No, my 775 socket mobo's pci e slot broke after I took out my video card wrong, so I have to use the x4 instead of x16 slot now. I'm in the market for a new mobo, and don't really want to spend $60-$70 on an outdated 775 mobo so im thinking of getting a newer mobo and cpu as cheap as possible to get the best possible performance per dollar, and i think the phenoms are very good in terms of performance/cost.

Many would disagree with you. An Intel Core i3 2100 is arguably better than the Phenom II X4 in many tasks.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i3-2120-2100.html

You would also be on socket LGA1155 which is going to be retained for Ivybridge so it's expected with a BIOS update for current boards, you'll have an upgrade path. Where as with a Phenom II X4, you're on a dead AM3 socket as it's getting replaced by AM3+.

Phenom basically gets wrecked right now. Are you planning to stream or anything else that benefits from having 4 cores? If not, i3 2100 and H61/H67 will hit a similar price range and destroy the 965 in terms of gaming performance.

For streaming, an i5 2400 will cost a little bit more, but it also wrecks the 965.

And ninja'd. Par for the course.

wow.. i guess i was suckered in for a quad core 3.4 ghz as opposed to a dual core 3.1 ghz. The dual core really is faster? :o I see in the article you linked that they have a new dual core design, i guess i just dont know how to interpret that.

also, I would like to stream, would the dual core not be enough for that?

EDIT: atm i have an e8500 which is also dual core, 3.1 ghz but i guess doesn't have the same architecture.

what would be more worth it?

getting a replacement 60-70 dollar motherboard

or

getting a new motherboard and cpu for 170+ (would it be significantly faster?)

You would want a quad core to stream, in which case you would step up to the core i5 2300 or core i5 2400 for roughly $60 more. You definitely do not want to be purchasing an AMD Phenom II right now unless it is discounted.

Get a replacement board or purchase a core i5 2400 along with a H61 / H67 motherboard. You probably also need new DDR3 memory or you might already have that if you are on the P45 platform.

Okay.

So in terms of replacement boards for LGA 775 (I believe my current mobo is ddr2 which means i would have to replace ram?) I'm looking at:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138185

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130305

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128357

Is there anything wrong with micro atx? I'm kind of lost as in terms of what to look for in terms of motherboards. I am most likely never going to crossfire, would like decent overclocking, and other than that I don't know what else is to a mobo.

Asides from less connectivity and less power phases, there's nothing wrong with a mATX board. P45 usually are DDR3 but there are a few that are DDR2 as well and some even have both slots (but only one type can be used at a time).

You would want a DDR2 board in order to re-use your old memory. It's not a bad idea to get DDR3 memory either if you plan on upgrading within the next year or two since DDR3 will remain the standard for most likely another three or four years.

yeah im ok with getting new ram, i think im going to get a lot like 16 gb so that my computer is really fast (i kid i kid <3), will i notice a difference transitioning from 4gig ddr2 to 4gig(possibly 6-8gig depending on prices) ddr3?

The transition from DDR2 to DDR3 won't be a night and day difference for gaming. Only the X58 chipset supports triple channel memory so you would want a dual channel kit (2x2GB, 2x4GB, 4x4GB, etc) for a P45 and basically any chipset that isn't X58. Unless you want to run a 2x2GB, 1x2GB configuration for 6GB or have the three modules run in single channel.

8GB can be had for as low as $55.

That's a G41 board with 3 phase power. I don't think you're going to get much if any overclocking done out of that =\

btw as with most lower-end motherboards, don't expect much in the way of overclocking. That looks like a seriously anemic voltage regulation section.

If you want to stream reasonably, you'll need to upgrade to a quad core.

edit: late -_-;;

Hey everyone, I'm looking to build my own computer for the first time. Since my knowledge of hardware is very sketchy, I thought I'd ask some more knowledgeable people before trying to figure it out on my own, leading me to actually register for an account after having browsed the forums for a while. I would greatly appreciate it if someone didn't mind suggesting a build for me (any help at all would be awesome).

My budget would be around $700-800, though if someone could do it in less (is $500-600 rather unrealistic?) that would be awesome. I already have an OS and monitors. Details listed in order of priority (ie., first wanting to be able to multi-task without worries, then graphics quality, then HD specs)

What I'd be using it for - a little bit of everything. Some gaming and movie-watching, also a bit of video and picture editing. I do a lot of streaming, and I multi-task a lot, so I'll have a lot of programs/tabs open at the same time (Chrome, Open Office, Skype, VLC/iTunes, Picasa, etc.)

I would like a GPU from NVIDIA (I want NVIDA specifically for CUDA programming, and would also like to have the option of adding in a second GPU later on for the same purpose) for a dual monitor setup, both at 1920x1080.

I'd like to have a system SSD (~60 GB) with two secondary HDDs (one for an Ubuntu dual-boot).

I probably won't upgrade again for 3-4 years, unless a diamond the size of my head falls out of the sky or something. I hope to order parts in the next few days, to take advantage of 7/4 sales if possible, unless there's some planned released for something cool and exciting by early September. I would like to be able to get everything together at Newegg or Tiger.

I will not be overclocking, but it would be nice to have a silent computer. An aluminum case (which would be lighter than steel?) is preferred, but it doesn't really matter.

Thanks in advance! :D

You're asking a lot of an $800 system. Especially wanting an SSD and a Silent case. Do you at least already have the monitors you want to use?

Also, a consumer CUDA GPU isn't going to be cheap. skyR can probably get you close, but you're realistically going to have to shave your priorities.

Best guess, you'll probably need to add in the SSD later, and possibly one of the storage drives, or give up on silent and get both storage drives.

Rough guess, though, i5 2400+H67 combo, 8GB of DDR3 1333, and a GTX 570, with a spinpoint F1 or Caviar Blue, cheapo optical, and a fractal design define R3 case.

Alright - I do already have the monitors, and I can live with noise. I can drop the CUDA requirement as well, so I don't need a very high-end GPU (whatever would be sufficient for movie watching, casual gaming, streaming, etc.), and I probably won't need a second one either. (Just out of curiosity, if I lifted the budget, about how much would it take for my original plan?)

Thanks for the quick reply!

Well, without putting together a full build (I'm terrible at it) I'd guesstimate about $1100 to do everything you want, depending on sales. If you drop the CUDA capability, SLI requirement, and the silent case, you can easily get the rest of it at or below $800. Think there's some builds in the price range in the last handful of pages.

This is what you would be looking at if you wanted to go over budget slightly, for $890 (with one HDD, you can add a second one of whatever capacity and speed you want):

Intel Core i5 2400 @ $180
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074

Gigabyte GTX 560 @ $190 ($170 after mail in rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125383

Gigabyte Z68 D3 @ $120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128501
+ Show Spoiler +
I don't think SLI is necessary for CUDA? You just need the extra graphics card correct? If that's the case, you can get just get any motherboard with two PCI-E x16 slots and SATA3 (for your SSD).

GSkill Ripjaws 2x4GB 1333MHz @ $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311

XFX Core Edition 450 @ $55 ($45 after mail in rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB @ $40
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136769

Fractal Design Define R3 @ $110
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352001

DVD Burner @ $20
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204

Crucial M4 64GB @ $120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148441

If you wanted to stay within your budget but still meet all your needs, you could get a Corsair CX430 V2 for $45 ($25 after mail in rebate) instead of the XFX and a GTX 460 instead of the GTX 560, both these changes would take roughly $40 off the overall total.

You can obviously get a less expensive case if you don't need a silent case.

Oh does the 560 do CUDA? I thought it was minimum 570. My bad. This is why I don't try to do the builds.

Apparently it is. I have no idea why I was trying to think some of them didn't allow it. I blame tramadol.
