The rails are just different groupings of overcurrent protection trip points. There's a device monitoring all the current for each "rail" and sees if it goes above a certain amount. Usually if a rail is advertised at like 25A, the actual trip point will be significantly higher, like 33A or more (so there's no accidental tripping, making the power supply shut itself off, which would be inconvenient). On the other hand, this means that if there's a short and the power supply actually should be shutting itself off to protect something, it sometimes doesn't because the trip points are too high.

As mentioned above, all the +12V power no matter which rail is handled by all the same hardware, except in a few rare circumstances like for the Corsair HX1000 and a few other units. Just look at the total +12V rating. If there's no total +12V rating specified on a multi-rail power supply, it's a POS unit you shouldn't be using that has something to hide or is just making the numbers up anyway.

Ah. Thank you to all three of y'all, clears stuff up. Y'all seem to know everything.

Continuously, made sense, I was just either confused or not reading properly into the other PSU's. It completely makes sense that continuous would be better (or what I want at least), just for some reason I don't remember it being mentioned in most of the supplies. I probably wasn't reading clearly enough though XD.

What is your budget?
<&600

What is your resolution?
Probably 1920 x 1080. I have yet to buy a monitor, so if someone can suggest me one around the price of $100 dollars, that would be great. (This is not part of the original budget.)

What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming for games like Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2. I'm not looking to running the games on Ultra or maxed graphics, but at least medium graphics for both. I will be using the desktop most likely for watching movies on HD if possible.

What is your upgrade cycle?
I will use what I build from the start for 3 years or so. Afterwards, I will most likely build another better gaming pc in the future.

When do you plan on building it?
Later this month.

Do you plan on overclocking?
Unlikely. I will use what I build since I don't even know how to overclock.

Do you need an Operating System?
Yes, I will need an operating system.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Unlikely.

Where are you buying your parts from?
Sites in USA are fine like Newegg or other sites that ship to USA for cheap.

$526, can run both Starcraft II and Diablo 3 on ultra at 1080p. Now you have $200 for monitor, buy a Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM (not on sale currently but goes on sale often for around ~$200): http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&sku=320-2807 , you can also get the U2212HM which is on sale right now.

Power consumption aside, a GTX 460 running at 876 MHz (up from nominal 675 MHz, so a 30% OC) should be comparable to a HD 6870 or maybe even better, and the price is just $150. It's an EVGA model too, for what that's worth--cheapest 6850/6870 alternatives won't have the same kind of warranty support.

Also the version 2 GTX 460, better BIOS and voltage type stuff, a lot of them can actually hit 900+Mhz on air.

And EVGA support is so awesome, I literally have it programmed in my cell, and call them for any issue I can't sort normally, even if it isn't really related to one of their products.

I am also thinking of getting a secondary monitor. My current is a 24 in hd at 1920:1080. Will picking up another monitor (around a 20in) put any noticeable extra strain on my PSU or my GPU/CPU? Especially while gaming or streaming.

I have a gtx 260, phenom x4, 500w gold cert PSU

Perhaps a dumb question, but I have never ran with dual monitors so figured I would ask before sinking any money into it.

Thanks again!

Monitors don't pull power from the power supply.. they plug directly into the wall -.-' and a second monitor isn't a big deal.

Im going to get a i5 2500k, but I have a question
Is the i5 2550k better? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115230
Or is the i5 2500k better http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

Finally, I've decided to build a new computer.

What is your budget?

I'm not set on this, but I'm going to go for the most 'bang for the buck' that satisfy my requirements unless it becomes too expensive, which is unlikely. I'll go as high as ~$1200 for now for the rig alone.

What is your resolution?

I currently have a 1600x900 monitor, and I will look to buy a second monitor to use as a primary one. Later on I'll upgrade the current monitor I have probably.

What are you using it for?

I'll be gaming and streaming, and I want to be able to stream at high if not the quality I see it. My upload can probably handle it. I suppose I might encode videos, but unlikely going to really do anything intensive beyond gaming/streaming until I upgrade.

What is your upgrade cycle?

I'll say 2 years for now. I would basically want to snag up on deals as time goes on and upgrade continually.

When do you plan on building it?

I would like to buy my parts soon, say within two weeks. I've heard something is coming out soon (yeah real specific!) so if there are any drastic price changes, I'll wait.

Do you plan on overclocking?

This I am not so sure. I am quite computer-noob. I need advice here.

Do you need an Operating System?

I would need one but I have access to discounted ones through university or acquire it otherwise.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

I don't think this will be needed.

Where are you buying your parts from?

I do have a Fry's nearby that I can access nearly all the time; Microcenter is a bit far but I suppose I can go there once if I wanted any deals.

Other notes:

Games I'll be playing: BW, SCII, LoL, Dota2, and possibly GW2 + other games, which I haven't touched for some time. If there are interesting titles that come out, I'll be willing to play them, so I would like for those games to be able to run at least in medium setting, preferably high/highest + possibly stream them as well.

I want a SSD to boot OS from and to have games that I play the most on it. Then probably 1-3 traditional HD to cover my storage needs. I do like to store data a LOT so I'll want a healthy amount, let's say 5 TB for safety. Using them in RAID configuration increases speed right? So I'll be getting 2-3 internal HD. I currently have a 2TB Seagate external. However I heard that sata speed > usb speed so is there a way to make one of the HD external while still using sata so I can quickly transfer large amount of data if needed?

As stated earlier, a monitor, and possibly two if I get a good deal. Not sure how big I want it though, although I suppose it may be time to move on from 17 and 19 inch monitors? (I still have a 22inch CRT in storage far away though, lol).

Currently I have a Antec900 with following parts: e6750@2.66, 2x1gb ddr2 800, 8800GTS. I found the case to be a bit clunky to carry around though. I wouldn't mind using the same case, but if possible, use a smaller case. And if there are good ways to carry the desktop around (like a specialized bag with cushions that fits desktop + peripheries perhaps) that isn't exorbitantly priced I'll get one.

I do want a pair of speakers, if anyone has a good recommendation for a bang-for-buck ones please do so.

I also keep a ridiculous amount of tabs (20-60) open while browsing internet, which is a habit I'm going to fix eventually, but probably going to continue on for a while.

I want to keep using my keyboard that uses a ps2 connector (dt-35). There is a ps2->USB adaptor right? Or will I have to ditch this =[

I have limited experience assembling computers, basically watched someone assemble my old computer somewhat. But I should have help. I'll update on this for a later. Worst situation I'll ask friend of a friend for dinner or something.

Thanks for all the help, it's very appreciated.

I don't know why you would want to go from PS/2 to USB for a keyboard when PS/2 is better than USB in every way. The only conceivable reason would be that you have media and macro keys or backlighting or something like that.

Even modern boards still hold onto the PS/2 standard so it should be fine.

As for the rest of the build, we really would like to know if you are willing to OC. Honestly overclocking is very easy this generation and not scary at all as long as you are careful and follow directions very well. And for the truly paranoid there is intel insurance for like $20 that totally covers you.

Oh I thought ps/2 was getting 'old'. I just wanted to continue using my keyboard.

If it's easy and manageable, I'll do it. As long as it's doable following instructions and poses minimal risks on the process itself and afterwards it shouldn't be a problem.

I went over the budget given that you need multiple HDDs >.> but I listed a cheaper / worse alternative for HDDs if you want to stay within budget. The alternative is you can get an eSATA / USB3 external instead of using internal HDDs.

This is an overclockable configuration for $1298 before taxes and other applicable fees.

I put emphasis on how hot those deals are so I'd suggest you jump on them right away if you are building soon before you miss out.

You can get the Intel 520 for $170: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167093 if you miss out on the Samsung 830.

The case has a handle and is rather small compared to some others so I guess this is what you're looking for? You can of course shop around for smaller / more mobile cases yourself on Newegg.

Hi guys about to pull the trigger on this one, would love any feedback particularly about picking a motherboard:

CPU:
http://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX80623I52500K-Core-i5-2500K-Processor/dp/B004EBUXHQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2KAXXUB81YZ60&colid=1LM5AJKVCXVPN

Video Card
GTX 680(if I can get one ^_^)

Motherboard:

OR

PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182132

SSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167086

Also, I plan on overclocking so if you guys can recommend any heatsinks that would be awesome

Again, feedback is greatly appreciated

You can get the 2500k for $200 with free shipping: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57962&promoid=1361

Coolermaster Hyper 212+ is $23 if you want an inexpensive but good heatsink: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=41337&promoid=1361 If you want something better than the Thermalright HR-02 Macho is available from Amazon at a decent price I think and than there's always the flagship heatsinks such as the Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Thermalright Silver Arrow, and Noctua NH-D14 for around $90.

Though keep in mind, these larger heatsinks do not have clearance for the ridiculously tall Vengeance heatspreaders, I suggest you just grab low-profile memory such as this mushkin kit for $40: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226191

You don't want to do SLI with a mATX board. And the P8Z68-V Pro is essentially the same board plus two SATA ports over a P8Z68-V so I'd suggest that instead for $160 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B005UDITT6/ , $180 from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131792

Rosewill Hive is okay but the Capstone is way better (minus modular cabling), the 550w variant (which provides the same amount of power as the Hive 650 fyi) is available for $64 with promo code: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182068 Though I would get the 650w variant since you will be doing SLI with GTX 680s, available for $80 with promo code: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182071

I don't plan on doing SLI. It looked like the choices for getting a PCIe 3.0 board with a 1155 socket were a bit limited but that one from amazon looks great. I didn't even realize that one of the boards I linked was mATX.

Also I didn't even realize this but there's also an i5-2550k cpu that I didn't see. Is it worth it to get that instead of an i5-2500k or are they the same chip just factory clocked differently?

I hope you know that PCIe 3.0 boards are useless without Ivybridge.

If you're not doing SLI than you can get the Capstone 550 for $64. I'd suggest a less expensive board as well unless you're a big fan of ASUS than I guess it's okay to stick with the P8Z68-V.

2550k is just a 2500k with the IGP disabled and is clocked higher as you said.

Oh, I thought that the gtx 680 needed PCIe 3.0, or would be bottlenecked by not having it. Dumb assumption I guess. In that case I suppose there are a whole range of motherboard options that open up. Thanks for the help!

PCI-E 3.0 vs 2.0 bandwidth has already been examined by Anand: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5458 GTX 680 is similar to the 7970 and doesn't even saturate 2.0.

Ivybridge is required for PCI-E 3.0. Sandybridge is only capable of 2.0 regardless of what board you have.
