram issue I compared playing with 2GB vs 4GB of RAM. Unless you have a bunch of programs taking up resources in the background, more RAM isn't going to help.

The game says one, however when set everything to low, it start to lag a bit

2. what you means?

the main reason the you get bad performance as of now is the graphics card. the 54XX series is mainly for HTPCs and not gaming. the Radeon HD5770 is probably the best way to go and is highly recommended, but it is just out of range price wise, you should go with the 5750, which is what i did.

with a better gfx card you will be able to play on at least medium with your current pc setup at full hd res... (see below for other thoughts)

**not actually 100% sure on performance upgrade with your system, just an estimation as i have a Phenom X4 with 8 gbs of ram so there wasn't much for me to upgrade but my gfx card.**

Dunno if it's been said, but Sc2 is very CPU-dependent. Getting an after-market cooler and OCing is your best bet.

Also keep in mind that upgrading your graphics card is dependent on your psu. You have to make sure it can supply enough power to the new gpu. Other than that yes this game is very cpu dependent but an i3 shouldn't be too limiting as sc2 can only run on 2 cores anyway if I'm not mistaken. And as previously stated that ram should be fine if your not running background programs. Honestly tho a 5770 may be overkill if you just want to play smoothly on lower settings.

Edit: if you dont mind a little related thread hijack, I'm looking to get a new system soon and am curious what other people are running. I'm not looking for anything fancy, but if you are able to run super smooth on medium settings I would appreciate a spec summary for comparison to determine what I should get as far as an affordable system. Either way thanks. You could pm me if the hijack is not kosher.

Honestly, going up to 4 gigs of ram will give you a good boost with a decent card. SC2 doesn't need a crazy good card just a good cpu so there's no point in cranking your card up really high if your cpu will just bottleneck.

SC2 can use a full 2gigs of ram effectively by itself and windows 7 will easily eat 500-700mb, xp's similar and vista is even worse. So a ram upgrade will stop all the jitters you're seeing, especially early on and late game when zerg morphs a bunch of stuff in etc.

Don't worry about overclocking, i3's were never made with overclocking in mind.

i3 540 is very fast... i3's are not low tier at all, it's an excellent processor for SC2.

Radeon 5450 is very slow. A 5770 would be a huge improvement. I have a 5770 myself and love it, it's a great card.

More RAM would be nice, but not nearly as important as a video card upgrade.
