To me a burner would only let you burn/copy things whilst a driver lets you watch movies/read disks. Is that correct? I just don't want to find out that one of them does both after I buy one. A burner can access the media, as well as record to blank media. A drive can only access the media. In this case, access means read/watch/listen/explore, media means "the little shiney thing you put inside" and record means put stuff on the shiney thing from your computer. So I want a burner because it does both functions: reads and writes. Easy enough. Thank you. Why are people BMing all of the sudden? gah... frustrating.

Probably because you're the one initiating rudeness by asking people to answer the same questions a dozen times in a row (intentional exaggeration). That has a tendency to make people get a little short, particularly when the answer is the sort of thing the average 8 year old knows.
Seriously though, in your case, I'm starting to think a prebuilt PC is a good idea.

Just because I've never had any reason to know what the difference between a blu ray burner and driver does not mean i'm an incompetent ass. And people responding with snide/arrogant responses instead of simple answers is not making it easier on anyone. Like I posted before, I'm here because I need help. And I've learned quite a lot the past couple days, although I'm sorry if I seem to repeat questions. That means I didn't understand it the first time around.

Oh, no, snide and arrogant this isn't. This is genuine concern. Snide and arrogant out of me is nasty, and not subtle. You get an answer aimed at the level of tech knowledge inherent in the question, that's all.
If you ask something that gives the impression of knowing next to nothing, or not being capable of comprehending the answers you got, the repeat answer gets dumbed down. That's just common sense.

Alright fine, so the question wasn't as advanced as could be. It was just something I didn't know. Learn something new everyday... right?

Will a 5900RPM HDD run noticably slower than a 7200RPM HDD?

What is your resolution? 1920x1080
What are you using it for? Gaming
What is your upgrade cycle? 2+ years
When do you plan on building it? Within a week
Do you plan on overclocking? Yes
Do you need an Operating System? Yes
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No
Where are you buying your parts from? NewEgg Basically, I want a gaming computer that will run games like SC2 and Battlefield 3 on high settings. This is what I came up with on my own based on all the research and feedback I got. I feel pretty comfortable with this, but I bet it's not ideal. + Show Spoiler [List I came up with] +I think the motherboard and PSU are slightly overkill. I chose those components mostly because I've seen each of them repeatedly recommended regardless of what website, forum, or chart I looked at. Knowing they're so popular makes me more comfortable in choosing them, even if it is slightly more than what the bare minimum of what I need would cost me. If neither is truly worth it I will probably go down to the ASRock P67 Pro3 and a decent 500W PSU. Also, I know cases are much less important than the actual internal components, but does anyone have any input on a case? I like cases that have a window and LED fans, and I've been looking at the CM Storm Scout, CM HAF 922, and Antec 902 V3. I put the 902 V3 in that list because it's the most expensive, but I might go with another case. Suggestions are welcome. Just a little bump, lol.
I should probably also pick another set of memory since the one I picked I picked because of promotions I had from NewEgg that would've dropped the price a lot, which are now over. T_T

@ LazyMacro I'm no comp guru (finding parts for my own at the moment) but I just felt like I should point this out: a 1.5TB HDD by Seagate and the same Asus 24x DVD burner combo for $80. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.696143 I had the same HDD and DVD burner as you picked out, and I'm trying to debate right now which is better. The Samsung HDD has 7200RPM and the Seagate has 5900RPM (that's what my question above your post was about actually).

Get this RAM now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231424
As pointed out, the mobo is pricey, you could cut back to a cheaper one (Asrock P67 Pro3 for about $110) and probably not lose anything you would miss. You can save $5 or so by getting a DVD burner with free shipping, they're all pretty much the same anyway.
A 5900 rpm drive, and almost every "green" drive is a slower drive and meant for storage. This is ok to use if you have a SSD/faster HDD for the OS/programs, but booting off one of these will be slower. I would suggest a faster HDD/SSD over the large storage drive for everything but data (music files, movies, whatever).
edit: personally, I wouldn't get a seagate, but you'll find people who are loyal to certain makers of HDDs. Samsung and WD are my preferences.

Oh thanks, I didn't know that. I'll go with the Samsung for sure then.

PSU is fine, I'd guess you have something plugged in incorrectly. Check your motherboards manual to make sure you have all the cables in the right places, check that they're in firm.
You did install motherboard standoffs, yes?

Im looking but I dont see whats wrong. if by standoffs you mean those little screw looking thing the motherbord rests on then yes i did...if not then maybe. TT

Uhm... next time hit the quote button. Easier to read. And yes, those were in fact what I meant by motherboard standoffs. Next question: did you only install the standoffs under corresponding holes in the motherboard?
|
sorry yep the case had more holes but i only put them in the holes where I could screw it in the motherboard the rest i left out

Just a thought I had: Wouldn't it be cool if TL had a sample build list based on what people might want in a build? Every other technology/computer/gaming forum/community has some kind of guide. Just throwing it out there.

It would be even cooler if people read the recent pages of this thread, which cover just about everything most people should be interested in, at any given time.
The OP also covers some of that stuff, although it might be slightly out of date.
a1 had made a guide as well. I'm sure it's still out there.
