On January 24 2012 20:19 discw wrote:+ Show Spoiler + Hey all, I'm looking to upgrade my computer with stuff that should last a decent amount of time, budget is around 500. I already have a good monitor, gpu, keyboard, case, PSU, and mouse. It's mainly for gaming, (SC2, SWTOR, Mass Effect 3) and I do want to finally get into overclocking(I've never done it). Not much plan on streaming, unless there's a growing audience for platinum zergs. Here's what I'm looking at: CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 cpu fan: COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 MB: ASRock Z68 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271 Memory: Patriot Signature 8GB from the CPU/memory bundle mentioned above http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.805911 HD: Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 7200.12 1TB SATA http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58746&vpn=ST31000524AS&manufacture=Seagate Does that seem like a good deal for my budget, and am I missing anything? It's been years since I bought this stuff so I'm grateful for any advice. I see cheaper HD's but they're 16mb cache(like this), is that a bad idea? Get Asrock P67 Pro3 instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230 (unless of course you plan on doing SLI or CrossfireX in the future than you can stick with the Asrock Z68 Extreme3). Cache size on HDDs don't matter and you're comparing 500gb to 1TB fyi. Bigger capacity HDDs will have more cache. If you care about disk performance than buy a SSD.

Specs: Windows 7 64 bit AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor @ 3.0GHz 4x 2GB DDR3, Samsung? (if I'm using CPU-Z correctly) ATI Raedon HD 5450 300 Watt power supply I have a 1920x1080 monitor but I kinda hate it and would not mind using a different one if it can increase preformance. I'm assuming my graphics card is the biggest issue in this computer, but I'm definitely not the most knowledgeable in the subject. If someone could give me a suggestion on how to best maximize this computer it would be awesome. I guess a reasonable price range would be 200-400$ish, but I'm hoping I can just update the graphics card and maybe the power supply to be able to do what I want this computer to do.

High end gaming, looking to play on maxed on the following three games: GW2, SWTOR, WoW. May transition over to some games such as sc2 and bf3. When do you plan on building it? ASAP, some time around mid february What is your resolution? 1920x1080 Do you plan on overclocking? No. Do you need an operating system? Yes Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI for Crossfire? If the budget suffices and the needs are necessary then yes. Where are you buying your parts from? UK, overclockers.co.uk seems like a good place. Maybe scan.co.uk Maybe ebuyer.com Also need a builder, have a current builder that will charge £50 - £75. If can get cheaper. Have a look at this as a guideline. http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/p/42ge I think you could make it all one order (see "View prices by merchant"). I'll leave it up to you to research all your possible vendors for combo's and better deals on similar components. Also there's some wiggle room in there. You could upgrade mobo, get a different case, go up to an i5 2500 just because you can, etc. If you want to get the price down, I'd probably just go down to a HD 6870 from the 560ti as the difference in performance is quite small and can save you 20-30 pounds. Other savings could be ~15-20 on the HDD if you go down to 500GB, and maybe ~10 on mobo by getting the most bare-bones mobo. I'd try to stick with the i5 2400 if possible over an i5 2300 or even an i3 2120.

What mobo do you have? You could just get some aftermarket cooling and try overclocking that Phenom a little, maybe ~500-600 MHz. You should be able to have a decent 480p stream as long as your upload speed is fine. Streaming depends entirely on the CPU. You need a new PSU and GPU for sure though if you want to play new games above low settings (or at all, a 5450 can hardly deliver playable frame rates at 1080p) Good price on an Antec EarthWatts 500D PSU in Canada right now: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=47698&vpn=EA500D-Green&manufacture=Antec&promoid=1130 And for GPU, you'll probably want a HD 6870/GTX 560 or a HD 6950/GTX560 ti. Edit: With current prices, I'd get: HD 6870: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=58226&vpn=GV-R687OC-1GD&manufacture=Gigabyte&promoid=1130 GTX 560: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=61236&vpn=GV-N56GOC-1GI&manufacture=Gigabyte Or if you want more power: 560ti: http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11830BD9294&vpn=GV-N560OC-1GI&manfuacture=GIGABYTE 6950: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=64182&vpn=R6950 Twin Frozr III 1G/OC&manufacture=MSI/MicroStar

I've always heard the joking "you can just use a cardboard box." So I guess the question is: can I really use the cardboard box? Mostly, I don't want to place the motherboard on something that could potentially damage it while its active and running. I'm not (quite) foolish enough to place it on something conductive (metal), but the three main options are: painted wooden shelf, a corner of a finished wooden desk, a cardboard box (open, of course, so the intel stock heatsink can get some air, possibly just a slab of cardboard). Power supply sitting next to the mobo, of course. Thanks in advance for the replies (I won't be able to read & respond until late tonight).

Not sure if anyone remembers the build I made on December 31st... Well the idiots there have it indicated that everything I purchased was in stock. 7-8~ days later my order still hasn't been shipped, so I see what's up. Next day it is 2500k + P67A C43 bundle for $315 is on back-order. I email them, they keep assuring me it'll be coming the next day for over the last week. Today again I got a message that the ETA is today, although if you don't want to wait you can get a 2500k + whichever motherboard for current pricing. Shittiest service on the face of the planet, how dare they charge my card for the order and not ship it for another 3 weeks? Now I don't even know if I want to cancel the order, or wait, and getting a new mobo w/ P67 would cost at least $45 more with their current pricing. Never using NCIX again, terrible experience.

"Normally, I would have no problem to help you make the change, however that board is currently out of stock in our production facility, it appears across our inventory, there's only one of those boards, and it's in our Eastern Facility. The transfer itself would take 5-7 business days. Is there any other board which would work for you? I have no problem to add the RAM, and the external hard drive, however all the changes will be made as soon as the board is picked out and ready to go. Thanks." Not sure what I can really ask for, their other P67 boards seem to be pretty expensive. I'm so needy, I'm sorry. The old Mobo I'm trying to replace is $118 btw.
